For years this community was simply known as the “Indian Settlement.” After the stone church was built in 1853 it was called “St. Peter’s” to which “Dynevor” was added after 1876. Following the 1871 signing of Treaty One, bands have met yearly to collect

the annuity payment from the representative of the Queen. The annual treaty

payment and “Treaty Days” celebration is a practice that has continued annually

for 145 years.

The “Treaty Days” celebration brought families together to camp, enjoy visiting, 145TH COMMEMORATION food, dance and music. This year is a 145 commemoration year in tribute to the first Treaty Days gathering during the signing of Treaty One.

Treaty One was signed August 3, 1871. Peguis celebrates: “145 Years of Peguis Treaty Days and the signing of Treaty

Families travelled from hunting and fishing camps to sign Treaty One in 1871 with the Queen and receive the very first annuity payment. The “Treaty” signified peace between the “Indian Bands” and the settlers.

A “Treaty” is an agreement under international law entered into by sovereign states. The Treaty allowed settlers use of the land in exchange for certain rights and privileges. QUALITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE Chief Cindy Spence Ladies Hat & Boot Special

The involvement of Native Americans in the cattle industry dates back to the late-nineteenth century. With the loss of the buffalo as a means of sustenance, many tribes turned to cattle as a way of helping them and their families survive. It offered an alternative to farming…which most tribes weren’t used to. It also gave people an opportunity to ride horses for a living and they continued the tradition of competition with one another when rodeos arrived at the turn of the twentieth century. Horse culture lifestyle continues for many Native American families today.

Chief Cindy Spence and her family live that lifestyle today. They enjoy riding and are all members of the Peguis Horse Riding Association.

As the Okitchida-Qwe (woman leader) of Peguis, Chief Spence is committed to sponsoring a Special at the annual pow wow. Last year, she “Native American men and women, boys and girls gather on the edge of honoured the Jingle Dress and Fancy Dance categories. This year, she is the arena as a traditional drum group begins to beat out their song. Strong excited to host the LADIES HAT & BOOT SPECIAL. voices rise in harmony. Sabrina Pourier steps out on the floor. She begins to dance. Her feet step and kick. Her body glides up and down…turning, The dance style is relatively new. What it does is to demonstrate the lady bending, swirling. But this isn’t a ballet. This is a Lakota cowgirl hard at horse riders turning into a dancer. A lot of rodeo people are dancers and work. Riding her horse. Moving the herd. That can be seen in the way she they love being cowboys and having that part of life…plus experiencing raises her arms and moves her lariat. In the way her boots hit the stirrups culture. The Hat & Boot dance is a kind of a cool mix of cowboy/cowgirl that are only in her imagination. In the way she stays in the saddle as and dancer. As well it demonstrates someone’s personality…their the fleeting terrain below her changes with the rhythm.” Native American individuality as a dancer and as a horse rider.
