The Valdemar books can be broken down into different series, with some standalone novels. This is a summary of the various books and how they fall into each series chronologicallyin terms of the overall storyline. The books span approximately years of history. Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar year after each title indicates the year of the original publication of each individual book. These are set in pre-historysome years before the founding of Valdemar. They describe the events which precipitate the Mage Stormsand heavily involve gryphonscreatures created by the Urthothe Mage of Silence. Co-protagonists include Skandranon Rashkae, a princely but proud ebony gryphon, and Amberdrakea spirit-healer, called a kestra'chern. These occur some centuries before the Heralds of Valdemar books, telling the life story of Vanyel Ashkevron. By the time of the "later" Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar he has become legend, thus explaining some of the small inconsistencies. The series marked Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar novel-length return to Valdemar after a five-year hiatus, focusing on the founding of the Heralds' Collegium through the eyes of a former mine slave, Mags. Mags was once an enslaved orphan living a harsh life in the mines, until the King's Own Herald discovered his talent and trained him as a spy. Now a Herald in his own right, at the newly established Heralds' CollegiumMags has found a supportive family, including his Companion Dallen. Each of their three children comes of age in their own novel. This is a stand-alone Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar, set somewhere between the Herald Spy and the Heralds books. It describes another legendary character briefly referenced in the latter, Lavan Firestorm. These precede the Heralds of Valdemar books, centering on the characters Tarma and Kethry. These characters appeared first in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword and Sorceress series, and were revisited in subsequent short stories. Two of these short stories are woven into the Vows and Honor books as part of a longer narrative. The original Vows and Honor pair of books were linked together with By the Sword published long before Oathblood as a trilogy. The third volume, Oathbloodis made up entirely of short stories in place of a longer narrative. With its publication, nearly all of the Tarma and Kethry stories were available together in a single compiled volume for the first time. The prequels include the story of Skifa street orphan who eventually becomes an important Herald with unique gifts, magical and otherwise. They also include the origin story of the famous Weaponsmaster Alberichhis Choosing and the Tedrel Wars. These center on the character Taliawho from the moment of being Chosen by her Companion Rolan becomes the very special and hard-working Queen's Own Herald. This is a stand-alone novel which connects the Vows and Honor sub-series to the Heralds and other trilogies, introducing the character Kerowyn who features therein. Kerowyn is the granddaughter of Kethry from the Vows and Honor sub-series. These follow on from the original Heralds of Valdemar trilogy, centering on Princess Elspeth completing her transformation from "the Brat" to a fully-fledged Herald. Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar protagonists include Skif and a new character Darkwind. These follow on again, centering on the characters Karal and An'desha as Velgarth is threatened by a repetition of the Cataclysm described in the Mage Wars trilogy. This trilogy also focuses on the threat posed to Valdemar by the vast Eastern Empire and the development of the newly-formed Alliance between Valdemar and its surrounding nations. The Owl trilogy takes place several years after the events of the Mage Stormsand follows the character Darian. The story focuses on the repercussions of the Mage Storms on Valdemar's northern border, and centers on new tensions between the kingdom and invading barbarians from beyond the Ice Wall Mountains. The anthologies usually include one novella by Mercedes Lackey accompanied by a dozen or more short stories written by other fantasy and science fiction authors. The stories are set within the world of Velgarthand many of Lackey's stories make reference to characters featured previously in other Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar novels and series. Many of the stories follow one or more characters from one anthology to the next, forming a miniseries within the anthologies. The miniseries are listed here: Miniseries. There are also a few miscellaneous works, including a novella and some short stories that have not been collected into an anthology as yet. These include:. Sign In Don't have an account? The primary plot Selenay being a featherheaded teenager is eyeroll-inducing at best, but I do like just about everything from Alberich's perspective, and his romance is charming and realistic, which is a nice change from all of the fated and sort of dire pairings we've seen so far. Two small rants, though: - Selenay is the Queen, had been raised from birth to rule, in an environment that has been firmly est I don't think this is quite as strong a book as Exile's Honor, but I like it well enough. Two small rants, though: - Selenay is the Queen, had been Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar from birth to rule, in an environment that has been firmly established to teach practical politics very, very well. How the hell is she not aware that a neighboring country has unmarried Princes of more or less relevant ages? They have treaties! Trade agreements! Ambassadors back and forth! The few pages she spends wondering if there are any eligible foreign men about undercut that entire plot for me. There's just no frigging way she's ignorant about such Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar fundamental detail. I like her, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. The name is a bit over the top, perhaps, but she's a good character who fits a useful role in the story, and has many fewer Mary Sue qualities than, say, Vanyel who is perfect in every way. There are damned few middle-aged women who get to do awesome things in fantasy novels, and the more, the better. Especially when they get the guy in the end, too. Jan 11, Len Evans Jr rated it it was amazing Shelves: mercedes-lackey. I think this book was even better the second Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar around. I always love noticing stuff I missed the first time around And sometimes it is the silliest things Last page Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar Chapter Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar pg in the paperback version. The line is "chattering like a flock of noisy little birds, and he with the look of a man being nibbled to death by ducks". All I can say is Ms. Lackey has a cruel streak, cuz I have seen a flock of ducks go crazy for a bunch of bread and you would not want to ever be their target. It would be a VERY slow agonizing death! Anyway, with this being my 2nd or 3rd read for the Valdemar series I have to say I am really enjoying falling in love with the world she created all over again. It was great in this series to finally get Alberich's full story as well as so much of Selenay's background filled in. A definite must read! Jul 12, Olga Godim rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy-scifi. To my surprise, I Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar read this book before. I thought I read all the Valdemar novels long ago. Obviously not. Along the way, he is doing the other part of his duties, teaching weapons and fighting techniques to the students of the three Collegiums: the Bards, the Healers, and the Heralds. Alberich is one of t To my surprise, I never read this book before. Alberich is one of the two protagonists and POV persons in this story. Another is the young Queen Selenay, who is grieving for her father, slain during the recent war, and simultaneously dreaming of love and romance, as any other young woman. Neither character is depicted very well. Neither feels alive. To every page of action, there are at least two pages of explanations and contemplations. In fact, explanations, preaching, and pointless data dumps dominate this book. I read to the end only for the plot, even though I had to wade through the unnecessary verbiage to get from one turning point to another. Shelves: fictionfantasynovels. I do love Lackey's Valdemar and picked up the earlier books eagerly. For me they're the equivalent of bookly comfort food. But I was disappointed in the earlier book centered on Alberich, Exile's Honorand I'm afraid this sequel to it is no improvement. It's a common criticism of Lackey that she's very black and white in her worldview and characterizations. That doesn't suit in fleshing out the supposedly intimidating Alberich, who hails from Valdemar's traditional enemy, Karse. It also doesn't I do love Lackey's Valdemar and picked up the earlier books eagerly. It also doesn't help with the major plot-line of the book, which deals with Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar young Queen Selenay's first marriage; Prince Karathanelan practically has stamped on his head: I'm a walking disaster--which makes Selenay rather stupid for ever finding him appealing, especially given how much is made of her struggle not to have herself married off by her council. If you're new to Lackey and her Valdemar, I'd try Arrows of the Queen or Magic's Pawn Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar an Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar instead--I can't recommend this one to anyone but hardcore fans. Apr 21, Amy rated it liked it Shelves: fantasyvamp-were- faechallenge. Exile's Valor was a decent book; entertaining with some poignant parts and I liked getting to spend more time with Alberich. However, it was very much more YA than Exile's Honor, and it seemed like Selenay - who came across as very mature in the prior book - lost most of Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar brain for the majority of this story. Also, it can't possibly be that difficult to come up with some evidence against the 'patron'. They have at least two of the coded now decoded letters that were being passed, and those Exile's Valor was a decent book; entertaining with some poignant parts and I liked getting to spend more time with Exiles Valor: A Novel of Valdemar. They have at least two of the coded now decoded letters that were being passed, and those letters contain information that the queen had to have confided in someone. By the end of the book, when she's accepted that the courtship and marriage were a sham to steal her throne, it should be a simple enough matter to show her the letters and ask who she confided the information to. As has been pointed out by multiple characters, it's not like there are many possibilities, and she should recognize the importance of ousting and hanging for treason whoever passed such personal information in a conspiracy to have her killed and Valdemar ruled by a tyrant regent. Overall, I would have liked Exile's Valor a lot more if it had been written in the same adult tone as Exile's Honor.
