ROBINSON is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at The University ofTennessee. He was the president of the Oromo Studies Association EDITORIAL OVERVIEW This volume of the Journal of Oromo Studies deals with the complex issues of the Oromo problem, Contributors to the volume focus on the impacts of globalization and V,S, foreign policy on the Oromo national movement; the failure of US -sponsored Ethiopian "democracy" and the emergence of Tigrayan colonial dictatorship in a multinational empire; the status of Oromo nationalism in the era of the new global order and the necessity ofdesigning new tactics and strategies to achieve the Oromo national project; the issue of the siqqee institution of Oromo women and the possibility of reinventing this institution for achieving national liberation and gender equality; the problems of population and sustainable development in Oromia; the impacts ofcolonial development projects on environment and the colonized peoples in the Awash Valley; and the history of the Macha-Tulama Self-help Association and the importance ofthis associationfor the development ofOromo nationalism Contributors do a superb job of addressing the complex problems of the Oromo nation and forcing us to critically understand these problems and to find pragmatic solutions In "Global Capitalism and the Oromo Liberation Struggle: Theoretical Notes on US, Policy Towards the Ethiopian Empire," Sociologist William I Robinson explores the complex problem of the Oromo national movement in relation to the process of globalization and Ll.S: foreign policy, and why the Vnited States and other Western countries have chosen to support the emergence of Tigrayan colonial dictatorship under the guise of "democracy." He critically exposes the wrong assumptions by some scholars and activists on V, S, foreign policy towards peripheral countries in general and towards Oromia and Ethiopia in particular, and explains why the capitalist world order under the leadership of the V"S" does not promote agendas of authentic democratization, human rights, social justice and national liberation in Oromia and Ethiopia" He argues that the U.S. developed the new policy of "democracy promotion" for ideological legitimation of intervening and controlling political crises and transitions in peripheral countries to determine their outcomes for the interest of the capitalist world order and its collaborators at the cost of the snuggling and suffering populations.. Robinson demonstrates that the strategy of managing crises during transitions and the policy of "democracy promotion" are needed to maintain an unjust international systemthrough suppressingthe processes of popular snuggle and authentic democratization He asserts that the main reason why the U. S . manages and finances the current crises in the Ethiopian empire by backing the emerging authoritarian Tigrayan minority regime is to suppress the popular Oromo national snuggle and to intensify the exploitation and oppression of the Oromo majority Therefore, Robinson says, there is no surprise that the U.S assists Ethiopian colonialism and Tigrayan dictatorship at the cost of the Oromo majority and others since its intention is not to promote authentic democracy, social justice and freedom He suggests that although the U.S .. currently uses Tigrayan authoritarianism to suppress the popular Oromo national snuggle and democracy, at the same time it continues to search for establishing polyarchy or "elite democracy" in case the Oromo snuggle goes out of its control, Robinson argues that as the global capitalist world order led by the U. S. makes the national liberation snuggle of the Oromo complex and difficult, the Oromo popular snuggle has the potential to undermine the stability of this Older in Oromia and Ethiopia. O. Box 1176, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Accepted 17 September, 2013 This study attempts to contribute to our knowledge about Gamo, a member of the North Ometo subgroup, which is one of the four subgroups that constitute the Ometo group of the Omotic language family (Fleming, 1976; Bender, 2000). This paper characterizes some of the issues in the research of language and identity. It will attempt to employ the complementary perspectives of sameness and difference between Gamo, its sisters in the North Ometo sub-branch and its dialects. North Ometo comprises of several related languages and dialects of which Gamo is one. The exact relationship amongst the Ometo languages is not well known. Not equally well known is the relationship Gamo has with its sisters and daughters. The study tries to address issues concerning with misrepresentation of the Gamo language by the existing classification in one hand and what the self perception of the Gamo community likes on the other hand. This study aimed at examining linguistic facts and the Gamo speakers’ own understandings of their identities. To this end, the study has used linguistic, anthropological and sociolinguists attempt to characterize membership of Gamo based on linguistic facts and members’ self ethno-linguistic identificationi.

    MAYFEB Journal of Biology and Medicine Vol 1 (2017) - Pages 1-12 Diversity, Abundance and Distribution of Mammals in Fragmented Remnant Forests around Asella Town, Ethiopia Mohammed Kasso, Dire Dawa University, [email protected] Afework Bekele, Addis Ababa University, [email protected] Abstract- Survey on diversity, relative abundance, and distribution of mammals in fragmented remnant montane forest of Child Care Center and School of Agriculture was conducted from March to July 2013. Trapping, lines transect and indirect survey techniques were used. Information on abundance and species composition of matured trees was collected. Data were organized and analyzed using descriptive statistics. A total of 22 species of mammals belonging to five orders were recorded. From the trapped species of mammals, Stenocephalemys albipes was most abundant while Arvicanthis abyssinicus was least. From non-trapped groups of mammals, the most abundant was Colobus guereza whereas Leptailurus serval and Poecilogale albinucha were least recorded. Most of the species were widely distributed. However, Mus mahomet, Arvicanthis abyssinicus, Redunca redunca and Chlorocebus pygerythrus were recorded only from the School of Agriculture and in the same way Papio anubis was recorded from Child Care Center. The majority of the species (13) belonging to 108 individuals were recorded from thick canopy forest and nine species from grassland habitat. Plantation with secondary growth habitat was the most diversified habitat while grassland was the least. As the area is rich in mammal and other species, urgent conservation action is highly recommended. Keywords: Habitat fragmentation, mammal, montane forest, relative abundance, species composition. I. However, most of them still practice their traditional beliefs passed down through generations by their forefathers, such as Waaqeffannaa , and attend various rituals related to it . Waaqeffannaa is a religion based on belief in one God known to the Oromo as Waaqa , which according to the Oromo is the creator of the entire universe. The Oromo belief of the existence of Waaqa is based on observing what they call his works, such as the presence of various seasons, rain, sun, darkness, growing of crops, existence of water bodies, mountains, trees and other living things. Contrary to Christianity, Islam, and other religions, Waaqeffannaa does not require the construction of religious houses for the veneration of Waaqa or for thanking him for his good deeds. Instead, the Oromo who are followers of Waaqeffannaa thank Waaqa by travelling to natural physical bodies such as rivers, lakes, forests, and mountains, which they believe are created by Waaqa himself. Waaqeffannaa is believed to be a free will religion, where a believer does not need to calculate in order to obtain certain advantages, such as going to heaven in the afterlife for adhering to Waaqa . To the same effect, a believer would not face some kind of punishment for abandoning Waaqa .

    Sexual Violence and Justice in the Context of Legal Pluralism: Lessons from the Gamo Cultural Setting1 Getaneh Mehari2and Getent Tadele3 Abstract Although the pros and cons of legal pluralism have been widely debated in academic discourses its benefits and limitations in settling sexual violence cases have not been adequately explored. Focusing on the Gamo cultural context, this study explores the implications of legal pluralism for the rights of sexually abused women. Diverse methods, including in-depth-interview and informal conversation, were employed to gather data during the ethnographic fieldwork carried out in the Gamo highlands. The findings reveal that the justice institutions functioning in the study area are informed by customary laws, state laws and the human rights norms. The plural legal settings are characterized by dynamic, competitive, and confusing scenarios in which women’s quests for justice are not adequately addressed. State justice institutions and government-affiliated women’s rights advocates have provided abused women with alternative avenues to customary justice institutions. However, state institutions marginalize customary institutions from addressing criminal cases (including sexual violence cases) despite the fact that they lack the capacity to adequately address similar cases. As a result, abused women hardly get justice as they continuously move between the available options and eventually trapped in a grey area left by the competing justice institutions.
