  • Independent Broadcaster Licence Renewals
February 15, 2018 Filed Electronically Mr. Chris Seidl Secretary General Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N2 Dear Mr. Seidl: Re: Select broadcasting licences renewed further to Broadcasting Notice of Consultation CRTC 2017-183: Applications 2017-0821-5 (Family Channel), 2017-0822-3 (Family CHRGD), 2017- 0823-1 (Télémagino), 2017-0841-3 (Blue Ant Television General Partnership), 2017-0824-9 (CHCH-DT), 2017-0820-8 (Silver Screen Classics), 2017-0808-3 (Rewind), and 2017-0837-2 (Knowledge). The Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) is the national association representing approximately 2,200 professional screenwriters working in English-language film, television, radio, and digital media production in Canada. The WGC is actively involved in advocating for a strong and vibrant Canadian broadcasting system containing high-quality Canadian programming. Given the WGC’s nature and membership, our comments are limited to the applications of those broadcasters who generally commission programming that engages Canadian screenwriters, and in particular those who significantly invest in programs of national interest (PNI). The WGC conditionally supports the renewal of the above-noted services, subject to our comments below. Executive Summary ES.1 The Commission set out its general approach to Canadian programming expenditure (CPE) and PNI requirements in Broadcasting Regulatory Policy CRTC 2015-86, Let’s Talk TV: The way forward - Creating compelling and diverse Canadian programming (the Create Policy). In it, the Commission was clear that CPE was a central pillar of the regulatory policy framework for Canadian television broadcasting, and that the guiding principle for setting CPE levels for independent broadcasters would be historical spending levels.

  • Hockey Night in Canada French Notes
Hockey Night in Canada French notes – because the French version of HNIC is different than the English version in the French translation, note that these questions are about the English version. Then in the French version we will add 2 questions – we will duplicate Qs 6&7 asking if they notice and difference/like the changes from the old French Version to the new. 1. Thinking about Canadian culture and identity, how important is the game of hockey? Hockey defines Canadian culture Hockey is an important part of Canadian culture – and so are other things Hockey isn’t really a big factor in Canadian culture Hockey is just a game and has nothing to do with Canadian culture 2. Now thinking specifically about NHL hockey, how important is it to Canadian culture and identity? Very Important Important Not very important Totally unimportant 3. How important is NHL hockey to you? I’m a diehard fan I’m a fan A lot of other interests come before hockey I don’t care about hockey at all 4. Since the 2014 season began last month, how many NHL games have you watched on TV? More than four 2 or 3 One None 5. As you may know, Rogers Sportsnet now owns the rights to Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC) broadcast, along with most hockey media rights to games across the country, in a 12-year, $5.2 billion deal with the NHL. The rights to Hockey Night in Canada were previously owned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Last month, the first Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts aired on Rogers, and were simulcast on CBC.

VICELAND ORDERS ROUND TWO OF DARK SIDE OF THE RING BELL MEDIA’S STREAMING SERVICE CRAVE COMES ON BOARD AS PRODUCTION PARTNER FOR SEASON TWO PRO WRESTLING DOCU-SERIES BOASTED HIGHEST RATED PREMIERE IN THE CHANNEL'S HISTORY July 23, 2019 – BEVERLY HILLS, CA: VICELAND, the Emmy-winning youth lifestyle and entertainment network from VICE Media and A+E Networks, has renewed its popular docu-series DARK SIDE OF THE RING, it was announced today at the Television Critics Association semi-annual Press Tour in Los Angeles by VICELAND president Guy Slattery. DARK SIDE OF THE RING will become a Crave Original series, with Season 1 set to have its Canadian premiere this fall, only on Crave. The second season pick-up comes after the critically praised DARK SIDE racked up the best premiere ratings in P18-49 and total viewers (P2+) of any series in the channel's three-year history,* garnering attention from some of the sport’s superstars, including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson who tweeted his love of the show, saying: "We were thrilled with the positive response to Dark Side when it debuted," said Slattery, "the enthusiasm from fans and non-fans alike was contagious. We can't wait to tell more of these stories." The second season of the series, which is currently in production, will almost double the initial episode order, with ten hour-long examinations of the collision of fantasy and reality and the stars' larger-than-life characters in and out of the ring from returning executive producers Evan Husney and Jason Eisener.
