PASTORAL CORNER APRIL 26, 2020

Dear Parishioners,

Do you sometimes feel alone, abandoned and without peace of mind?

After the death of Jesus the apostles had this feeling of being orphaned and without a leader. Add to this the feeling of fear that was constantly being fed to their minds by the Jews.

While in a room meeting, and in the midst of their loneliness and fear, Jesus appeared to them and told them, “Peace be with you”, perhaps to assure His apostles of His abiding presence.

The peace that Jesus gives is something that is elusive to many of us for the reason that the peace that Jesus gives is not a byproduct of accumulation of money and power.

We may all have the wealth and power in this world but if we don’t have Jesus we would still be without peace of mind. We would still be yearning for something far greater than wealth and that is to have peace within our- selves.

Jesus in the gospel greeted His followers: “Peace be with you”, not once, not twice, but three times, as if to say, amidst your difficulties continue to believe that I have risen, continue to have faith in me, and continue to be faithful to me because I’m the only one who can give you peace.

Your wealth will not give you peace, it may even give you endless depression and pressure. Your power, what- ever it is, will not give you peace as well. Your friends may give you fleeting happiness but not peace of mind.

Who then can give you this feeling of true peace that this world cannot give you? It’s no other than Jesus! He alone can give you this elusive peace and serenity. Amidst the many difficulties in your life Jesus is always there to give you peace.

Lord my God, my family all around the world is struggling to battle with the enemy (Covid 19) right now. I pray that you give them strength. Oh Lord Almighty Father allow peace in their lives. Bless them, guard them under your wings from the pandemic, protect them against all evil. Love them with your precious blood, wash them white as snow. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

          Fr. Dominic Savio, HGN

FAITH FORMATION

Children’s Weekly Gospel Reflection: Road to Emmaus This week’s gospel from Luke begins with Jesus and his disciples walking together on their way from Jerusalem to the town of Emmaus. As they walk, Jesus tells them many stories from the bible, stories to help them know more about His good news. But they do not realize that they are indeed about Him. It is not until later, that they ask Jesus to stay and rest for the evening with them that he shares a meal with them. During this meal, he breaks bread with them and then they know, “Were not our hearts burning within us?” How do you walk with and get to know Jesus?

THE ROAD TO EMMAUS SCRIPTURE MEDITATION ACTIVITY

The disciples said that their hearts were burning within them when Jesus opened up the Scriptures and explained their meaning to them. Spend more time reading the Bible in a deeper way. Here is a list of ways we can reflect more deeply on the Word of God in the Bible. Pick at least one way in which you will allow Christ to touch your heart by opening up the Scriptures and test it out by rereading the Road to Emmaus story. (Luke 24:1335) Research the Reading:Read the footnotes in your Bible. Search for videos, commentaries, and explanations that describe the meaning of a Bible story or verse.

Pick a Word:Read a Bible passage and pick one word that is meaningful to you. Why do you think God wants you to reflect on this word today?

Pick a Phrase:Read a Bible passage and pick a phrase or sentence that you find interesting. Re read this phrase over and over again and ask the Lord to help you find meaning within it today.

STEWARDSHIP Operational Update Have you noticed that the days blend together and the week both flies by and drags on at the same time? We find that is certainly true here at the Pastoral Center. The staff and our Priests are all doing some combination of working remotely from home and limited office time. That means our Pastoral Center, while closed to the public, is open to receive phone calls, mail deliveries, and no contact drop offs. If you are interested in scheduling a mass intention, purchasing a perpetual candle, requesting a bulletin to be mailed to you, speaking with a priest, or would prefer to drop off your offertory donation in person, please call the office at (207) 7737746 between 9am and 4pm. We always have someone in the office to answer the phone during those hours. Thank you everyone who celebrates Mass with us using either live streaming on the web or via Facebook live. It is a source of joy to our priests and Pastoral Center staff. For example, this past weekend, 493 people joined Fr. Kevin for the Sunday Vigil Mass at 4:30pm on Saturday, 1,119 of you joined Bishop Deeley for Sunday Mass at 10am, and 269 of you joined Frs. Kevin and Dominic for the Divine Mercy service. We know there are still some glitches with both the live streaming and Facebook Live feeds and this week we had technicians in again making improvements. Sacred Heart/St. Dominic’s Food Pantry continues to serve over 110 families, about 350 people total, each week. The small but dedicated group of volunteers prepares Grab n Go boxes on Monday afternoons and distributes them on Tuesdays from 9:00am M 11:30am. They also just received a grant of $800 from the Good Sheperd Food Bank. If you are interested in donating, please send your check payable to SHSD Food Pantry c/o Pastoral Center 307 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04101. St. Vincent de Paul’s Soup Kitchen is preparing about 100 Grab n Go lunch bags a day. They are in need of donations to purchase food to prepare these Grab n Go lunches for the homeless, and NOW, unemployed individuals. If you are interested in donating, please send your check payable to St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen c/o Pastoral Center 307 Congress Street Portland, ME 04101. Thank you for all your emails that you have signed up for WeShare. They are greatly appreciated. I want to explain why there always seems to be a lag in reporting the WeShare donations. There are three factors that determine when the Parish will receive the donation. The first depends on the frequency that you the parishioner gives, if it is once a month, biweekly or weekly, and, of course, all of these are greatly appreciated. The second depends on if your donation is via ACH from your checking or savings account or via credit/debit card. While the fees are very low for both funding methods, the tradeoff is ACH transactions take 7 business days to process from when the donation is made. The longer processing time virtually ensures that all donations are processed. Occasionally there is a declined transaction because the credit card on file has declined or the expiration date has change. With all of that said, if you have not already signed for online giving via WeShare, I prayerfully ask you to consider doing so. You can also mail in your offertory to the Pastoral Center at 307 Congress St. Portland, ME 04101. I appreciate that we all need to be very practical about what we can give during this time and thank you again for your support. The offertory for this past Sunday is below. Please note, the Chancery extended our remittance deadline for all second collections by one additional week. Hence, you will see the second collections from last week still listed.
