Zimbabwe crisis a wake-up call for SADC - HH By Mirriam Chabala UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says the current political situation in Zimbabwe is a wake-up call for SADC which has for a long time adopted a laissez- faire attitude in dealing with crises. And HH has wondered what SADC chair President Jacob Zuma meant by saying ‘we are keenly watching the situation in Zimbabwe’ when it had been degenerating for the past 15 years. • Are the Black Lions of Ethiopia Y to Maul Zambia?
The Horn Times Sport, 20 January 2013 Match build up; are the black lions of Ethiopia ready to maul Zambia? (By Getahune Bekele, Nelspruit - South Africa.) Despite the annoying mannerism of Ethiopian Football Association boss and top TPLF cadre Sahilu Gebremariam who prevented the players from meeting their passionate fans at the Oliver Tambo air port in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon, the colorful country men and women are streaming to the city of Nelspruit for Monday’s crunch battle against Zambia. Will classy goal poacher Saladin said, leader of the pride Degu Debebe, power house Yared Zenabu and the inspirational Adane Girma catapult Ethiopia, the 1957 runners up and the 1962 winners to glory? Although it is unfair to compare the current crop of players to the 1962 intrepid soldiers of the lion of Judah, they do have what it takes to bring back the glory days of yester year soccer. We are told that the free kick specialist of the black lions who can bend it like David Beckham is defender Abebaw Butako with Saladin deputizing to take those around the 18 yard area. Fuad Ibrahim of Minnesota stars in the US is aiming high to share the goal scoring responsibility with Saladin. Dangerous crosses expected to come from the man known for his electrifying pace, Yusuf Saleh of Syrianska club in Sweden. Our goal keeper, the proven shot stopper Sisaye Bancha will be well protected by the likes of Biadgelegn Elias, Aynalem Hailu, Asrat Megersa, Alula Girma and co while the acrobatic coffee goal minder Jemal Tassew waits on the wings to grab his chance if Bancha fails to stay switched on for the crucial 90 minutes against the Zambians.

  • Beautiful Soccer by the Beautiful Ethiopians!
The Horn Times Sport, 21 January 2013 Beautiful soccer by the most beautiful Ethiopians! (By Getahune Bekele, at Mbombela stadium - South Africa) ETHIOPIA 1-1 Zambia. “Who said Africa cannot play like Barcelona? This Ethiopian team is Africa’s Barcelona.” Sunday Olisey, Nigerian foot ball legend. “Today Ethiopians have showed the world that African foot ball is on the rise” Mark Fish, South African foot ball legend. “Today I witnessed minnows turning giant killers” President of Nigerian football association. Today I realize why an Irish Historian Deborah Murphy once described my beloved Ethiopia as the land of beautiful women and handsome men. Not just the sheer artistry on the field of play that mesmerized Africa and the world, it was the beauty of the girls and the glamour that followed Ethiopians wherever they go that bewilderd humanity on this historic day. Am as astounded as everybody else by the tactical and technical discipline of the black lions that attacked the mighty Zambians like angry swarm of bees. The goal scored today by the nifty Adane Girma on the 64 th minute is our first goal at African cup of nations since March 1976. And it is done in the most dramatic way. Africa’s lowest ranking team at this tournament, Ethiopia, butchering the defending champions, Zambia. Furthermore, the entire soccer analysts at super sport channel 4 were unanimous when they select the Ethiopia vs. Zambia game as the best since the 29 th edition began on Friday. The game started very badly for the black lions when on the 16 th minute star striker Saladine Said missed a golden chance to put Ethiopia ahead.

  • Iv ABSTRACT Research Conducted in Zambia Have Revealed That Literacy
ABSTRACT Research conducted in Zambia have revealed that literacy levels of Zambian learners are below the expected grade level. The Zambian Government has made huge financial investments in introducing the Primary Reading Programme (PRP), which emphasized the use of a familiar, indigenous language to teach basic literacy skills from grades one to three. However, research conducted nationwide after the introduction of PRP indicated that the proportion of learners achieving even the minimal expected standard of literacy by Grades 5 and 6 remains extremely low. Teachers play an important role in mediating the learning opportunities. The current study sought to investigate beliefs and practices of first grade teachers and the degree to which they influence learners’ mastery of initial literacy skills in Lusaka district. The study further sought to determine if and how a literacy tool, GraphoGame, could interact with teacher variables to improve learners’ literacy skills. Data for the current research was collected as part of a larger research project called the Reading Support for Zambian Children (RESUZ). At the core of the study was an intervention with GraphoGame. Intervention groups were formed for learners, teachers and a combination of both. The current study used both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. The sample consisted of first grade teachers from Zambian Government schools (N = 63) age range 25-54 and their learners (N = 288) age range 6-9 years. Data on teachers’ self-reported teaching practices and attitudes about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, learner versus teacher centred approaches, personal theories of teaching and views about the curriculum was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire.

  • Zambia 2015 Human Rights Report
ZAMBIA 2015 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Zambia is a constitutional republic governed by a democratically elected president and a unicameral national assembly. In October 2014 then president Sata died in office. On January 20, voters elected Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Edgar Lungu president in a by-election. International and local observers considered the election to have been conducted freely and cited few irregularities. Although the results were credible, however, media coverage, police presence, and legal restrictions heavily favored the ruling party and prevented the election from being genuinely fair. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the security forces. The most significant human rights problems during the year were abuses by police, including reports of unlawful killings, torture, and beatings; political violence; restrictions on freedom of the press, assembly, association, and speech; and gender-based violence (GBV). Other serious human rights problems included life-threatening prison conditions; arbitrary arrest; prolonged pretrial detention; arbitrary interference with privacy; displacement of landowners; government corruption; child abuse; trafficking in persons; discrimination against persons with disabilities and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) community; and child labor. The government took selective and halting steps to prosecute or punish officials who committed abuses, targeting mostly those who opposed the ruling party. Impunity remained a problem, as ruling party supporters were either not prosecuted for serious crimes or, if prosecuted, released after serving small fractions of prison sentences. Section 1. Respect for the Integrity of the Person, Including Freedom from: a. Arbitrary or Unlawful Deprivation of Life There were several reports the government or its agents committed arbitrary or unlawful killings.

  • St-Georges Platinum Enters Into an Agreement to Acquire Copper-Cobalt-Nickel Projects in the Zambian Copper Belt
ST-GEORGES PLATINUM ENTERS INTO AN AGREEMENT TO ACQUIRE COPPER-COBALT-NICKEL PROJECTS IN THE ZAMBIAN COPPER BELT Montreal, Quebec, February 5th, 2014 – St-Georges Platinum & Base Metals ltd (OTCQX: SXOOF) (CSE: SX) is pleased to announce that it has entered into a binding agreement to acquire 100% of two mineral mining projects in the Kasempa and Mwinilunga Districts in Western Zambia. Shongwa Project (Kasempa District) The Shongwa IOCG & Nickel project is located in Northwestern Zambia. The project area lies approximately 60km northwest of the town of Kasempa in northwest Zambia. The area is poorly developed with only minor trails away from the gravel Kasempa-Kaoma road link. The area consists of forested and relatively flat covered plains with some rolling hills and some permanent watercourses. Minor areas of habitation and subsistence farming exist to the south of Shongwa. The Large Scale Prospecting License (LPL) 14817-HQ-LPL covers an area of 726 square km. It was recently converted into 3 mining licenses covering the same total territory. The Shongwa project is the site of one of the oldest known deposits in Zambia dating back to the fourth century. Since the rediscovery of these ancient workings in 1899, the area has been mined intermittently for the recovery of high-grade copper ore. From 1903 until 1914, copper was recovered by underground mining of high-grade veins, followed by hand sorting and direct smelting. Mining activities terminated with the onset of World War 1. In 1952 further exploration and mine development commenced, with minimum production in 1956. Sulphide concentrate was also produced onsite from rich vein ore from lower mine levels utilizing a small concentrator.

  • The Role of Intra-Party Primary Elections in Zambia’S Democracy: Lessons from Zambezi West Constituency
Isagoge, v. 1, n. 2, p. 38-62, junho, 2021, ISSN 2763-7123 Rio de Janeiro, Brasil THE ROLE OF INTRA-PARTY PRIMARY ELECTIONS IN ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRACY: LESSONS FROM ZAMBEZI WEST CONSTITUENCY O PAPEL DAS ELEIÇÕES PRIMÁRIAS INTRAPARTIDÁRIAS NA DEMOCRACIA DA ZÂMBIA: LIÇÕES DO CÍRCULO ELEITORAL ZAMBEZI OCIDENTAL Kenneth Kapalu Muzata Department of Educational Psychology, Sociology and Special Education, University of Zambia, Zambia [email protected] Received: 08/07/21 Accepted: 09/07/21 Published: 11/07/21 Abstract: Elections are one sure way people at the grassroots express their choice of who should lead them and discard those they feel do not serve them well. However, elections lose their meaning once a few individuals in the name of political party representatives usurp the power of the people to elect credible leaders. This was a qualitative study conducted to describe the factors that affect the credibility of primary elections using one case of Zambezi West Constituency. Participant observation was a method of collecting data from eleven key informants. An observation and interview guide were used to collect data. Data was recorded on Mp3 sonny recorder, iphone camera and notebooks. Transcriptions were done and themes identified during analysis. Findings show that generally the primary elections did not reflect the will of the people as the final outcomes were affected by natural and artificial factors. Most importantly, the elections were characterised by lack of transparency, fathergodrism, corruption, lack of planning for different terrains and vested interests by party officials in preferred candidates. It is recommended that community party members should be the ones allowed to vote for their candidates and not party representatives at ward, constituency, district and provincial levels.
