Sermon Title - The ; Poor in Spirit Sermon Text - Matthew 5:1-3 Speaker - Pastor Doug Sermon Outline All are Spiritually Bankrupt - Matthew 5:3; Luke 15:17-19 Living in this Spiritual Understanding - Matthew 5:3; Luke 15:20-24 Study Questions

Matthew 5:1-3 When he saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

The word poor means beggarly poor or worthless. With that understanding, what does spiritually poor look like to you? What prevents us from coming to God in this way? This passage teaches that spiritual beggars will possess the kingdom of Heaven. How does recognizing ourselves as spiritual beggar affect the way we live each day? How can we cultivate this identity? Citizens of God’s kingdom should grieve over their sin and sin in the world. Are there some sins easier for us to grieve over than others? Why or Why not? What sins are easier to overlook? What sins are easier to bring to God? In the parable of son (Luke 15), the son realizes he is no longer worthy after his attempts to take care of himself. What ways have you attempted to “prove” yourself worthy to God. Why does this seem to always fall short?
