Year 7 Music assignment By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Year 7 students have had a lot of fun with their Music Assignment this term. They had to design and build a musical instrument made from recycled materials that contained a minimum of three sound sources.

Part of the task was to also produce a Design Portfolio with all the info relating to the design, building and any modifications of the instrument. Well done Year 7!

Debating/COWS

Premier’s Debating Challenge By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Head Teacher English, Mrs Wallace along with her team are really building the interest and appreciation for debating. Our students have entered many competitions this year and were rewarded recently with a trip to Sydney with Ms Sheriff to watch the final of the Year 9 & 10 NSW Premier’s Debating Challenge, between Merewether HS (MHS) and Sydney Girls HS (SGHS).

The topic was, “Citizens should get to vote directly on important social changes alongside Federal elections,” with MHS in the affirmative and SGH in the negative. Sydney Girls High for the negative won the challenge. Congratulations to all the participants.

More fascinating was the fact that our students and many from schools around NSW including; Batlow Tech HS, Toormina HS, West Wyalong HS, Denison College Bathurst, Ardlethan CS and Lewisham Arts College were able to watch the debate LIVE via video conferencing from school classrooms and have the ability to ask questions, send feedback and vote on the winner.

Earlier, a very experienced and renowned adjudicator, Paula Bennett held a debating workshop at school with students who have expressed an interest in debating.

The Premier's Debating Challenge is open to all NSW government schools, with the aim of developing the public speaking and reasoning skills of students from Years 5 to 12.

Thank you to Ms Ping for her assistance on the day.

Celebration of Words By Miss H Sheriff English Faculty

It takes commitment to give up one’s Friday night, but that’s exactly what Bianca Farley, Robert Lewis and Jessie Dennett showed when they represented our school at the COWS Public Speaking evening on November 11.

Competing against St Phillips and Hunter River HS, Bianca, our team captain drew the ping pong which meant our team started off the evening’s proceedings. Students each spoke for 2 ½ minutes on their chosen topics:

 Jessie Dennett: The“ Smartphone is the symbol of our generation.”  Bianca: “There is no right way to do the wrong thing.”  Bob: “Social media - a force for good .”

The students spoke exceptionally well and Ted Arneson, from the Raymond Terrace Writers Group and Lions Club had nothing but high praise, “Many thanks to everyone for last night’s event. It went fantastically well. The judges had a hard job, I'm certain, to pick St. Phillip’s as the winning school.”

This annual event is held every year and run by the Raymond Terrace Writer’s Group, Raymond Terrace Lions Club and Port Stephens Council. Congratulations to St Phillips HS and to Bianca, Bob and Jessie on their fantastic effort! Well done!

(Our 2016 public speaking team was coached by Ms Sheriff and past winners, Luke Keating & Brayden Milford of Year 12).

Well done to our English department and particularly, our very talented students.

Volunteers luncheon By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Irrawang High School highly values and appreciates all the volunteers who come into our school to assist our students - in many different ways.

Recently, Principal Mr Baxter welcomed volunteers from our Canteen, P&C, Plan-it-Youth and the Breakfast Club to a thank you three course luncheon prepared by Chef and TAS teacher, Mr Chris Enright and his Year 12 Hospitality students, along with assistance from Tash Alexander and Mrs Noone. To say the restaurant quality food was amazing is an understatement. Students had been preparing all morning for this function which will count towards their Cert II in Hospitality.

Plan-it-Youth volunteer, Jan Noake also thanked Mr Enright and the students for such a beautiful meal which was followed by freshly brewed coffees and boutique teas.

This event is in its 10th year and is organised by the Western Sydney Social Science Teachers Association as a fun way to engage the top Year 8 Geography students in the region. IHS was one of 12 schools who participated. The students performed well and were excellent ambassadors for the school. Year 6 Visit Lemon Car Project

Year 6 students visit their new school By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

A very warm Irrawang High welcome recently to families and students from our partner primary schools who will be starting school here next year in 7E.

Students were welcomed by Principal Mr Baxter, Year 7 Deputy Principal Mr O’Brien, the 2017 Year 7 Advisor Mr Hurley and Transition Co-ordinator Ms Robinson.

Our Gifted and Talented Students (GATS) Co-ordinator, Ms Wotton along with students Caitlin, Grace and Tim spoke with confidence about the incredible opportunities available in all faculties and other programs available outside the normal curriculum.

It was then straight to class for the students – the first with Maths teacher Ms Burgess for a fun "Maths Relay" exercise with students working in groups, then onto Science and English. Hope you had a fun day students and look forward to seeing you next year!

World of Work

World of Work Program By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

All Year 10 students had the opportunity recently to participate in the World Of Work (WOW) Program held at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

This is a school to work transition program covering such topics including: first impressions, table etiquette, communication, team building, body language, goal setting and personal grooming.

Each day, six community/business guests were invited to eat with the students where they could "practice" what they had learnt throughout the morning.

Students were also asked to complete a feedback form and to date the feedback both from students and community members has been outstanding.

An invaluable program for our students!

Asia Wise Challenge

Adidas Colour Fun Run

Asia Wise By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Geography teachers, Ms Donnelly and Ms Connor are currently engaging Year 10 geography students with the "Asia Wise" Program. The goal of the program is to create an Asian literate Australia, by raising the level of knowledge and understanding of Asia.

The students are encouraged to be part of a global community with smart programs, resources and engaging activities that develop their understanding of the history, geography and cultures of Asia.

Adidas Colour Fun Run By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

The highly anticipated Adidas Colour Fun Run was held recently with over 100 students participating and raising almost $2500 for house flags for sports carnivals.

Chief organiser, Mr Hurley was thrilled with the turnout of students who had an absolute, albeit messy great few hours, which included a BBQ lunch.

Big thanks to all the helpers, including student Brayden Milford and St Johns Ambulance assistant, Michael who was on standby.

Year 12 Fundraiser

Year 12 Hospitality fundraiser By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

It rarely happens, so when hot chips and aioli, frappes and slushies are prepared and served by our Year 12 hospitality students as a fundraiser its a very welcome event.

The students and their teacher, Mr Enright are raising funds to subsidise a Barista course the students are undertaking in the next few weeks as part of their Cert 11 course.

Well done everyone and hope your fundraiser was successful.

Annual art show By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Wow - another great opportunity for our senior students to showcase their talents to the wider community, with the opening last week of the Irrawang High School Annual Art Show.

An understandably proud art teacher, Mr Grant Wyllie opened the exhibition of many mediums, which runs through until mid January at the Art Space at Raymond Terrace Library.

Please make the effort to visit the exhibition which also features art works from Hunter River High students - there are many well- known and recognisable students amongst the pieces.

Does your child need an extra hand with English or Maths?

Sometimes children fall behind at school. They may have moved from another state, changed classes, or something else has happened in their life beyond your control. For whatever reason they then begin to struggle with their work at school, with their homework and with their exams. This can be frustrating for both them and you as a parent.

Kip McGrath specialises in helping children catch up to where they need to be in English and Maths. The resources we use are specifically designed to do this job. And the reason we only use qualified teachers, is that they have the tools and skills to accelerate your child’s learning, so that any gaps are closed as quickly as possible.

We complement what is done at school to help your child. Your school gives your child an essential foundation in education across a wide range of subjects and developmental activities. Our job is to give your child an extra hand when they need to catch up … for whatever reason. So together we can help your child reach their full potential.

If your child is experiencing these frustrations and they need an extra hand in English or Maths, then call Christine to see how we can help. 4983 1000 www.kipmcgrath.com.au/raymond-terrace
