  • Netflix's Documentaries Reveal a Darker Side of Arranged Marriages
Netflix’s documentaries reveal a darker side of Arranged Marriages September 6, 2020 by Anirban Chanda and Sahil Bansal Marriage is considered to be one of the many important institutions that ensure social cohesion in a society. The concept of ‘arranged marriages’ has been a popular part of the Indian culture for centuries now. In India, a noticeable absurdity about ‘arranged’ marriages is the fact that the choice and/or consent of the parties are considered insignificant. Instead, the respective families hijack the entire matchmaking process and negotiate the terms of the nuptial relation. This might seem unreasonable, old-fashioned, and very patriarchal to all those who are not familiar with the customs in India. Several film-makers have made documentaries and movies which portray the nitty-gritty of arranged marriages in the middle and upper-middle-class families in the country. In the recent past, two such films that have attracted several eyeballs are Netflix’s Indian Matchmaking, and a 2017 documentary titled A Suitable Girl. This article endeavors to discuss some parts of these two films while exploring major social factors like caste, class, stereotypical preferences, the role of marriage intermediaries, and the decisional autonomy of bachelorette women, all of which continue to remain a dominant force in choosing life partners in India. It may be prudent, to begin with, a synopsis of the two films that we wish to discuss. A Suitable Girl & Indian Matchmaking The 2017 documentary, A Suitable Girl, narrates the story of three Indian women, Dipti, Ritu, and Amrita. All three of them are educated, middle-class women.

  • Laughing About Caste an Analysis of How Caste Considerations Find Representation in the Genre of English Stand- up Comedy on the Internet in India
Connections: A Journal of Language, Media and Culture Laughing About Caste An analysis of how caste considerations find representation in the genre of English stand- up comedy on the internet in India Shreyashi Ganguly1 1 Department of Sociology, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The literature on humour in India has largely evaded the question of how humour intersects with caste stratification. Not much has been written about humour’s potential to discriminate against certain caste groups of the lower social order. Similarly, the traditional media in India has been silent about the issue of caste following which, social media has emerged as the ‘counter publics’ where caste identity can be collectively and freely expressed. Taking the now flourishing brand of English stand-up comedy on the Internet in India as an entry point, this study investigates if the symbolic articulation of caste identities is at all made possible in this genre. Using a combination of discourse analysis and social media analysis, to examine the jokes produced in stand-up shows, in this paper I try to gauge how frequently, and in what ways, caste finds mention in these performances on the Internet. I find that caste identity, and the associated discrimination, are hardly evoked in the comedians’ discourse. And when spoken about, they are often done so in a disparaging light. I conclude this paper by illuminating the ways in which this disparaging humour bolsters caste discrimination, sustains stereotypes and, in the process, conditions the normalized exclusion of lower-caste groupings from the public sphere.

  • Pass the Remote: 6 Women Shaping the Future of TV
Arts & Humanities Pass the Remote: 6 Women Shaping the Future of TV These directors, screenwriters, and producers — all with Columbia degrees — have found enviable success in the streaming era. By Julia Joy | Spring/Summer 2021 Bijou Karman Nicole Kassell Recent claim to fame: Watchmen Nicole Kassell ’94CC realized she was going to be a filmmaker during the first week of her freshman year at Columbia, when a classmate came into her dorm room and showed her a short film he had made. “It was a total lightning-strike moment,” says Kassell, now an accomplished director and producer who has worked on numerous television series, including Watchmen, The Leftovers, The Killing, and The Americans. “I knew I wanted to do that.” After studying art history at Columbia and film production at NYU, Kassell launched her career with The Woodsman, a daring indie feature starring Kevin Bacon as a convicted child molester trying to reenter society. The 2004 film generated buzz at the Sundance Film Festival, and Kassell began receiving invitations to direct episodes of crime and drama series like Cold Case and The Closer. At the time, there were fewer women filmmakers in the industry. “When I started, I was often the only female director on a series for that season. That’s rarely the case now,” she says. “Producers and writers are putting a lot more effort into making sure people of different genders and ethnicities are behind the camera.” Nicole Kassell (Bijou Karman) Kassell, who won a 2020 Emmy for outstanding limited series as an executive producer of Watchmen, says she is “drawn to stories that leave people thinking and growing.” She refuses to be boxed in by any one style or genre but admits she gravitates toward weighty subjects.

  • “Paying Attention, Growing Up” Matthew 13:1-23
“Paying Attention, Growing Up” Matthew 13:1-23 Brett Younger August 16, 2020 The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And Jesus told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as the seeds were scattered, some fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds feel on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let everyone pay attention!” Then the disciples came and asked him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” He answered, “To you it’s been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it hasn’t been given. For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. The reason I speak to them in parables is that ‘seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.’ With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says: ‘You will indeed listen, but never understand, and you will indeed look, but never perceive.
