1976-1977 Coach: Joe Crozier CALGARY Record: 31-43-7, 69 points COWBOYS Finish: 5th, Western Division Playoffs: Did Not Qualify There were two Cowboys teams in 1976-77: the club that played a tight-checking, pesky game at home, taking advantage of the Corral’s small dimensions, high dasher boards that had no give, and loud, supportive fans to win 26 games, and the malingerers who could not buy a road win, winning just 5 games all year on enemy ice (except in Phoenix for some reason, where the Cowboys were undefeated in four games). As a result, the club was very streaky, depending on where they were playing: an 0-6-1 start segued into a seven-game home win streak. Such was their season, the team playing break-even hockey before a 10-game road losing streak in March sank any hopes of a post-season berth. Joe Crozier’s club finished 31-43-7, fifth in the Western Division. Star Danny Lawson finally bid farewell, traded to Winnipeg in mid-season. Lynn Powis led the team in goals with 30 and points with 60. Behind him was Ron Chipperfield with 27 goals, and Peter Driscoll with 23. The defense was led by Paul Terbenche, John Miszuk and Chris Evans, and as always, Don McLeod played nearly every game in goal, also collecting 9 assists. Off the ice, the team was in trouble, unable to survive in the long term in the Corral, despite strong community support. The Cowboys folded in May 1977, leaving Calgary without major-league hockey until 1980, when the Atlanta Flames relocated to Calgary, also playing in the Corral until the Saddledome was completed in time for the 1984 Winter Olympics.
