Sea birds and plant life thrive on the exposed coastline, while the nationally signicant Lakes Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera are home to a variety of waterfowl, eels and freshwater sh. The area is exposed to both northwesterly and southerly winds, so take warm clothing, food and drink, and be prepared for headwinds. From Burdan's Gate at the southern end of Eastbourne, follow the gravel track along the harbour to Pencarrow Lighthouse (7 km). Rounding the corner to the true shores of Cook Strait, the road crosses gravel and sandbanks damming the two freshwater lakes. Please stay on the road to protect vulnerable coastal plants and nesting birds. Further along, you reach the remains of the Paiaka, wrecked on this coast in 1906. Return the same way. More experienced cyclists may want to explore the headland between the two lakes, go through the gates where indicated and wind your way up the farm track to the top of the hill. The ascent beside the larger of the two lakes (Kohangatera) is the more gradual of the two. Conditions: The park has moderately steep hills and is exposed in places. There is no shelter in the Parangarahu Lakes Area or Baring Head. As the weather can be changeable please: Carry warm and waterproof clothing Carry enough food and drink for your trip Plan your route and leave your intentions with someoneWear strong lace-up footwear The Hawtry Route on the Main Ridge between the McKenzie Track and the top of the Kereru Track is an unformed track and marked with orange discs. It takes approximately 1 hour to walk this section. In the interests of safety, inexperienced people should allow plenty of time to nish their walk in daylight. Note that it takes at least 30 minutes to walk down from the Main Ridge to Days Bay or Eastbourne. Some sections of the tracks are moderately steep and slippery when wet. Avoid streams in heavy rain. See NZMS sheet BQ32 for further detail of the terrain. https://www.walkingaccess.govt.nz/track/pencarrow-coast-road/pdfPreview 2/4 9/26/2021 Pencarrow Coast Road — NZ Walking Access Commission Ara Hīkoi Aotearoa How to get here Private vehicle: Parangarahu Lakes Area: Burdan's Gate, at the end of Muritai Road, Eastbourne.
