1989 NMGS Spring Meeting: Abstract-2118 STRATIGRAPHY OF THE CRETACEOUS BISBEE GROUP IN THE CENTRAL PELONCILLO MOUNTAINS, HIDALGO COUNTY, NEW MEXICO Steven N. Hayden1 and Spencer G. Box 7010, Albuquerque, NM, 87194 Gillerman (1958, NMBMMR Bulletin 57) named four formations for strata of the Bisbee Group (Aptian-Albian) exposed in the central Peloncillo Mountains. The type section of Gillerman's McGhee Peak Formation is on McGhee Peak in the SW1/4 SE1/4 SW1/4, sec. 34, T24S, R31W and consists of 107 m of interbedded siliceous conglomerate, sandstone and siltstone. We correlate these strata with the Glance Conglomerate and Morita Formation of the Bisbee Group, but because of interbedding of Glance and Morita lithologies we are unable to recognize separate formations. The McGhee Peak Formation is homotaxial with the Hell to Finish Formation of the Big and Little Hatchet mountains to the east, but we refer to this interval in the central Peloncillo Mountains as the Glance/Morita Formation. We designate a type section for Gillerman's Carbonate Hill Formation in the NE1/4 SE1/4 SW1/4, sec. 34, T24S,R21 W where it consists of 49 m of brownish gray to graylimestone and siltstone. In other sections near the Carbonate Hill Mine (E1/2, sec. 34; T24S, R21W) it may be as much as 90 m thick and contains a late Aptian marine invertebrate fauna dominated by Ostrea, Exogyra, turritelloid gastropods and parahoplitid ammonoids. Gillerman's Carbonate Hill Formation is equivalent to the Mural Formation of the Bisbee Group and the oyster limestone and reef limestone members of the U-Bar Formation in the Big Hatchet Mountains. In the central Peloncillo Mountains, we abandon the term Carbonate Hill Formation in favor of Mural Formation. Gillerman's Still Ridge Formation type section runs from the SW1/4 SE1/4 NW1/4 to the SE1/4 NW1/4 NW1/4,sec. 34, T24S, R21W. Its base is not exposed, it is 116+ mthick and consists of interbedded limestone siltstone and limestone- pebble conglomerate. We equate it to part of the Mural Formation and with the suprareef limestone member of the U-Bar Formation in the Big Hatchet Mountains. We thus abandon the term still RidgeI Formation in favor of Mural Formation. Gillerman's Johnny Bull Sandstone type section is in the NW1/4 SW1/4, sec, 4, T25S, R21W. This also is an incomplete section, being in fault contact with the Mural Formation at the base and with Precambrian granitoid rocks at the top. The Johnny Bull here consists of 241+ m of metamorphosed, interbedded sandstone, siltstone and shale. The Johnny Bull correlates with thecinturaI Formation of the Bisbee Group and with the Mojado Formation of the Big and Little Hatchet mountains. We thus abandon the name Johnny Bull in favor of Cintura. Drewes and Thorman (1980, USGS Map I-1220) misidentified this unit as the Morita Formation at its type section. Hayes (1970, USGS Professional Paper 658-B) correlated it with the Ringbone Formation of the Little Hatchet Mountains, which is of Late Cretaceous age. However, the Bobcat Hill Conglomerate, which overlies the cintura Formation in the central Peloncillo Mountains, has yielded , Late Cretaceous dinosaur fossils and is the apparent correlative of the Ringbone. Nourse Geological Sciences Department, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California 91768, USA ABSTRACT A 200–500-km-wide belt along the southwestern margin of cratonic North America is pervaded by northwest- and east-trending faults that fl ank basins con- taining thick deposits of locally derived conglomerate and sedimentary breccia. These deposits that crop out mainly in the northern part of mainland Mexico, or southern parts of Arizona and New Mexico are unconformable at their bases, have similar Upper Jurassic and/or Lower Cretaceous stratigraphic ages, and commonly preserve volcanic components in the lower parts of upward-fi ning sections. We argue that these basins share a common structural origin, based on: (1) the presence of faults, locally preserved, that generally defi ne the basin margins, (2) similar basal units comprised of coarse conglomeratic strata derived from adjacent basement, and (3) locally preserved syntectonic relationships to bounding faults. Fault orientations, and our observation that the faults (and their associated basins) extend south to the inferred trace of the Late Jurassic Mojave-Sonora megashear, suggest that the basins formed in response to transtension associated with sinistral movement along the megashear. Northwest-striking left-lateral strike-slip faults that terminate at east-striking normal faults defi ne releasing left steps at which crustal pull-apart structures formed.

Cretaceous fossil vertebrates, especially dinosaurs, from southeastern Arizona can be summarized as encompassing largely isolated records, mostly from Lower Cretaceous strata, and a single diverse assemblage from one Upper Cretaceous collecting area. These fossils can be assigned to two temporal intervals: (1) Al- bian records from the upper part of the Bisbee Group in the Empire, Whetstone and Mule Mountains, including the ornithopod “Tenontosaurus” and the sauropod Sonorasaurus thompsoni Ratkevich; and (2) Campanian records, including titanosaurs, hadrosaurs, ceratopsians, dromaeosaurs, and tyrannosaurs from the Fort Crittenden Formation in the Santa Rita Mountains, and the “Tucson Mountains dino- saur,” a hadrosaur from the Tucson Mountains. In the Black Mesa basin of northeastern Arizona, late Cenomanian- middle Turonian records of vertebrate fossils are mostly of selachian teeth but include a few records of marine turtles, crocodilians, plesiosaurs and mosasaurs.

In addition to these, more than 40 stratl­ g raphic papers containing either important lists, new occurrences, or s~ratl­ graphic or geog raphic ranges of invertebrate fossils have also been pubhshed. No complete monog raphic studies of the faunas of any Arizona formations have yet been published. Stoyanow's Lower Cretaceous Stratigraphy (1946b), dealt only with part of the fauna of the Bisbee group. Other workers, to select a few at random such as Hill (1959), discussed only Ordovician corals, Zeller (1957) in a re g io~al paper dealt only with endothyroid foraminifers and Chronic (1952) with Kaibab formation mollusks. The Smithsonian Institution, however, has recently issued a series of monog raphic reoorts on the oaleontol02v of the Cabor ca a r ea in norther n Sonora. Mexico . Coope r. Dunbar. Duncan. Miller. and Knight (19 5 3) . described the Per mian fauna of the El Antimonio r egion. Easton Sanders. Knight. and Miller (19 58) described the Mississippian fauna from near Cabo rca. a nd Cooper. Arellano. Johnson. Ok ulitc h . Stoya now. and Lac hman (1952) described the Cambrian fauna from near Cabo rca. REGIONAL DIVISIONS ., If we divide Arizona into northern (the Colorado Plateau) and southexn (the rest of the state) portions, we find a ratio of approximately 4 papers published on the northern region to 1 paper published on the southern region.
