In forest ecosystems, disturbances that cause tree mortality create canopy gaps, increase growth of understory vegetation, and alter the abiotic environment. These impacts may have interacting effects on populations of ground-dwelling invertebrates that regulate ecological processes such as decom- position and nutrient cycling. A manipulative experiment was designed to decouple effects of simultane- ous disturbances to the forest canopy and ground-level vegetation to understand their individual and combined impacts on ground-dwelling invertebrate communities. We quantified invertebrate abundance, richness, diversity, and community composition via pitfall traps in response to a factorial combination of two disturbance treatments: canopy gap formation via girdling and understory vegetation removal. For- mation of gaps was the primary driver of changes in invertebrate community structure, increasing activity- abundance and taxonomic richness, while understory removal had smaller effects. -

Bevezetés Somogy megye féregfaunájáról a jelenleg ismert és fellelhető adatok alapján nagyon hiányosak az ismereteink. A szórványos adatok, nagyobb taxonómiai revíziós munkák részeként megjelenő fajjegyzékek, előfordulási adatok a vél hetően gazdag fauna töredékét reprezentálják. A rendelkezésünkre álló ada tokból tehát a faunáról szinte semmiféle értékelés nem adható. A szerény adat tömeg a kutatások hiányára, illetőleg azok szükségességére hívja fel a figyel met. A következőkben „féreg" törzsenként (ahol az indokolt osztályonként) kö zöljük a megye területéről ismert fajokat a lelőhelyekkel. Az élősködőiméi a gazdaállat nevét is megadjuk. Young Department of Entomology 445 Russell Labs University of Wisconsin-Madison Madison, WI 53706 Abstract: A survey of Wisconsin Nitidulidae and Kateretidae yielded 78 species through analysis of literature records, museum and private collections, and three years of field research (2000-2002). Twenty-seven species (35% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state records, having never been previously recorded from the state. Wisconsin distribution, along with relevant collecting techniques and natural history information, are summarized. The Wisconsin nitidulid and kateretid faunae are compared to reconstructed and updated faunal lists for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and south-central Canada. -
HUNGARY Hungary Is a Republic with a Population of Approximately 10
HUNGARY Hungary is a republic with a population of approximately 10 million and a multiparty parliamentary democracy. Legislative authority is vested in the unicameral parliament (National Assembly). The National Assembly elects the head of state, the president, every five years. The president appoints a prime minister from the majority party or coalition. The National Assembly elections on April 11 and 25 were assessed as free and fair, with the conservative Fidesz- Christian Democrat (KDNP) coalition winning enough seats in the second round to achieve a two-thirds majority. Fidesz's prime ministerial candidate, Viktor Orban, took office on May 29. Security forces reported to civilian authorities. Human rights problems included police use of excessive force against suspects, particularly Roma; new restrictions on due process; new laws that expanded restrictions on speech and the types of media subject to government regulation; government corruption; societal violence against women and children; sexual harassment of women; and trafficking in persons. Other problems continued, including extremist violence and harsh rhetoric against ethnic and religious minority groups and discrimination against Roma in education, housing, employment, and access to social services. Arbitrary or Unlawful Deprivation of Life There were no reports that the government or its agents committed arbitrary or unlawful killings during the year. In December 2009 the Somogy County Military Prosecutor's Office pressed charges against 10 prison guards at the Kaposvar prison for causing the death of a pretrial detainee and physically assaulting nine other inmates in February 2009. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 25th September 2009 2 Abstract This thesis examines the nature of lord-peasant relations in the final stages of Hungarian seigneurialism, dating roughly from 1700 to the emancipation of the peasantry in 1848. It investigates how the terms of the peasants’ relations with their lords, especially their obligations and the rights to the land they farmed, were established, both through written law and by customary practice. It also examines how the reforms of this period sought to redefine lord-peasant relations and rights to landed property. Under Maria Theresa land reform had been a means to protect the rural status quo and the livelihood of the peasantry: by the end of the 1840s it had become an integral part of a liberal reform movement aiming at the complete overhaul of Hungary’s ‘feudal’ social and economic system. In this period the status of the peasantry underpinned all attempts at reform. All reforms were claimed to be in the best interests of the peasantry, yet none stemmed from the peasants themselves. Conversely, the peasantry had means to voice their grievances through petitions and recourse to the courts, and took the opportunity provided by the reforms to reassert their rights and renegotiate the terms of their relations to their landlords. -

Clinic update page 2 Below is the fruit insect report from the past two weeks: Berry Crops: Picnic/sap beetles Reports suggest that Japanese beetle pressure is finally starting to taper off for the page 2 year. This insect has been particularly destructive in the southern two thirds of the Spotted wing drosophila update state this year and growers should continue to monitor for additional beetles if high page 3 numbers have been observed the past few weeks. Cranberries: Cranberry degree-day map and Fall webworms have been popping up throughout the state the past few weeks. The update silken tents are quite obvious in southern portions of the state. Farther north, page 7 caterpillars are small, so thorough scouting can help prevent issues before significant damage occurs. Grapes: Wine and table grape developmental stages Several samples of apples with codling moth caterpillar damage have recently come page 8 in to the UW Insect Diagnostic Lab. These have typically been from backyard growers that had not been using monitoring traps for this pest. Tree Fruits: Silver leaf of apple Many stink bug samples have come into the page 12 UW Insect Diagnostic Lab recently. Nymphs Reduced risk insecticide: Venerate (juveniles) of the green stink bug have been page 14 spotted in southern Wisconsin for several Apple maturity index report weeks. -

Volume 52 Number 03 April 27, 2007 Weather and Pests Despite some rainy weather, spring planting and tillage activities have accelerated considerably. Farmers are busy planting corn, oats, peas, potatoes and early sweet corn. Successive days of sunshine and above-average temperatures followed by a day or two of rainfall have transformed rural southern Wisconsin landscapes into rolling green fields of alfalfa and winter grains. Average high temperatures ranged from the mid-50s to low 70s, while average low temperatures ranged from the mid-30s to 40 degrees. Alfalfa acreage has shown very little winter damage after the unseasonably cold weather earlier this month. Pest insect activity has been minimal so far this season, with the most noteworthy events occurring in apple orchards and alfalfa fields. UNIT 1 Traditional multi-tasking Seumas McSporran is a very busy man. He’s 60 and has thirteen jobs. He is a postman, a policeman, a fireman, a taxi driver, a school-bus driver, a boatman, an ambulance driver, an accountant, a petrol attendant, a barman and an undertaker. Aso, he and his wife, Margaret, have a shop and a small hotel. Seumas lives and works on the island of Gigha in th west of Scotland. Only 120 people live on Gigha buti n summer 150 tourists come by boat every day. Every weekday Seumas gets up at 1 6 am. and makes breakfast for the hotel guests. At 8 am. he drives the island’s children to school. At 9 am. he collects the post from the boat and delivers it to all the houses on the island. He also delivers the beer to the island’s only pub. Then he helps Margaret in the shop. He says: ’Margaret likes being busy, too. We never have holidays and we don’t like watching TV. In the evenings Margaret makes dinner and I do the accounts. At 10 pm. we have a glass of wine and then we go to bed. Perhaps our life isn’t very exciting, but we like it.’ UNIT 2 Getting around Somogy Lake Balaton, which is about 70 kms long, is on the norther border of Somogy county. -
