In the hours during, after and since Saturday, beyond being featured on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 and “MustSC” segment and Pardon The Interruption, the ESPN “Bottom Line” and on the ESPN.com front page; MLB.com and MLB’s Instagram and Twitter; and NCAA.com, NCAA.com with video and NCAA social media – Pendleton’s notoriety continued to come in. On Monday morning, Collegiate Baseball named Pendleton as a National Player of the Week. Early Monday afternoon, Pendleton was chosen as a candidate for the Golden Spikes Award “Performance of the Week.” Despite leading for the majority of the vote, a late social media blitz for another player saw Pendleton finished as runner-up when the results closed Tuesday. He was chosen No. 1 on the brand-new D1Baseball.com Top 10 Plays on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, the accomplishment was ranked No. 1 as well on NCAA Baseball’s Moments of the Week. Nolan Schanuel (Feb. 23) – Individual honors for the Owls continue to be handed out, as Nolan Schanuel was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week by the league office. Schanuel, a true freshman, had a tremendous start to his collegiate career with three multi-hit, multi-RBI games in a series win over No. 24 UCF. In the opener, his debut, he was 3-for-4 with two 1B, a 2B and four RBI, batting in the three-hole in the Owls’ lineup. The following day, he hit his first college homer as part of a 2-for-5 game, added his second 2B, three runs scored, and two more knocked in. And not to be outdone on Sunday, the Boynton Beach native was 3-for-4, with two singles, a double, a run scored and two RBI. All told, Schanuel recorded three 2B, a home run, eight RBI and four runs scored, a slash line of .533 (8-for-15)/.588/.933, and was flawless in the field. Matt Sparling (March 1) – For the second straight week, a member of the Owls has been named as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball. The honor was bestowed to lefthander Matt Sparling after his dominant pitching performance in the Feb. 28 win over Seton Hall. Sparling’s gem on Sunday helped the Owls finish off a weekend sweep, as part of a 6-1 start to the season. After pitching five innings the previous three years coming in (two in 2018, none in 2019, three in 2020), his second start of 2021 was by far his best in an FAU uniform. He gave up just a first-inning run, then retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced. In fact, in the midst of that span, he was struck by a line drive in the third, walked the next batter, and recovered to only have one more baserunner reach the rest of his outing. He would total 10 K’s over six innings, allow only three hits and a run, and earn his first victory as an Owl.
