  • Red Bengal's Rise and Fall
kheya bag RED BENGAL’S RISE AND FALL he ouster of West Bengal’s Communist government after 34 years in power is no less of a watershed for having been widely predicted. For more than a generation the Party had shaped the culture, economy and society of one of the most Tpopulous provinces in India—91 million strong—and won massive majorities in the state assembly in seven consecutive elections. West Bengal had also provided the bulk of the Communist Party of India– Marxist (cpm) deputies to India’s parliament, the Lok Sabha; in the mid-90s its Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu, had been spoken of as the pos- sible Prime Minister of a centre-left coalition. The cpm’s fall from power also therefore suggests a change in the equation of Indian politics at the national level. But this cannot simply be read as a shift to the right. West Bengal has seen a high degree of popular mobilization against the cpm’s Beijing-style land grabs over the past decade. Though her origins lie in the state’s deeply conservative Congress Party, the challenger Mamata Banerjee based her campaign on an appeal to those dispossessed and alienated by the cpm’s breakneck capitalist-development policies, not least the party’s notoriously brutal treatment of poor peasants at Singur and Nandigram, and was herself accused by the Communists of being soft on the Maoists. The changing of the guard at Writers’ Building, the seat of the state gov- ernment in Calcutta, therefore raises a series of questions. First, why West Bengal? That is, how is it that the cpm succeeded in establishing

  • Land Acquisition and Compensation in Singur: What Really Happened?∗
Land Acquisition and Compensation in Singur: What Really Happened?∗ Maitreesh Ghatak,† Sandip Mitra,‡ Dilip Mookherjee§and Anusha Nath¶ March 29, 2012 Abstract This paper reports results of a household survey in Singur, West Bengal concerning compensation offered by the state government to owners of land acquired to make way for a car factory. While on average compensations offered were close to the reported market valuations of land, owners of high grade multi-cropped (Sona) lands were under- compensated, which balanced over-compensation of low grade mono-cropped (Sali) lands. This occurred owing to misclassification of most Sona land as Sali land in the official land records. Under-compensation relative to market values significantly raised the chance of compensation offers being rejected by owners. There is considerable ev- idence of the role of financial considerations in rejection decisions. Land acquisition significantly reduced incomes of owner cultivator and tenant households, despite their efforts to increase incomes from other sources. Agricultural workers were more adversely affected relative to non-agricultural workers, while the average impact on workers as a whole was insignificant. Adverse wealth effects associated with under-compensation significantly lowered household accumulation of consumer durables, while effects on other assets were not perceptible. Most households expressed preferences for non-cash forms of compensation, with diverse preferences across different forms of non-cash com- pensation depending on occupation and time preferences. ∗We are grateful to Mr. Atmaram Saraogi of International Centre, Kolkata for sharing with us relevant documents, and the International Growth Centre for financial support under Research Award RA-2009-11- 025 (RST-U145).

Review of ReseaRch CITIZENS’ PREFERENCES FOR URBAN PARKS OF KOLKATA MUNICIPAL CORPORATION: A TRAVEL COST APPROACH Dr. Laxmi Narayan Saha issN: 2249-894X impact factoR : 5.7631(Uif) Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Panihati UGc appRoved JoURNal No. 48514 Mahavidyalaya, Barasat Road, Sodepur, Kolkata. volUme - 8 | issUe - 8 | may - 2019 ABSTRACT: The urban environment is subject to pollution, degradation and other negative externalities. These losses include the loss of green and open spaces. As urban centres grow, concretised surfaces take over these spaces. While this process seems unavoidable, across the world, cities also prioritise provisioning of green spaces for their citizens and the ecosystem at large. Planning open and green spaces in the forms of parks, squares, gardens and avenues is common in Indian cities as well. Such environmental resources provide valuable attributes, however, remain unrecognized by us, as it is mostly unpriced and thereby undervalued. Environmental entities, however, have been assessed with the help of non-market valuation techniques. This paper attempts to assess citizens’ preferences for green spaces in their own city by using the Travel Cost Method, which is a choice based model where travel cost is used as a proxy for the price of visiting the parks or gardens (representing open green space). The study is based on Kolkata. Based upon visitors’ surveys conducted across eight parks in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the study has attempted to find variations in the relative importance that people attach to such destinations. Travel characteristics such as travel time, travel cost, distance, timing of visit and time spent are analysed alongside respondents’ characteristics like income per month, age etc.

  • Setting the Stage: a Materialist Semiotic Analysis Of
SETTING THE STAGE: A MATERIALIST SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY BENGALI GROUP THEATRE FROM KOLKATA, INDIA by ARNAB BANERJI (Under the Direction of Farley Richmond) ABSTRACT This dissertation studies select performance examples from various group theatre companies in Kolkata, India during a fieldwork conducted in Kolkata between August 2012 and July 2013 using the materialist semiotic performance analysis. Research into Bengali group theatre has overlooked the effect of the conditions of production and reception on meaning making in theatre. Extant research focuses on the history of the group theatre, individuals, groups, and the socially conscious and political nature of this theatre. The unique nature of this theatre culture (or any other theatre culture) can only be understood fully if the conditions within which such theatre is produced and received studied along with the performance event itself. This dissertation is an attempt to fill this lacuna in Bengali group theatre scholarship. Materialist semiotic performance analysis serves as the theoretical framework for this study. The materialist semiotic performance analysis is a theoretical tool that examines the theatre event by locating it within definite material conditions of production and reception like organization, funding, training, availability of spaces and the public discourse on theatre. The data presented in this dissertation was gathered in Kolkata using: auto-ethnography, participant observation, sample survey, and archival research. The conditions of production and reception are each examined and presented in isolation followed by case studies. The case studies bring the elements studied in the preceding section together to demonstrate how they function together in a performance event. The studies represent the vast array of theatre in Kolkata and allow the findings from the second part of the dissertation to be tested across a variety of conditions of production and reception.

  • 2. Adeshwar Bhagwan's Panch Kalyanak Puja
Jai Jinendra Brief Explanations about Various Pujas we perform at JSGD Temple. 1. Snatra Puja: This is a common Puja widely performed by most of the Deravasi Jain worshipers. It is also a starting Puja before any other main Puja. Snatra Puja has been composed by Pandit Shri Veer Vijayji Maharaj in a very poetic style. It illustrates the celebration of two of the auspicious (out of five) events (Kalyanaks) occurring in the last life of Tirthankar Bhagwan’s Soul. This Puja and celebration is for all Tirthankars and not specific to any particular one. Two Kalyanaks narrated in this Puja are Chyavan (conception) and Janma (birth) of Tirthankar’s Soul. At the end of this life the soul of Tirthankar reaches its climax and achieves liberation from life and death cycle (attains Moksha). This Puja recital explains the effect of Bhagwan’s birth on the whole universe, narrates how glorious the occasion was and how much joys were shared by all the living souls including all heavenly/hellish souls. Puja in end includes Ashta Prakari Puja (using eight dravyas) and a prayer recital of Shanti (peace) for all living beings and rejoices the event by performing Aarti, Mangal Divo, Shanti Kalash and Chaitya Vandan. 2. Adeshwar Bhagwan’s Panch Kalyanak Puja: This puja is also known as Shri Adinath Panch Kalyanak Puja – i.e. Rushabhdev Bhagwan. It is composed by Shri Dharma Dhurandhar Vijayji Maharaj. Puja narrates all five auspicious events of Adeshwar Bhagwan’s life-last life (Chyavan- Conception, Janma-Birth, Diksha-Monkhood, Kevalgyan-achieving Pure and Perfect Knowledge Omniscience and Nirvan-Moksha-Complete Liberation from birth and death cycle).
