Enterprise data warehouse with faster time-to-value DWFT for SQL Server 2014 offerings are methodically tested and tuned to save months of configuration, setup, testing, and tuning. With this offering from Lenovo and IBM, the following tasks can now be completed.

 Buy only the hardware listed, including servers, storage, and networking.  Build, tune, and deploy with confidence by using established data warehouse best practices. Select from different levels of performance, scalability, and price to suit business needs.  Choose from 4 to 120 Intel® Xeon® processor cores. Run targeted query workloads that are patterned for large sequential data sets rather than small random transactions.  Eliminate bottlenecks with optimized rapid data reads and query aggregations.

Better data compression and query times The clustered columnstore index in SQL Server 2014 is designed for use with data warehouses to deliver better data compression and sub-second query response time, which enables interactive analytics on the data. There is no need to pre-aggregate the data for the anticipated queries or reports.

Clustered columnstore index offers the following performance benefits:  Clustered columnstore index is optimized for query performance. It gives 10 times better query response time and 7 times higher compression ratio.

3

IBM Systems Technical White Paper July 2016

 Clustered columnstore index can be updated, which allows two types of concurrent insert actions of new data while the query workload is running. This capability reduces the data latency from the time data is born and until it is available for querying.  By using clustered columnstore index, SQL Server 2014 delivers industry-leading TPC-H benchmark numbers for data warehouse workloads.

Powered by IBM, Lenovo, Emulex, and Brocade

This DWFT configuration for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 features two System x3650 M5 servers connected to an IBM FlashSystem V9000 (SAN) with Emulex FC HBAs through two Brocade SAN 24B-5 16Gb Fibre Channel switches to create a highly available solution that improves productivity through data consolidation, availability, performance, and scalability.

Figure 2: Brocade 16Gb Fibre Channel switch

The Emulex Gen 5 HBAs meet the high I/O requirements of flash storage arrays and large data warehouse workloads, delivering 1.2 million input/output operations per second (IOPS) on a single port. These HBAs also maximize the performance of flash-based systems by prioritizing mission-critical traffic in congested networks with the exclusive ExpressLane feature.
