After a slow start to the season, Port fought th back to finish the minor round in 4 place, then defeated Kensington, West Torrens and ultimately Goodwood, each in two games, to retain the title. Mention must be made of the heroic efforts of Darren Fidge, of Goodwood, who provided outstanding pitching outings, combined with his offensive efforts, to propel Goodwood to the Grand Final. Port Adelaide import, Ryan Murphy, was the very deserving winner of the trophy for the most valuable player in the final series. The Capps Medal winner this year was East Torrens import Tyler Levin, who won by 4 votes from Ben Wigmore of Good- wood. The presentation was conducted, once again, at AAMI Stadium and, again, Dr. Roger Capps was able to delay his departure for interstate to enable him to present the medal personally. The successful evening incorporated the presenta- tion of Life Membership of Baseball SA to Norm “Chalky” White, recognition of the SA Claxton Shield All-Star Team and the an- nouncement of the Baseball SA All Star Team.. In addition, med- al winners in all senior grades were announced, West Torrens were presented with the Junior and Senior Club shields and Vicky Tate & Ken Wesslink Division 1 significant award winners were presented. I congratulate all of the above for their achievements. • 75th Claxton Shield Diamond All Star Team Manager Kingsley Wellington First Base Kevin Greatrex Second Base David Mundy Short Stop Dave Roberts Utility Andrew Scott Pitchers: Charlie Puckett Ron Sharpe Neil Page Shayne Bennett I continue to be supported by a hard working Board and The Baseball Australia Diamond Awards were held on Saturday, Baseball SA office staff, and thank them for their efforts this 21 February 2009 at Rydges on Swanston in Melbourne. past year. Flintoff & Dunn’s AUSTRALIAN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - 2010 CLAXTON 2010 IN REVIEW! - By Peter Flintoff Section 1 VICTORIA EMERGES TO WIN 22ND CLAXTON SHIELD - LAST OF THIS FORMAT? Under assurance that Australia’s new National Baseball League would definitely commence at the end of 2010, this 2009/10 Claxton Shield was proclaimed to be the last of its kind. Similar to the previous competition, this program was designed to be as close as possible to what the National League might bring as a kind of “forerunner” to the new competition. As another progressive upgrade from the previous year, each of the five major state teams were scheduled to play two three-game weekend series against each other state on a “home & away” basis. The schedule comprised more games than the previous season with the abandonment of the “Showcase Round” from the 2008/09 competition. Standard programming was for a Friday night game plus a Saturday afternoon/night double- header, however, separate games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights were scheduled for Perth as a variation to this. Rained-out and/or postponed games were re-scheduled to be added to weekend programs for the return series between the same teams. At the conclusion of the 24 preliminary games played by each team the top placed team on the table was automatically qualified to host the best-of-three Grand Final series. The second placed team would host the third placed team in a best-of-three semi-final series for the right to play in the Grand Final. This Claxton Shield review is not intended to

  • Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • Triple Plays Analysis
    A Second Look At The Triple Plays By Chuck Rosciam This analysis updates my original paper published on SABR.org and Retrosheet.org and my Triple Plays sub-website at SABR. The origin of the extensive triple play database1 from which this analysis stems is the SABR Triple Play Project co-chaired by myself and Frank Hamilton with the assistance of dozens of SABR researchers2. Using the original triple play database and updating/validating each play, I used event files and box scores from Retrosheet3 to build a current database containing all of the recorded plays in which three outs were made (1876-2019). In this updated data set 719 triple plays (TP) were identified. [See complete list/table elsewhere on Retrosheet.org under FEATURES and then under NOTEWORTHY EVENTS]. The 719 triple plays covered one-hundred-forty-four seasons. 1890 was the Year of the Triple Play that saw nineteen of them turned. There were none in 1961 and in 1974. On average the number of TP’s is 4.9 per year. The number of TP’s each year were: Total Triple Plays Each Year (all Leagues) Ye a r T P's Ye a r T P's Ye a r T P's Ye a r T P's Ye a r T P's Ye a r T P's <1876 1900 1 1925 7 1950 5 1975 1 2000 5 1876 3 1901 8 1926 9 1951 4 1976 3 2001 2 1877 3 1902 6 1927 9 1952 3 1977 6 2002 6 1878 2 1903 7 1928 2 1953 5 1978 6 2003 2 1879 2 1904 1 1929 11 1954 5 1979 11 2004 3 1880 4 1905 8 1930 7 1955 7 1980 5 2005 1 1881 3 1906 4 1931 8 1956 2 1981 5 2006 5 1882 10 1907 3 1932 3 1957 4 1982 4 2007 4 1883 2 1908 7 1933 2 1958 4 1983 5 2008 2 1884 10 1909 4 1934 5 1959 2

  • The History of School Baseball in Australia
The History of School Baseball in Australia Baseball has been played in schools since the early 1900s. In New South Wales the longest running School Knockout happens to be in the sport of Baseball, the Proud Shield competition as it is known, began in 1908, and was won by Fort Street High. The sport is presently played in over 500 Secondary Schools around Australia. At the interstate level, competitions have existed since the 1940's, with some evidence suggesting competitions in the 1930's. These competitions involved New South Wales and Queensland teams with spasmodic representation from South Australia and Victoria. Throughout the 1970's and early 1980's only New South Wales and Queensland teams competed, until 1987 when Australian Capital Territory played in a three way Championship. Michael Chapman, the New South Wales Combined High Schools Baseball Convener, worked tirelessly throughout this time to have other States participate and for Baseball to come under the umbrella of the Australian Schools Sports Council. In 1988, Michael was elected the first National Secretary of the Australian Secondary School Baseball Association under the banner of the Australian Schools Sports Council. The Championship of 1988, held in Canberra, had four teams - New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. It was a trial Championship before the full acceptance into the Australian Schools Sports Council. The venue for the inaugural Australian Secondary Schools Baseball Championship was Oriole Stadium, Sydney in 1989 where Victoria also competed for the first time. This year sees us playing our 21 st Championship. With the greater interest in the community, baseball standards have improved in schools.
