1993-94 ECHL Card Set for Hockey Blast Information Booklet Introduction 1993-94 was the sixth season of the East Coast Hockey League. Four expansion franchises (Charlotte, South Carolina, Huntington, and Roanoke) joined the league, increasing the number of teams to 19. Award winners that season were as follows: MVP: Joe Flanagan (Birmingham) – 54 G, 72 A, 126 Pts in 62 games Leading Scorer: Phil Berger (Greensboro) – 56 G, 83 A, 139 Pts in 68 games Rookie of the Year: Dan Gravelle (Greensboro) – 38 G, 66 A, 104 Pts in 58 games Defenseman of the Year: Tom Nemeth (Dayton) – 16 G, 82 A, 98 Pts in 66 games Goalie of the Year: Cory Cadden (Knoxville) – 26-8-4, 3.09 GAA, .898 SV% in 40 games Hockey history was made on the ice that season as Manon Rheaume and Erin Whitten, the first two female goaltenders in professional hockey, recorded their first wins. Whitten became the first to pick up a victory for Toledo on October 30, 1993, replacing an injured Alain Harvey at the beginning of the second period and stopping 15 of 19 shots in a 6-5 win over Dayton. Rheaume became the first female ECHL goalie to start and win a game on November 6, 1993 when she made 32 saves for Knoxville in a 9-6 victory over Johnstown. Knoxville captured its second Brabham Cup as regular season champions but were upset by Louisville in the first round of the playoffs, just as they were in 1990-91 when they finished first overall.

  • When She's Gone
When She’s Gone Steven Erikson © Steven Erikson 2004 The game got in our blood when the Selkirk Settlers first showed up at the forks of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. Not hard to figure out why. They were farmers one and all and given land along the rivers, each allotment the precise dimensions of a hockey rink. Come winter the whole world froze up and there was nothing to do but skate and whack at frozen rubber discs with hickory sticks. Those first leagues were vicious. There were two major ones, the Northwest League and the Hudson's Bay League. Serious rivals and it all came to a head when Louis Riel, left-wing for the Voyageurs, jumped leagues and signed with the Métis Traders right there at the corner of Portage and Main, posing with a buffalo hide signing bonus. The whole territory went up in flames–the Riel Rebellion–culminating in the slaughter of nineteen Selkirk fans. Redcoats came from the east and refereed the mob that strung Riel up and hung him until dead. The Northwest League got merged into the Hudson's Bay League shortly afterward and a troubled peace came to the land. It was the first slapshot fired in anger, but it wouldn't be the last. The game We sold our soul. No point in complaining, no point in blaming anyone else, not the Yanks, not anyone else. We've done it ourselves and if you were a Yank you'd be saying the same thing. If your country was Italy, France or Belgium, if the city you called home was in England or Scotland or Wales, you're saying the same thing I'm saying right now, at least you'd be if you were thinking about what I'm thinking about.

  • FOOTBALL in the UNITED KINGDOM by Alan Needham Which
FOOTBALL IN THE UNITED KINGDOM by Alan Needham Which N.F.L. game would you consider the most important of the decade so far? The Rams- Oilers matchup in 1984, when Eric Dickerson broke O.J. Simpson's single-season rushing record? Maybe the Bears-Saints game of the same year, when Walter Payton topped Jim Brown to become the all-time rushing champ? How about the Dallas-Cowboys versus Pittsburgh game during week 1 of the 1982 season? American sports fans may not consider the 36-28 Steelers' victory as a milestone in football history, but to a British counterpart the game is seen as a seed in the growth of the sport in the U.K. In September 1982, one of the true rarities of British society occurred -- a new TV station went on the air. Channel 4, the first new station to be set up for 25 years, was intended to cater for minority groups in the community -- Asians, Blacks, Irish, etc. At the time, football fans, or people who had the vaguest idea about quarterbacks, linebackers, etc. were definitely in a minority. On September 7th, three days after the launch of C4, the first football program was aired. Called simply "American Football," the program featured the Cowboys-Steelers game, and a thorough check on the basic rules. The viewing figures for the program were a mere 750,000. Since then, football has taken off so rapidly in such a short space of time. Super Bowl XX is believed to have been seen by 10 million people at some time during the game, N.F.L.
