Health and Nutrition Research Pistachios can help individuals maintain good health, support an active lifestyle and reduce the risk of nutrition-related diseases. Research studies suggest that pistachios have numerous health benefits, including being a source of health-boosting antioxidants and other important nutrients, lowering the risk of heart disease, supporting weight management and a healthy diet, creating a lower-than-expected blood-sugar level and helping with insulin sensitivity. Subjects who ate more than three servings of nuts (such as pistachios) per week had a 39% lower mortality risk. The PREDIMED Study. Guasch-Ferré, et al. BMC medicine 2013Jul16; 11:164 AmericanPistachios.org Pistachios and Mortality Many large population studies have found an inverse association between nut intake and total mortality. Recently published in the British Journal of Nutrition, nut intake was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in a large prospective study of 19,386 participants. As compared with subjects who did not eat nuts, those who consumed nuts more than 8 times per month showed a 47% lower risk of dying from any cause.1 Similar results have been found in studies from populations around the world.2 An analysis of studies for all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, with a total of 354,933 participants, nut consumption was associated with significant protection. One-serving of nuts per day resulted in 27% lower risk from dying from any cause including CVD and cancer.3 In another systematic review and analysis of large, well-designed prospective population studies in Europe and North America showed that nut consumption is inversely associated with all-cause mortality, total CVD mortality, coronary heart disease mortality and sudden cardia death.

  • Tree Nut Allergy
Allergy and Immunology Tree Nut Allergy The term tree nuts refers to nuts other than peanut and includes - cashew, walnut, almond, pecan, pistachio, brazil nut, hazelnut and macadamia. These nuts contain protein that can cause an allergic reaction for around 2% of children. The type and severity of reactions to tree nuts can vary together with peanut, tree nuts are the most common foods to cause anaphylaxis in Australia, particularly cashews. Most people allergic to one tree nut do not have allergies to any other nuts but approximately 30% will have another tree nut allergy. Common coexisting tree nut allergies are cashew-pistachio and walnut-pecan. Your doctor will tell you which nuts you should avoid based on allergy testing, your child’s age and severity of past reactions. Will my child grow out of their tree nut allergy? Around 10% of children with an allergy to any of the tree nuts may outgrow one or all of their allergies. The doctors will determine whether your child has outgrown any of the tree nut allergies by a combination of allergy testing and food challenge. Allergy testing may be periodically repeated to monitor your child’s allergies. Challenges should only be performed by experienced medical staff with emergency resuscitation medications and facilities available. Once your child is safely eating certain nuts it is advisable to continue to include them as a regular part of your child’s diet. For younger children or those that do not like to eat nuts this can be done in a ground form added to other foods such as cereal, baked goods or yoghurt.

Food Induced Anaphylaxis: Causes, Risk Factors and Clinical Management Syed Rahman1, Imran Pasha2, Farhan Chughtai1, Adnan Khaliq1, Tariq Mehmood1, Atif Liaqat1, and Samreen Ahsan1 1Khwaja Farid University of Engineering and Information Technology 2University of Agriculture Faisalabad November 3, 2020 Abstract Abstract Globally, food consumption patterns are becoming more sophisticated and diversified for meeting abrupt increase in projections of food demands. The stance of availability of allergens hazard free food is a rather hectic task to implement and consumers most probably become prone to them. There is no phenomenon for investigating or identifying presence of allergens in food sample by visual inspection. So, majority of individuals possessing food intolerance have confronted with anaphylactic symptoms. Anaphylaxis is an attention attenuating concern because of its increasing invasion in different residential zones of the world. The degree of morbidity and mortality of food allergy were underestimated since a long period of times by its victims and consultant medical staff. With the passage of time the sustainability and resistance of immune regulatory responses of human being become infirm. Hence, as a result of that immune regulatory impairments human susceptible start being prone to severe anaphylactic symptoms such as shortness of breath, swelling of throat and tongue, low blood pressure, vomiting, itchy rash and tingling of nose. The causal agents for provoking anaphylaxis are mast cells and basophils. There are more or less ten prominent foods which trigger anaphylaxis after their ingestion. Hence, avoidance from being in confront with allergen food can limit proliferation of anaphylaxis. Introduction Food allergy is a major concern for millions of worldwide communities due to its severe health related consequences.

  • In Everything, Therefore, Treat Others in the Same Way You Want Them to Treat You.” Matthew 7:12
Dear Parents, You’ve all read the headlines and seen the news stories: food allergies are a growing concern in schools. Millions of children - children who are perfectly healthy and normal in every other way – must watch every single bite they eat, or risk suffering a severe or even life threatening reaction. In fact, food allergies are responsible for over 30,000 emergency room visits each year. A major health issue such as this one needs to be taken very seriously, and it has always been the policy of King’s Gate programs to make the safety and well being of children a top priority. Several students in our programs have a serious peanut and/or tree nut allergy - the food allergy that claims more lives each year than any other. A child with a serious peanut allergy can suffer a reaction merely by touching a peanut-containing food. So, we are asking that you, as a compassionate and empathetic endeavor, help us make our programs more allergy friendly in these ways: • Please do not send any peanuts, peanut butter or foods containing peanuts, peanut butter or nuts to be eaten as snacks or with lunch in the classroom. We understand that providing allergy friendly lunches may be out of the norm for many of you, but as you can see on the attached list, there are many allergy friendly options. ☺ • We will not be doing any classroom projects/activities that involve nuts, peanuts, peanut butter or peanut shells. Please do not send any of these projects into the classroom with your child.

Nuts have a rich history as food. For many indigenous peoples of the Americas, a wide variety of nuts, includ- ing acorns, American beech, and others, served as a ma- jor source of starch and fat over thousands of years.[5] Similarly, a wide variety of nuts have served as food for Indigenous Australians for many centuries.[6] Other culinary nuts, though known from ancient times, have seen dramatic increases in use in modern times. The most striking such example is the peanut. Its usage was popularized by the work of George Washington Carver, A small bowl of mixed nuts who discovered and popularized many applications of the peanut after employing peanut plants for soil ameliora- tion in fields used to grow cotton.[7] 1 True nuts A typical assortment of mixed nuts Culinary nuts are dry, edible fruits or seeds that usually, but not always, have a high fat content.
