Chris Christophersen and Anna Christie Featured At FALL 2013 NEWSLETTER FALL 2013 C HRIS C HRISTOPHERSEN AND A NNA C HRISTIE FEATURED TH AT 14 A NNUAL E UGENE O’N EILL F ESTIVAL It isn’t often that an audience has a chance to get a handle on how a playwright develops his ideas and his plays. This year’s Eugene O’Neill Festival will provide this unique opportunity. Double-barreled productions of two of Eugene O’Neill’s most matched plays – the well-known Anne Christie and the seldom produced Chris Christophersen – will be the centerpieces of the 14th Annual Eugene O’Neill Festival. The two productions offer a rare face-off between his plays. Written in 1920, Chris Christophersen has the vagaries of a romantic sensationalized 19th century melodrama, while Anna Christie, rewritten and retitled one year later emerges as a 20th century psychological drama. The re-work paid off for O’Neill, because Anna Christie landed the author his second Pulitzer Prize in 1922. Anna Christie, produced by Role Players Ensemble, opens on September 6 with performances continuing through September 21 at the Village Theatre in downtown Danville. Chris Christophersen has its run for four performances September 26 - 29 in the Old Barn at Tao House, part of the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site in the Danville hills. Performances on Thursday thru Saturday begin at 8:00 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Eden Neuendorf, John Hale, and Josh Schell in a scene from Chris Christophersen. To make this year’s Festival productions even more attractive, both plays will be performed by a single company of actors (see page 5).     Biography of Eugene O’Neill Trevor M. Wise Eugene Gladstone O’Neill was born on October 16, 1888, at the Barrett hotel in New York city, New York, son of James o’Neill, a well-known matinee idol, and Mary Ellen (Ella) Quinlan. Much of O’Neill’s youth was spent in the wings of the theater as he toured the country with his parents and older brother Jamie, watching his father perform his most famous role—the Count of Monte Cristo. When not touring the country with his family, O’Neill attended Catholic boarding school at St. Aloysius Academy at Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx borough of New York. he then spent four years at Betts Academy, a non-sectarian prep school in Stamford, Connecticut. O’Neill spent the summers with his family at the Monte Cristo Cottage in New London, Connecticut, the only permanent home O’Neill knew as a child. in 1903, at the age of fifteen, o’Neill became aware of his mother’s morphine addiction and was introduced to alcohol by his brother Jamie, setting him on a path of heavy drinking and alcohol abuse. in the fall of 1906, o’Neill enrolled in princeton University, only to be expelled in the following spring for his poor academic per- formance. in october 1909, o’Neill secretly married Kathleen Jenkins, his first of three wives. Shortly after the wedding, o’Neill set sail for honduras to prospect for gold, but found none. While abroad, O’Neill lived the life of a waterfront derelict, working odd jobs and drinking heavily, until he contracted malaria and was forced to return to the United States.

Currently there is a large gap in scholarly literature about Broadway with only three quantitative studies having been performed. This thesis aims to help fill this gap by building off of these three studies to determine which factors influence the success- measured as total days on Broadway from opening to closing night- of a Broadway musical. This thesis focuses specifically on musicals as they have been shown in all three empirical studies to have longer runs and a larger economic impact than Broadway plays. The econometric analysis finds many variables- such as a movie version of the musical being released, and winning the Tony for Best Musical- that are predictive of loner run times. Revivals are found to have substantially shorter run times than original runs and over time, musicals are lasting longer.
