Presidents Report

Welcome back to football after the school holiday break. I hope that all the people involved with the Mighty Knights had a safe and happy break and enjoyed their time away from football. It is amazing where the year goes and the term break means we are almost at the end of another season. There is one more week of matches for the entire club so it is appropriate we have a club night this Sunday night. We will be announcing a player of the month awards and have some great raffle prizes as well.

From Sunday the 25th July we begin the run into Lightening Premierships for the Under 9’s and then Under 10’s followed by a staggered finals fixture for our teams from Under 11 through to Under 16’s. Please check this link to see the relevant dates for your age group. http://sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-4901-0-0-0&sID=165186.

It was after Round 4 this year that I first raised the issue of an expanded committee. Unfortunately I have not had any approaches to fill these positions. With the substantial growth we have

Growing Injuries

During adolescence growth is rapid, and bones grow faster than muscles. This causes muscles to get tight and the growth centre in the bone to get weak and soft. When combined! with a significant amount of exercise this may sometimes lead to injury called a traction apophysitis. This may cause pain and inflammation where the muscle attaches to the bone due to excessive traction from the tight muscle.

The two most common apophysitis injuries in the growing athlete occur at the heel where the Achilles tendon attaches (Sever’s) and at the knee where the patella tendon attaches (Osgood Schlatters) to the bone.

Different parts of the body grow at different rates. In boys the growth around the ankle occurs between the ages of 11-13, whereas around the knee this occurs between 13-15 years of age. Therefore we commonly see Sever’s in 9-12 year old boys and Osgood Schlatters in 11-15 year olds.

Management involves load management, with sport sometimes requiring to be ceased, however modification and reduction in the amount of training or game time is usually adequate. Physiotherapy management involves addressing biomechanical deficits, monitoring load and addressing muscle imbalances. Taping and ice may also ease symptoms.

Historically it has been thought that symptomatic tendinopathy (tendonitis) was rare in children and adolescents, however there is evidence that suggests some tendonitis pain is misdiagnosed as growing pain or traction apophysitis. Therefore tendinopathy should be considered for differential diagnosis or as a co-existing condition as management will somewhat differ from apophysitis. Both of these injuries may recover quickly if appropriate early management is implemented.

Saturday 3 July 2010 may have been a holiday for many at EMJFC, but not for the 32 Under 11 Knights that arrived at Lucas to battle the visiting Mosman Swans.

In what was also a first, boys from our Blues, Whites, and Reds had the chance to play in 2 mixed teams under the watchful eye of Coaches Tony (General) Phillips and Greg (Wardy) Ward. As far as games go, both teams performed well and over a combined 8 quarter game proved too strong for the visiting Swans. Mulcahy, Styles, Ed Ralph, Stephens, Godfrey, Stephenson, Morrisby, Sutherland, Conron, Phillips, and Johnston EMJFC’s Chris Ralph interviewing an unsuspecting victim in his roving reporting role on the day. I think were all among the Goal kickers, so well done to them and Sammy Newman from Channel 9 ought be worried to their team-mates who got the ball to them. when you see the video of Chris in action (check out the video on our website). In all, some 250 people enjoyed a full, fun-packed day from 10am -6pm (for the stayers). The day was full of great activities including a vocal National Anthem by the players; a visit by Melbourne AFL captain James McDonald; a 50 minute DVD showing pre-game warm-ups, game highlights and interviews; great BBQ (thanks go to Dan Adaway, Sam Butcher, Denis Ralph, Lucy Morley, and Sophie Ralph) for the kids; great food (Alva) and Drinks (Bill and Cheryl); a great fundraising auction for future interstate games (thanks go to Paul Connors), and the all-important presentation of the perpetual trophy to the winning Coaches.

A special thanks also to all the 85+ Mosman visitors for making the trip down south. President Andrew Hurrell said it best when he confirmed this was all about creating an unforgettable experience for the Kids; and that it was.

So well done to all on another truly successful event for both Clubs!

In the second half we were strengthened by three boys in Jack Gilbert, Jamie Hess and Tom Hayne who kindly played before their U12 game with East Malvern Blue. In the second quarter it was our turn to face the music, or in this case wind, and it was just a couple of poor decisions that resulted in goals to St Peters. In our case we have a number of boys who are learning the game and with that will come turnovers.

The highlight of the quarter, and our only goal, came when Sam Anderson marked overhead in a pack and kicked to a lead. The ball took an ugly bounce and ended up with a couple of St Peters defenders before Sam followed up, stripped the ball from his opponent, baulked the next one before taking two bounces and straightening up to kick an absolute ripper of a goal, arguably his best for the year.

In this quarter Jim Cowie was involved in two really good clearances and Fraser Hood took two marks. Matthew Chadwick tackled particularly well and Chris Harris got better as the game went on, given he has missed a lot of football this year.

4 th The Knights dominated the first five minutes of Quarter the last quarter but were unable to convert. Zac Kourambas and Spencer Spielvogel were unlucky not to score from the numerous opportunities that were provided by the hard working midfielders. The boys continued to tackle hard and their work- rate was as good as it has been all season. It was heart breaking that Beaumaris were able to convert from their first foray forward pushing the lead out to more than a goal. The lead was enough to see the home team to victory.

Ryan Mathews was deservedly voted our best player by the opposition coach. Well done Ryno! U9 White def U9 St Peters

With just two regular games remaining and after the break last week for the school holidays it was clear the team wanted to make a good start to proceedings.
