The 2009 Victorian Futures has been and gone, the C.P Maddern is well under way with Victoria making a fantastic start and in the next three weeks the biggest badminton event to hit our shores will be here - the 2009 Yonex Australian Open Grand Prix, with US $50,000 in prize money on offer to some of the worlds top players!!

It was a privilege and such a pleasure to see so many eager young faces at the opening of the C.P Mad- den Carnival, all ready and willing to take that next step into the Senior ranks of badminton. A big con- gratulation to Eaglehawk & Bendigo Badminton Association for a fantastic opening ceremony complete with Chinese Dancing Lions (yes, dancing lions! - ask the Victorian Team about it sometime). Best of luck to everyone for the Carnival.

VICTORIAN GRADED CHAMPIONSHIPS - By Val Nesbitt

Splendid performances and wonderful camaraderie cast a spell over the 2009 Victorian Graded Championships at MSAC on the weekend of 28/29 th June 2009.

This year saw a record number players compete in all draws, making for a hectic yet fiercely competitive event, with the C/D grade played on Saturday and A/B grade on Sunday. Apart from the distractions of graded players gravitat- ing to watch semi’s and finals of the Open Future Series Championship spectacular, (a minor handicap in responses to calls for their own matches), the Graded championships gave its’ regular association and university contestants an eclectic mix of performances, with several Victorian, Queensland and Tasmanian junior players taking the opportunity to be ‘match hardened’ at the championships before travelling on to Bendigo for the national CP Maddern Carnival the following week.

The Queenslanders were very successful taking out the A grade Women’s Singles, the B Grade Men’s Singles Winner and Runner up trophies, and were Runners up in the Women’s Doubles A grade and winners of the B Grade Women’s Doubles. Congratulations and good luck to a very well prepared team.

Not to be outdone, players from Monash, SEBA and WSBA gave all comers a run for their money in both AB and CD grades (please see the BV website for full results) . The general spirit of friendliness and great competitive determination is the hallmark of this event each year.

On behalf of the Championship Director Loke Poh Wong and the tournament team, we offer our congratulations to every competitor and wish them well for their badminton future.

2009 VICTORIAN STATE PENNANT

The 2009 Victorian State Pennant season concluded at the weekend with Monash Blues taking the honour over de- fending Champions BAV . With the loss of a number of BAV's key players to national squad training, it was still a closely fought final, with BAV coming genuinely close to winning.

Congratulations to all participating teams for their competitive spirit, good sportsmanship and determination to win.

The final placing from the 8 teams competitions are:

1st - Monash Blues 2nd - BAV 3rd - Southern Star 4th - Monash Gold 5th - JT Ultra 6th - WSBA 7th - Barwon Sports Academy 8th - Central BA

2009 EDE-CLENDINNEN SHIELD TEAM Monash Blues, 2009 State Pennant Team

After winning back the Shield from Western Australia in 2008, there is big expectations for this year’s competition in Hobart, Tas. We are certain our top-notch team is up to the task. Congratulations to the following players who will rep- resent Victoria in late August. 2009 Victorian Future Series

VICTORIAN FUTURE SERIES A ‘SWEEPING’ SUCCESS by Carolyn Beaumont

The Victorian Future Series was hosted by Badminton Victoria at MSAC this past weekend. With players travelling from Mexico, Indonesia, New Zealand and across Australia we knew that it was going to be an exciting competition.

Friday saw competition start around 12:30 with the Men’s Singles qualifying and first round. Running until about 9:00pm, the first few rounds of all events were underway and it was evident that the quality of play was excellent. The weekend was shaping up to be an exciting competition.

Quarter finals and semi finals started early Saturday morning with some exciting and close matches. In the Men’s Singles, Fernaldi Gideon of Indonesia knocked out some of the top seeds, to make the finals with number one seed, Joe Wu of New Zealand. McCarthy & Veeran managed to upset the Men’s Doubles number 1 seed of New Zealanders Dennerly-Minturn & Tam in only two matches late on Saturday. Austra- lian Leisha Cooper also triumphed over number one seed Deyanira Angulo of Mexico in the semi-final of the Ladies singles.

Sunday brought many spectators to the finals rounds as the Victorian Graded was also occurring simulta- neously. Many of the A & B grade players were distracted from their competition and took some time out to watch the exciting matches. Australia managed to win 4 of the 5 events, with Renuga Veeran taking the triple crown of Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles!

The morning started with Women’s Singles, Renuga triumphing over Leisha Cooper 21-15 and 21-13. Men’s Doubles followed with Australian duo Benjamin Walklate and Glenn Warfe beating Ben McCarthy & Raj Veeran, also from Australia 21-15 and 21-19. Renuga Veeran partnered with Australian Olympian Erin Car- roll to win the Women’s Doubles in an extremely close final against New Zealander’s Donna Haliday & Dan- ielle Barry (16-21, 21-19, 22-20). Men’s singles was the only event without an Aussie in the final, and as men- tioned above, Indonesian Gideon beat New Zealander Wu (17-21, 21-8, 21-15).

Finals wound down with the Mixed Doubles. Favourite brother-sister duo Raj & Renuga Veeran comfortably beat the Kiwi pair Haliday & Tam 21-12, 21-15.

Renuga also won the CM Wong trophy accompanied by $200 for best tournament performance. Thanks to Epsilon, who presents the trophy and cheque each year.

Players commented that it was a great opportunity to have an international competition on Australian soil as it eliminated many travel costs for our players and gave some newer elite players the opportunity to compete internationally while avoiding the time and monetary commitments that accompany tourna- ments held in Asia.

With an excellent turn-out and some very thrilling matches this past weekend, Badminton Victoria antici- pates even more excitement later this month when we jointly host the YONEX Australian Open Grand Prix with . Starting with the Pan Pacific U19 Teams Championship July 19-20 th , the week then leads into the U19 Australian Junior Championships (July 21 st -24 th ) and culminates with the YONEX Aus- tralian Open Grand Prix on July 22 nd – 26 th , 2009.

A very special thank you goes out to all umpires, court officials, line judges and volunteers. It was a long weekend, and your commitment and dedication to the tournament is certainly what made it such a suc- cess. Congratulations to all the participants this weekend! We look forward to seeing you in July.

MSAC SENIORS –Fun, fitness & friendship with badminton!

Now in its 9th year, the MSAC Over-50’s Seniors Group continues to grown in numbers with 16-20 attending every week. The sessions are run by a L1A coach, David Ginsbourg who provides some coaching as well as shuttles and racquets. The emphasis is very much on friendly social games and getting together for coffee afterwards, or lunch when someone celebrates a birthday.

Officially, the group only runs during school term , but the seniors are so keen they usually get to- gether during the holidays as well!

For more information contact David Ginsbourg on 9570 3536.

COACHING TIP

Coaching Developing Players during competition

Now that the game is scored per rally and the coach has the opportunity to have more input at the extra breaks it is important that we remember --- the game is still for the player.

Her are some hints for the coaches of young developing players.

1. Always give positive feedback only. 2. Keep it short and sweet one or two pieces of info only. 3. Your player is not yet consistent in stroke or footwork, so do not try to correct these today it is not a coaching session. 4. Remind them only about the tactical aspects that you have covered at training. 5. Build your players confidence praise them and let them see that you are satisfied with them. Above all develop their game and their initiative and not your own

JUNIOR BADMINTON

JUNIOR STATE PENNANT –by Julie MacDonald

From what started as my vision 9 months ago—to have junior players compete regularly in a team based competition—the VJB have now been able to organise and promote the first Victorian State Junior Pennant Competition.

State junior pennant for 2009 consists of 11 teams with approximately 90 players in two divisions of competition. Current teams consist of many top ranked state juniors from U/19 down to U/15.

The competition is aimed to provide players with an important pathway into team com- petition, and highlighting the great benefits of performing in a team environment.

Team matches consist of 4 mixed, 2 girls & 2 boys doubles, and 4 girls & 4 boys singles. This provides players with 16 quality matches each round.

The first four rounds of competition has been completed with all players performing at their best. Many matches have gone the full time distance, giving players full opportuni- ties to work on their game in a competitive environment. It was also great to see all coaches present for coaching assistance and team support. Feedback from all players and officials so far has been fantastic.

Results are published on the badminton Victoria web site, but the ladder after the 4 rounds, sees East Metro on top of both A and B grades.

What is so good to see is the support of both the players and the regions in making this a premier event on the junior calendar. I would also like to note the fantastic effort by the South East Metro region fielding 4 teams into the competition, showing their strong inter- est in an event like this.

Our aim is for all remaining regions come on board next year for a bigger and better competition in 2010.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Val Nesbit for all her hard work and to the people who attended our initial open forums in 2008 to get this competition off the ground.

Let’s continue to promote the benefits to our young players that badminton can be a fun, competitive and rewarding team sport!
