'Round Midnight ‘Round Midnight - Song list - Instructions for selecting the music for your event: Please put "YES" next to the songs you would like to have played and "NO" next to the ones you do not want played. Please do not delete songs from the list. If you don't know a particular song or are not sure you want it played, leave it unmarked. Try to make your playlist as inclusive as possible and keep your guests in mind as you go through the selection process. We need to have some flexibility to read the crowd and respond to the audience. Most songs should be left unmarked in order to give ‘Round Midnight the maximum flexibility read the crowd and respond to your guests. Too many “NO” songs limits our ability read to do this. Please limit your “NO” selections to no more than 15 or 20. If you have any special musical requests that do not appear on our song list, please contact me as soon as possible for approval. Because we need to dedicate rehearsal time to learning new material, 8 weeks notice is required for all special requests. Please try to limit additional request to two or three songs, usually a first dance or a special song for the father-daughter and/or mother- groom dance. • Discography of the Turbo Label
The Labels of Joe and Sylvia Robinson The All-Platinum Label was formed by Joe and Sylvia Robinson, husband and wife in New Jersey in 1969. Sylvia Robinson was one-half of the duo Mickey and Sylvia of “Love is Strange” fame. George Kerr and the Robinson’s were responsible for A&R. Joe Robinson had parlayed a music publishing company that he established years before in New York into the All-Platinum, Stang, and Turbo record labels. Artists included his wife Sylvia, The Moments, Brother to Brother, Shirley and Company, Linda Jones, Jack McDuff and Chuck Jackson The labels were All-Platinum, Stang, Turbo and Vibration. All-Platinum distributed Charisma (US) which released Malcolm X recordings, More which released Eldridge Cleaver recordings and Maple which released R&B and Psychedelic. In the late 70’s All-Platinum went bankrupt. The Robinson’s then formed Sugar Hill Records in 1979 with Milton Malden and financial funding of Morris Levy, the owner of Roulette Records and pioneered Rap Music The Sugar Hill label's first record was "Rapper's Delight" (1979) by The Sugarhill Gang, which was also the first Top 40 hip hop single. Afterwards Grandmaster Flash, The Sequence, Funky Four Plus One, Crash Crew, Kool Moe Dee, The West Street Mob, and Melle Mel joined the label. Sugar Hill's in-house producer and arranger was Clifton "Jiggs" Chase. The in-house recording engineer was Steve Jerome. Al Goodman, leader of The Moments, ran the show and George Kerr was a major producer. Joe and Sylvia's sons Joey and Leland were also active in the business.

  • Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, and “I Feel Love”
Thamyris/Intersecting No. 26 (2013) 43–54 Turning the Machine into a Slovenly Machine: Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, and “I Feel Love” Tilman Baumgärtel The track “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer still seems to come out of another world. Even though the song was produced three decades ago, it still sounds alien and futurist. And the world, out of which “I Feel Love” came, has been built out of loops, nothing but loops. The song rattles on and on like a machine gun. The loops appear deceptively simple at first. “I Feel Love” is based on the electronic throb of a pattern out of a few synthesizer notes the sequencer repeats over and over and occasionally transposes. But in the framework of these minimalist preconditions the track develops a field of rhythmic differences, deviations, and shifts. The blunt, mechanical thumping of a machine turns into complex polyrhythms, strict rule turns into confusing diversity, and eventually becomes an organism out of repetitions. Even Donna Summer herself eventually got lost in the confusing labyrinth of rhythms in “I Feel Love.” In this essay I want to show how producer Giorgio Moroder succeeded in trans- forming the clatter of the synthesizer loops of “I Feel Love” into an organic pulse with the help of a relatively simple production trick. Then, I want to discuss how “I Feel Love” systematically dissolves and collapses antithetical oppositions. This pro- duction trick not only lends an organic quality to the mechanical loops, but, in the process, amalgamates nature and technology on a musical level.

Genders OnLine Journal - "I Want It That Way": Teenybopper Music and the Girling of Boy Bands 1/16/12 11:22 PM Genders 35 2002 Copyright ©2002 Ann Kibbey. "I Want It That Way" Back to: Teenybopper Music and the Girling of Boy Bands by GAYLE WALD You are my fire The one desire Believe when I say I want it that way. - Backstreet Boys, "I Want It That Way" [1] Among recent trends in youth music culture, perhaps none has been so widely reviled as the rise of a new generation of manufactured "teenybopper" pop acts. Since the late 1990s, the phenomenal visibility and commercial success of performers such as Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, and 'N Sync has inspired anxious public hand-wringing about the shallowness of youth culture, the triumph of commerce over art, and the sacrifice of "depth" to surface and image. By May 2000, so ubiquitous were the jeremiads against teenybopper pop performers and their fans that Pulse, the glossy in-house magazine of Tower Records, would see fit to mock the popularity of Spears and 'N Sync even as it dutifully promoted their newest releases. Featuring a cover photo of a trio of differently outfitted "Britney" dolls alongside a headline reading "Sells Like Teen Spirit"--a pun on the title of the breakthrough megahit ("Smells Like Teen Spirit") by the defunct rock band Nirvana--Pulse coyly plotted the trajectory of a decade's-long decrescendo in popular music: from the promise of grunge, extinguished with the 1994 suicide of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, to the ascendancy of girl and boy performers with their own look-alike action figures.
