WHO: YALLWEST Is the West Coast Non-Profit Behind the April 10-11 Book Festival of the Same Name, Benefitting Santa Monica Libraries and Santa Monica School Libraries WHO: YALLWEST is the West Coast non-profit behind the April 10-11 book festival of the same name, benefitting Santa Monica libraries and Santa Monica school libraries. Our sister festival YALLFEST (Charleston, S.C.), is now the largest teen and middle grade book festival in the US. In its fifth year, YALLFEST is comprised of more than sixty bestselling or award-winning YA novels, and over 8,000 loyal fans (bloggers, students, families). YALLWEST is the brainchild of a group of BESTSELLING YA AUTHORS and YALLFEST organizers/alumni, including our festival directors Melissa de la Cruz (Disney’s Descendants) and Margaret Stohl (Beautiful Creatures). Additional authors on our board include Kami Garcia (Beautiful Creatures), Pseudonymous Bosch (Secret Series), Marie Lu (Legend), Ransom Riggs (Miss Peregrine’s), Tahereh Mafi (Shatter Me), Gayle Forman (If I Stay), Richelle Mead (Vampire Academy), Leigh Bardugo (Shadow and Bone), Brendan Reichs (Virals), Ally Condie (Matched), Holly Goldberg Sloan (Counting By 7’s) and Veronica Roth (Divergent). Our YALLWEST TEEN AMBASSADORS, including students aged 10-18 from more than a dozen area schools, meet monthly on Sundays at the Santa Monica Main Library to design social media and swag, write book reviews for our sites, and to plan the festival. If your students are interested in joining for the two remaining March meetings, please email us! Our YALLWEST MARKETING TEAM, in consultation with Santa Monica school librarians and the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (our media partner) is preparing short videos, recorded author interviews, still images and other assets for school and library television channels and websites. Our team is also coordinating and sponsoring weekly giveaways at Santa Monica schools and libraries, as well as Los Angeles area independent schools and parochial schools, throughout March prior to the festival. If you would like a giveaway contest at your school, please email us! WHEN: YALLWEST will span the entire weekend of April 10th-12th, 2015. WHAT: Signings, panels, food trucks, bookselling and constant activities, the event is very much a festival. SCHOLASTIC PAPERBACKS Dear Dumb Diary Year Two #2: The Super-Nice Are Super-Annoying Jim Benton Summary Do NOT read Jamie Kelly's top-secret diaries! "Sometimes it amazes me how ingenious I am about everything." --Jamie Kelly We've been with Jamie Kelly through her search for inner beauty, poofy bridesmaid dresses, and desperate attempts to make money during summer vacation. Along the way, she's left us with countless gems of snarky wisdom, such as: "If somebody ever asks you to kick her in the face, the first thing she will do is forget that she asked you to do it," and "As long as you keep laughing at how dumb something is, you can secretly enjoy it without risking your cool." Now Jamie's upcoming diaries have a fresh look and a fun twist. It's Dear Dumb Diary: Scholastic Paperbacks Year Two! The diary entries are still laugh-out-loud funny -- but this is a whole new 9780545377638 beginning. Everything is another year dumber! • The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright a Thesis
The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Amy Bright, 2016 Abstract Recent research by Neilsen reports that adult readers purchase 80% of all young adult novels sold, even though young adult literature is a category ostensibly targeted towards teenage readers (Gilmore). More than ever before, young adult (YA) literature is at the center of some of the most interesting literary conversations, as writers, readers, and publishers discuss its wide appeal in the twenty-first century. My dissertation joins this vibrant discussion by examining the ways in which YA literature has transformed to respond to changing social and technological contexts. Today, writing, reading, and marketing YA means engaging with technological advances, multiliteracies and multimodalities, and cultural and social perspectives. A critical examination of five YA texts – Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens, Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up, John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, and Jaclyn Moriarty’s The Ghosts of Ashbury High – helps to shape understanding about the changes and the challenges facing this category of literature as it responds in a variety of ways to new contexts. In the first chapter, I explore the history of YA literature in order to trace the ways that this literary category has changed in response to new conditions to appeal to and serve a new generation of readers, readers with different experiences, concerns, and contexts over time.

  • Q & a with Allegiant Author, Veronica Roth
Q & A with Allegiant Author, Veronica Roth Q: Who was your inspiration for Four? Where were you when you first imagined Four? A: I don’t generally take inspiration for characters from real people—it’s too much pressure, the idea of capturing an actual person. But when I originally started to write Divergent (four years before I actually finished a draft of it) it was from the perspective of a character named Tobias, who was, like Tris in Divergent, getting a haircut from his father on the day of his Choosing Ceremony. I think I mostly wrote that scene because I loved the formal feeling of the ritual, and I wasn’t thinking that much about the characters. But what I discovered was that there was all this unexpected tension in that beginning between Tobias and his father. Four years later, when I wrote the draft that would become Divergent, Tobias just dumped that tension and strong presence into Tris’s story, almost without my permission. He’d been at the back of my mind for a long time. Q: Which character do you relate with the most in your series? A: It’s hard to say. There are days when I relate most to Jeanine—she has this fear and this intense need to control her surroundings that I really identify with, as an anxious-yet-perfectionistic person. And there are a lot of times when I relate most to Tobias, who just desperately wants to be known for the person he really is, but can only really show himself to one person.
