Women Deliver Joins Coalition of Partners to Announce “Girls, Women and the Global Goals,” at 2016 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting New York, NY , September 20th– At the 12th and final Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting, Women Deliver joined No Ceilings: The Full Participation Project, an initiative of the Clinton Foundation, Vital Voices Global Partnership, WEConnect International, and a coalition of over 30 core partners from the public, private, and multilateral sectors to announce a new series of commitments that aim to address significant gender gaps and advance the gender equality targets of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Amicus Brief Filed by CGRS in S-F- Overview of the Attached Brief The attached amicus brief was filed by the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS or Center) to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) in May 2008. in the matter of S-F-. Identifying information has been redacted in accordance with the wishes of the applicant. The brief addresses forced marriage as a basis for asylum and persecution on account of political opinion and membership in a particular social group of “young, single daughters of an ethnic group in Senegal who oppose forced marriage.” The brief also argues against an adverse credibility finding by an immigration judge. Organizational Overview The Center provides legal expertise, training, and resources to attorneys representing asylum seekers, advocates to protect refugees, advances refugee law and policy, and uses domestic, regional and international human rights mechanisms to address the root causes of persecution. Technical Assistance Provided by CGRS As part of our core programs, CGRS engages in technical assistance and country conditions research for attorneys with gender-based, LGBTI, and child asylum claims. We provide free invaluable resources: legal consultation, country conditions information, practice advisories, unpublished immigration judge and Board of Immigration Appeals decisions, sample briefs, and expert witness affidavits developed by leading authorities in their fields in collaboration with CGRS. Reporters May Contact: Fiona Hill, Bank of America, 1.980.387.8687 [email protected] Kathy O’Hearn, Vital Voices, 917.885.4489 [email protected] Vital Voices and Bank of America Host Mentoring Program to Empower Women Leaders From Across the Asia Pacific Region SYDNEY – On Monday, October 3, Vital Voices Global Partnership and Bank of America will launch a week-long mentorship initiative in Sydney to advance women leaders from business, social enterprise and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Asia Pacific region. This effort, which is part of the ongoing Global Ambassadors Program (#GlobalAmbassadors), a Vital Voices and Bank of America partnership, will include one- on-one mentoring sessions and strategic workshops focused on building organizational management, financial acumen and leadership skills. In the context of the one year anniversary of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, a series of ambitious targets to end extreme poverty and tackle climate change by 2030, the week will center on the theme “Empowering Women Leaders to Advance Sustainable Development,” underscoring the critical role that women can play in moving their nations forward. The Asia Pacific region as a whole, especially South Asia, has significant room for improvement on basic issues such as protecting women from violence or upholding their rights to property, as well as on indicators in key areas including nutrition, health, education, employment and political participation1. The program recognizes that women leaders in the region can help transform their countries and build thriving economies: closing the gender gap in the Asia Pacific labor market could increase GDP by 30 percent per capita2. -

ANNUALANNUAL REPORTREPORT Amref Health Africa in the USA 2017 WE ARE AN AFRICAN-LED ORGANIZATION TRANSFORMING AFRICAN HEALTH FROM WITHIN AFRICA We strengthen health systems and train African health workers to respond to the continent’s health challenges: maternal and child health, non-com- municable and infectious diseases, access to clean water and sanitation, and surgical and clinical out- reach. Our approach is community-based and makes the people we reach partners, rather than just beneficiaries. Amref Health Africa ANNUAL REPORT 2017 2 WELCOME TO OUR ANNUAL REPORT 2017 was a landmark year for Amref Health Africa as we celebrated our 60th anniversary. Six decades of equipping African communities with the knowledge and tools to build sustainable and effective health systems. Thanks en- tirely to our donors. We hope you are proud to call yourselves a part of the Amref Health Africa family. In 2017 alone, we reached 9.6 million people with health services and trained 125,000 health workers thanks to your support. This achieve- ment should not be downplayed, especially within the context of the US Government drastically reducing their budget to foreign humanitarian aid, with the greatest cut to family planning programs. The people hardest hit by these cuts are women and children, the population that we primarily serve. We met this challenge head on and boosted our work in raising awareness of what we do in Africa and reaching more supporters. Our second annual ArtBall was bigger on all fronts and allowed us to engage with a vibrant com- munity of artists, art lovers, and musicians. -

Date: June 12, 2020 Name: Lillian Chioma Nwosu CEU eTD Collection Signature: ii Abstract This thesis examines the impact of colonialism and military regimes on the development of political philosophy and government in postcolonial African countries, using Nigeria as a case study. Particularly, it interrogates the nature of the social contract in precolonial times, colonial times, and precolonial times. Using the Women’s War of 1929, it draws a contrast between the nature of the social contract in precolonial and colonial times. This thesis finds that while colonialism eroded the political systems and philosophies of the peoples of precolonial Nigeria, both colonialism and military rule heavily contributed to a strong culture of state authoritarianism, and the social contract was severely weakened by both events. -
