A public exhibition for the city of Dallas

Untitled (airplane window), 2014, acrylic on aluminum, 48 X 48 inches

In conjunction with the Goss-Michael Foundation, the MTV:REDEFINE auction, Gagosian galleries and the artist, the Library is pleased to be one of the city’s public exhibit venues for the work of international art-star Michael Craig-Martin, who is the honoree of this year’s charity art auction to support Dallas Contemporary and MTV:STAYING ALIVE, which raises money to fight HIV and AIDS. Born in Ireland and raised in the US where he trained at Yale, the artist made his mark on the art world with his early after he had moved to , where he has been based since 1966, and where he taught for many years at Goldsmiths College, mentoring such major artists as , , , , , Julian Opie, and Richard Patterson. Even after moving into the realm of painting and sculpture, all of his works have dealt with the essential nature of objects. Craig-Martin has developed a visual vocabulary of recurring motifs of highly recognizable objects from everyday life and art and design history, and the images in the public exhibits are new templates that he designed with the Dallas exhibitions in mind; these specific paintings were selected specifically for the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library. He is represented by Alan Cristea and Gagosian galleries, has shown in numerous major exhibitions worldwide and his works are in the permanent collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Tate London, the Australian National Gallery in Canberra, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Books on the artist are available through the library, and the exhibition is free of charge and open daily through August 17, 2015 by the first floor auditorium.
