This is lower than Cyprus had before accession to the EU, but better than the 1999 position, for example, of Greece. The ten countries which entered the EU in May 2004 were a greatly heterogeneous group in terms of per capita GDP. The difference between countries with the highest and lowest economic performance in the pre- accession year 2003 was huge – a difference of 45.6% between the relative per capita GDP of the most developed Cyprus with 89.1% of the EU27 average, and the least developed Latvia with 43.5%. With its 73.5% of the EU 27 average, the Czech Republic was fourth after the mentioned Cyprus, Slovenia, and Malta. The Czech Republic was also fourth in comparison with the economic standard of the EU 15 in the calculation according to indexes. In the period after accession to the EU, the gap between the highest and lowest relative per capita GDP has been gradually closing. Countries in this group are converging towards the EU average as When the Czech Republic acceded to the EU in 2004, its GDP rose almost twice as rapidly as that of the old well as towards each other. PRICE LEVEL CONVERGENCE The comparative price level shows whether a country is "more expensive" or "cheaper" against the EU average (the ratio between the purchasing power parity and the market exchange rate calculated from the final consumption of households published by Eurostat). In 1995, the Czech Republic ranked among the cheapest countries in Europe (39.2% of the comparable price level of the EU15 and 41.5% in relation to EU 27), and still has a relatively lower comparative price level (60.7% of the EU 27 level in 2006), as do Slovakia (58.2%) and Hungary (60%). Although the Czech comparative price level has risen by 6.2 percentage points since 2003, it is still below the average of the ten new EU countries. Consumer prices have not been growing at a high rate in the Czech Republic and the movement was primarily due to the strengthening CZK/EUR exchange rate, which has been the main channel of convergence. Euro adoption at this time would eliminate the positive influence of the CZK exchange rate on convergence towards the developed countries. The same applies to the per capita GDP comparison of the whole group of new members from 2004 – their comparative price levels are approximating the average of the whole EU as well as each other at different speeds. Consumer prices have been growing slowly in the Czech Republic due to the strengthening CZK/EUR exchange rate NOTICEABLE GROWTH IN HOURLY WAGES... The average hourly costs of work (i.e. total Since the accession of the Czech 15. However, the nominal hourly wage is costs in EUR divided by the number of Republic to the EU, its average hourly fundamental, as it makes thus understood hours worked) are the basis which allows wage in EUR has been increasing most convergence greatly relative: whereas the comparison whether wages in a particular rapidly among the ten new EU countries – hourly wage in the EU 15 increased from country approximate the wage level of the it was up by 30.5% in 2006 against 2003 EUR 19.62 in 1997 to EUR 25.11 in 2005, old member countries and the average of after a growth from EUR 5.47 to EUR i.e. by EUR 5.49 (topical data of this group the whole Union. At the same time, the Czech Republic ranks first in the volume of medication collected at pharmacies, and fourth in the EU in the number of hospital stays. Instead of a trend towards reducing the number of days spent in hospital in favour of outpatient treatment, stays in medical facilities are growing longer.
