Cuatrecasas advises FC Barcelona on unlawful accounting claim

25 November 2010 | By James Swift

Spanish firm Cuatrecasas Gonçalves Pereira is advising FC Barcelona’s board of directors on its unlawful accounting claim against the club’s former president.

FC Barcelona president initiated the action against the club’s former president Joan Laporta – one of the most successful in the club’s history – accusing him of trying to hide the spending that occurred at the club during his reign.

Cuatrecasas partners Jorge Badia (litigation), Fernando Cerdá (Procedural law) and Barcelona office head Miguel Trías (corporate) are leading on the deal.

According to a spokesperson for the firm, Cuatrecasas, which has advised FC Barcelona on smaller cases before, landed the instruction after winning a tender.

An audit commissioned by Rosell revealed that during Laporta’s presidency, although revenues at the club grew from €297.3m in 2006-07 to €415.4m in 2009-10, expenditure grew even faster, from €283.6m to €486.9m over the same period, erasing the €11m profit reported by Laporta’s management for the 2009-10 season.

Laporta denies the claims and is believed to be counter-suing. He was chairman at Barcelona from 2003 to 2010, during which time the club won the Champion’s League twice and Spanish league four times.
