At the Origins of the Portrait of the Early Modern Scholar After many years I am returning to the subject of two portraits of the brilliant astronomer, the citizen of Gdansk (German Danzig), Johannes Hevelius (1610-1687)1. One of the paintings can be found, as of 1681, in the Gdansk City Council Library, now known as The Polish Academy of Sciences Gdansk Library [Fig. 1]2, whereas the second, donated by the astronomer in gratitude for accepting him into the Royal Society of London for the Promotion of Natural Knowledge, could be found, as of 1679, in the Bodleian Library in Oxford [Fig. 2], after which, in 2001, it was moved to the city's Museum of the History of Science3. This return to my earlier research was provoked by the exhibition Johannes Hevelius and Gdansk of his Times in Gdansk Historical Museum4, which was organised in the summer of 2011 in celebration of the 400th an niversary of the astronomer's birth. After more than 300 years the two almost identical portraits of Hevelius hung next to each other, making it possible, for the first time, to directly compare them. For the first time it also became possible to notice and decipher in the Oxford portrait the barely visible, yet legible signature of Andreas Stech (1635-1697), located to the right of the astronomer's finger touching the celestial globe: Andr. The Gdansk Portrait A pen, for the moment idle, sticks out from the scholar's right hand. He sits at a table covered by a table carpet, at work on the The artist depicted Hevelius in his study, with bookshelves to his second volume of the Machinae coelestis, in which he is about to left and a decorative drape in the upper right-hand corner. The full sitting at a table, his bare head of graying, wavy hair reaching entry for that day can be read on page 789 of this work, published down to his shoulders. His facial hair - his moustache and small in 1679 [Fig. 5]5. From underneath the tome, at the edge of the beard - do not hide his fleshy lips. A bald-headed man with an exotic-looking moustache looks out at us from a magazine cover. The face, taken from a Baroque period portrait, is shown wearing a modern white-collar shirt. ‘How Polish is a Pole?’ the heading asks.2 Clearly, the ugly, round, bewhiskered face is meant to represent a stereotypical native of Poland (Figure 1). This cover of the popular weekly Wprost provides a perfect example of the use of a Sarmat figure in the twenty-first-century mass media.     Presentation of Human Forms in Polish Art Authors Gabriela Kurowska, Michal Seroczynski, Ewa Bajon, Irena Obszynska CKU, Centre for Continuing Education, Poland Introduction The purpose of the course will be to present in particular the development of the presentation of human form, both sacred and civil, in Polish architecture, drawings, sculpture and paintings during the period 11-20 century. The course will start with a theoretical part providing details on selected topics from the scope of developments, its historical back ground which affected the arts evolution in the 10 centuries. The art by itself concerns the man. The man is its creator and its onlooker. Besides, the man is the art’s contents. That happens even when he is not illustrated. The ways of presenting the human beings in art in the scale of the centuries can speak quite precisely about the humans’ conditions and various respective circumstances- that both refers to the authors, and to the masterpieces’ characters as well. While watching sculptures, pictures, drawings, and other artistic artifacts, we come across the knowledge of our ancestors, their intellectual maturity, emotional disposal, and finally- the remarkable abilities. We also experience their sensitivity and extraordinary imagination, not occasionally we find ourselves in a state of moving to tears, or something similar that draws us into the spiritual depths. The human’s effigy was accepted by us just as an efficient, consequent method- a key serving for penetrating the most absorbing phenomena within the art present and developing in Poland. This deep concern was his not only because Poland was the first country to which, in his lifetime, he sent members of the two congregations he founded (the Priests of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity) to evangelize in turbulent times.

Sylwestra Kaliskiego 2, 00 – 908 Warsaw, Poland * Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: The paper presents measurement results of LIBS and optical microscopy investigations applied to five 17th-century oil paintings, belonging to the collection of the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów. The analysis devoted to ground layers at depths of about 200 – 300 μm (40 – 60 laser pulses) allowed to find stratigraphy distributions of elements characteristic for ground layers. During the latest investigations, the researchers concentrated mainly on the comparison of some specific elements like Li, Ba, Ti which could indicate the origin of the pigment and help in the process of classification of the paintings. LIBS spectra analyses were supported by statistical factorial analyses which visibly confirmed conclusions drawn from spectral and optical microscopy research.
