On behalf of the Irving Schools Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 29th Annual Breakfast with the Stars!

We appreciate your presence and support this morning as we honor our brightest stars in Irving ISD. Today, the Irving Schools Foundation will award 131 college scholarships to our exceptional Irving ISD seniors, four scholarships to our hard working teachers, and three scholarships to our dedicated IISD staff members with a total value of $232,250!

I would like to thank our presenting sponsor, NISSAN, who has graciously supported this event for 13 consecutive years. Additionally, I would like to thank all of the sponsors of this event. It is because of their generous investment that we are able to host this exciting event where we showcase our students and their many accomplishments.

Lastly, I wish to thank our scholarship reviewers, counselors, volunteers, scholarship donors, parents and guardians, community supporters, and the entire staff of the Irving ISD for their support of the scholarship process. I also wish to give a special thanks to John McCaa, as this marks his 13th year helping us celebrate our Stars in Irving. Because of you, our students will be college and career ready!

We are so thankful that we have the support of our community, as we continue our mission to provide a world-class education to our students. The demand continues to grow in our schools, but the community continues to deliver, and YOU have helped us make a difference in the lives of over 35,000 children in Irving. John McCaa was born in Rantoul, Illinois (Chanute Air Force Base).

He’s a US Air Force brat who, following birth lived in Idaho... then Nebraska... then Spain.... then back to Nebraska for Junior High... then back to Madrid, Spain for High School, and finally back to Nebraska for a Jesuit education and degree at Creighton University in Omaha in Journalism and Mass Communication.

He worked in Omaha at WOWT television for more than seven years as a reporter and anchor before coming to WFAA-TV in 1984, as a reporter in the Fort Worth newsroom.

He was later promoted to Manager of the Fort Newsroom. In 1988, John was transferred to the newsroom as reporter, then later became Weekend anchor and News Manager. John now serves as Anchor of the 5, 6 and 10PM newscasts at WFAA-TV writes the award-winning “Uncut Commentary” for the Friday 6PM news broadcast.

He has reported on stories across including live broadcasts from the Columbia explosion and the Texas A&M Bonfire tragedy...on national stories (The September 11th Terror Attack, the John F. Kennedy, Jr. plane crash) and internationally from Rome, Hong Kong and Honduras.

He is married and has one son.

John is an award-winning journalist with a Master’s degree in Politics from the and a PhD in Humanities-History of Ideas from the University of Texas at Dallas. He is a member of three academic honor societies: Golden Key, Delta Epsilon Iota and Phi Kappa Phi and in 2012 was inducted into the University of North Texas’ C.E. Shuford Hall of Honor for making a significant contribution in the communications arena.

He has served as President of the Press Club of Dallas and the President of the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators. His interests include music, film, travel and art.

Preference will be given to a student with an interest in pursuing a degree in science, technology, and/or engineering in college or trade school. Student must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA. Irving Lions Cardwell Prep Vocational Scholarship ($500) This scholarship is awarded to a graduate of Barbara Cardwell Preparatory to use for tuition at a college or technical university of their choice and obtain skills and/or professional certification to be used in the job market. The Marjorie Sue Lee Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) Established by Bill Werner in memory of his sister Marjorie Sue Lee. Awarded to a graduating senior from Nimitz High School. Must have attended Britain Elementary and Bowie Middle School. Recipient must plan to major in education and become an elementary teacher for the Irving Independent School District. 8 D-UP for Deebs Scholarship in Memory of Dalton August Debrick ($2,000) Established in 2015 in memory of Dalton “Deebs” Debrick, a 2014 Nimitz graduate, who passed away his first week of college at Texas Tech. This scholarship will be awarded to a male graduating Nimitz senior who intends to pursue an educational degree to teach and coach. The student must have been involved in team sports at the high school varsity level, exemplifies school spirit, have academic success and holds at least a 3.0 GPA and has given back to the Irving community. Dalton Debrick B.I.G. D.O.G.S. Organization Scholarship ($1,000) Established in 2015 in memory of Dalton Debrick by The B.I.G. D.O.G.S. Youth Organization and family. Dalton was a 2014 graduate of Nimitz High School who was active in youth sports in the Irving community for over 13 years including the B.I.G. D.O.G.S. Organization. Awarded to a male graduating Nimitz Senior. The student must have been involved in at least 4 consecutive years in City of Irving and/or YMCA Sports. The student must demonstrate academic success by holding at least a 3.0 GPA and has given back to the Irving community. Jared Jenkins - Nimitz High School

Hank Kimbriel Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) Established in 2015 in loving memory of Harry A. Kimbriel, III, devoted husband, friend and community leader. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who can demonstrate leadership skills, preferably on the Lacrosse field. However, consideration will be given to other sports, in addition to leadership in school, church or community. In a world where things are often “all about me,” candidates must be a team player and give examples of what they have learned about being part of a team, how they have contributed, and how they have made a difference. Students must enroll full-time in a college or university with the goal of a 4-year degree and plan to continue participation in activities developing their leadership and team skills. Candidate must have held a GPA of 3.0 or higher for 2 years in high school. Christopher Perez - Nimitz High School

9 Jim Bennett Dream Big Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship was created in honor of Jim Bennett, established by Kevin Phillips. Student must have participated in traditional sports their junior and senior years. (soccer, football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, wrestling, cheerleading and/or swimming). This student must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.50 and must be a graduate from . Erin Sanchez—Irving High School

John R. Good Alum Scholarship ($1,000) Established by John R. Good Elementary School. This student must have attended John R. Good Elementary for at least 3 years. The recipient must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Graduate must have participated in school activities and at least 100 hours of community service. This student must demonstrate that he/she has overcome adverse economic, social or academic hardship. The recipient must be a graduate from Irving High School. Giselle Tellez-Silverio - Irving High School

The Angel Flores Scholarship ($1,000) Established by Ingrid Rothe in memory of Angel Flores. The recipient of this scholarship must have participated in the ESL Program at Austin or Bowie MS. Graduate is required to complete an essay on how the ESL program has helped them succeed and what hardship they have overcome in their lifetime. Jeysel Valencia - Irving High School

AVID Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship is awarded to a graduating AVID Senior who has been in the AVID system at least three years. Banking on America Scholarship ($1,500) Established in 1994 by Bank of America and awarded to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a business related course of study at a college or university. Ciceley Miles - Nimitz High School

Barbara Cardwell Future of Education Scholarship ($2,000) The Barbara Cardwell Future of Education Scholarship is named for the longest serving Irving ISD School Board Trustee, Barbara Cardwell. Mrs. Cardwell strongly believed in public education and that it is the foundation upon which our country is built. This Scholarship is for a graduating senior who is in the top 20% of his/her class and who intends to major in education in order to become an educator in public schools. The recipient of this scholarship should have a record of community service and the intent to continue community service while in college. Lindsey Hyden—Nimitz High School

11 Baylor Medical Center at Irving Scholarship ($3,000) Awarded to four graduating students who demonstrate a connection to Baylor Irving by having volunteered at the hospital, completed a junior student rotation or completed a senior internship through the HOSA program. The student must plan to pursue higher education at a four-year university or college to major in a health care related field. The student must rank in the top 10% of his/her high school class. The student must demonstrate good character as evidences in at least 2 letters of reference and must have actively participated in community activities or community service during his/her high school years. The student must demonstrate active participation in extra-curricular activities or organizations for two years during his/her high school years. Bobby Lindamood Scholarship for Girls Established by Ed Farrow and awarded to a graduating female senior from Nimitz High School who will be attending Dallas Baptist University. 12 Carol Wood Culinary Arts and Small Business Scholarship ($1,500 ) This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who plans to obtain a degree in culinary arts and/or small business and, is involved in school and community activities, has an economic need and plans to attend culinary school, secondary school or college. Coach Mike Farda Difference Maker Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior who intends to pursue an educational degree to teach and/or coach. The student must have been involved in team sports while achieving academic success and have participated in community service. The student must have exhibited making a difference in their community. Cubbies Against Cancer Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a senior that attended Bowie Middle School. Must have been directly involved with (ex: self, relative, friend) to someone who had been diagnosed with Cancer. The student must also be in financial need. Eva Wong - Singley Academy

David H. Brune Memorial Scholarship ($2,000) Awarded to a graduating senior who ranks in the top 25% of their class, participates in academic achievement beyond basic high school course curriculum and pursues a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts/pre-law degree program at an accredited university or college in Texas. Tsion Hailu - MacArthur High School

Don Brown Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship will be awarded to a Nimitz athlete in good standing with letter from Coach stating they ended/or is currently in the program as an eligible athlete (not cheer or drill team). Student must show involvement in community service projects and hold a 3.0 GPA. This scholarship may be used for College, University, Community College or Vocational School. 14 Espanita Homeowners Association Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship is awarded to a student that lives in the Espanita Addition, who plans to attend community college, four year college or accredited technical school. Additionally, the student must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Taciana Causey - MacArthur High School Evelyn Clifton Scholarship ($1,000) Established by Evelyn Clifton and endowed by her children and friends to honor her memory, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who attended Clifton Early Childhood School. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to major in education at a college or university; preferably with emphasis on early childhood development. Kimberly Fuentes - Nimitz High School Exxon Mobil Hispanic Scholarship ($1,000) Established by Exxon in 1992 and awarded to a graduating Hispanic senior with a financial need who has an overall average of 85 and plans to pursue a college/university degree. Martin Donjuan - Irving High School Fernando Garcia Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior and former Bowie student who has overcome obstacles to achieve academic success. Gladys Valchar Opportunity Scholarship ($1,000) Established in 2013 by Gladys Valchar to celebrate her 44 years of association with Irving High School students as a teacher and counselor. Having personally and professionally seen how the opportunity for a college education can change a person’s future, this scholarship will be awarded to an Irving High School graduate who will be the first in his/ her family to attend college. The applicant must rank in the top 20% of the class, have financial need, be involved in at least one extracurricular activity during their senior year, have at least 25 hours of documented volunteer service (other than the SAVE teacher assistant program) and plan to attend either a Dallas Community College or the University of North Texas.

Aileen Marquez - Irving High School 15 Hayden Morgan Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior pursuing a four year college degree, who has demonstrated involvement in both extracurricular and community activities while maintaining a high academic standard. Hillary Alamene - MacArthur High School

HIPPY Academic Scholarship ($1,000) Created and supported by the National Council of Jewish Women, this scholarship is awarded to two graduating seniors from the following high schools: Irving, Nimitz, MacArthur, Singley Academy or Barbara Cardwell Preparatory Center. The student must have completed at least one year in the HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) program, have a minimum of a B grade point average and have completed a minimum of 20 hours community service or volunteer work. Hitachi Minority Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior of a minority culture who has exhibited academic achievement, has financial need, and plans to pursue a degree in engineering, math or science at a college or university. Luis Marin - Irving High School

Hitachi Women Engineering Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior woman who has exhibited academic achievement, has financial need, and plans to pursue a degree in engineering, math or science at a college or university. Joselyn Villalta - Nimitz High School

Inelda Alaniz Scholarship ($1,750) Established in 2009 by Inelda Alaniz and awarded to an Irving High School graduating Hispanic student with a grade point average of 90.0 or above who plans to attend an accredited junior, college, college or university. Hannah Zuniga - Irving High School

16 Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau Hospitality Industry Scholarship ($2,000) Awarded to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a course of study in the hospitality industry at an institution of higher learning and enter the hospitality field as a career. Hospitality industry includes programs of study such as: Food and Beverage/Restaurant Management Programs, Hotel-Motel Programs, Convention and Visitors Bureau Programs, Tourism Programs and Hospitality Industry Programs. Irving Friendship Foundation Scholarship ($4,000) This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from any school that is located in Irving, Texas. This student must be involved in their community through active volunteer service. Students that demonstrate economic need will receive special consideration. Alexander Drummond - MacArthur High School

Irving High School Mathematics Scholarship ($2,000) Awarded to a senior from Irving High School, the student must have successfully completed at least one AP Math Class, have community service hours, and has high overall academic achievements. Nicholas O’Brien - Irving High School

Irving Rotary Irving High School Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior from Irving High School that exhibits academic, community and leadership success. Special consideration will be given to a student that is a graduate of RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) or the Rotaract Club. Jade Hamm - Irving High School

17 Irving Las Colinas Rotary Doug Fox Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior from MacArthur High School that exhibits academic, community and leadership success. Irving Las Colinas Rotary Nimitz High School Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior from Nimitz High School that exhibits academic, community and leadership success. Irving Las Colinas Rotary Singley Academy Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior from Singley Academy that exhibits academic, community and leadership success. Irving News/Louise Whitmer Memorial Journalism Scholarship ($1,000) Established in 1990 and given in memory of Louise Whitmer, a former editor of the newspaper, and awarded to a graduating senior who plans to major in journalism at a college/university. Ryan Shelton - Nimitz High School

18 Irving Noonday Lions Club Scholarships ($1,000) Established by the Irving Noonday Lions Club in 2003 & awarded to two seniors who have demonstrated service to their community outside the school environment and plan to continue after college. These recipients must have at least 50 hours of community service outside the school. Lamisa Abedin - MacArthur High School Rida Fatima - MacArthur High School

Irving Quilt Guild Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a degree in fine arts and has proven academic achievement. He/she must have participated in school and community activities and have a financial need. Jessica Hernandez - MacArthur High School

Irving Schools Foundation Academic Scholarship ($2,000) Awarded to a graduating senior at each high school who has achieved academic success and plans to pursue a college/university degree. Irving Sunrise Rotary- Austin Connally Scholarship ($1,000) Established by the Irving Sunrise Rotary and funded by Austin Connally and Rotary members, this scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from the Irving Independent School District. Eric Nguyen - Nimitz High School

19 Irving Symphony League – Scholarship for the Performing Arts ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior who has participated in a school or community based arts organization or who has taken private lessons for a minimum of two years and plans to pursue a degree in the performing arts (music, dance, drama) at a college or university. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 85 or above and demonstrated good character. Two (2) letters of recommendation; one school-related and community-related are required. Jack E. Singley Academy 10th Anniversary Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a senior from the Singley Academy that has had great academic achievement, participated in school and community activities and has a financial need. Jerry P. Shaw Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a student in the top 10% of their class, who is pursuing a college degree and who has been active in school and community services. Gabriela Ventura - Irving High School

20 Jerry Roe Memorial Scholarship ($2,000) Awarded to a graduating senior who has participated in a performing music organization for two years, demonstrates good character and plans to pursue a four-year college degree with a major in music. Must possess an overall average of 90 or above in music and be active in school and community activities. Stephanie Saldana - Nimitz High School

Jessica Renee Chermely Scholarship ($2,000) Awarded to a high school senior that plans to pursue a career as a teacher. The student must have community service hours. Leslie Portillo - Nimitz High School

Joe and Mella Ponce Scholarship ($1,500) Awarded to two graduating seniors who have an overall average of 85 and plans to pursue a college/university degree. Emilio Rangel - Irving High School Lorena Tirado - Irving High School

Joe Ponce Memorial Football/Track Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior who participated in football and/or track during his/her junior or senior year, plans to pursue additional education at a technical institute or college/university, has financial need, and takes part in school and community activities. John & Margie Stipes Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating Nimitz High School senior who has participated in athletics, athletic training, cheerleading, or drill team his/her junior and senior years, has an overall average of 85 or above, and plans to pursue a degree in education or athletic training at a college/university. 21 John Stipes Motivational Scholarship ($5,000) Awarded to four (4) graduating seniors who has overcome adverse social, economic, or personal situations to graduate from high school. Jordan Wayne Luddeke Memorial Scholarship ($1,500) Awarded to a graduating senior who ranks in the upper 20% of his/her class, must provide proof of community service, must be enrolled in a school organization or activity, describe financial need, and is open to any area of undergraduate study. Sunny Beck - Irving High School

Joy and Ralph Ellis Scholarship for Athletes ($8,000) Awarded to four graduating seniors from any Irving ISD high school who have participated in junior/senior athletic programs. A varsity letter is not required. 23 Larry Parrish Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship is funded by Carla Parrish and faculty and staff of Bowie Middle School in memory of Larry, a teacher and coach at Bowie for 29 years. This scholarship will be awarded to a Bowie Middle School graduate who is a dedicated student athlete, because athletics were Larry’s heart and soul at Bowie. Katlyn Peck - Nimitz High School

Las Colinas Cancer Center Foundation Scholarship by Dr. Gregory A. Echt ($1,500) Awarded to a graduating Irving ISD senior who ranks in the top 10% of their class and has a desire to pursue a degree in the medical field. Erik Vargas - Singley Academy

Lauralee Hubbard Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a student who has demonstrated the desire to pursue a college degree, has shown the capacity to succeed in the face of adversity and who has a financial need. Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a student that has demonstrated academic achievement. MacArthur High School Architecture, Construction and Engineering Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a senior that has participated for three years in the architecture, engineering and construction program at MacArthur High School. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have maintained good citizenship and plans on attending a community college or university to pursue further education in architecture, construction or engineering. MacArthur OBGYN Scholarship in memory of Dr. David Wollenman ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior is presently participating in the teen pregnancy program or has in the past. The student must have academic achievement with emphasis on science and math. Chelsea Velez - MacArthur High School

Marcella Porter Health & Physical Education Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior in the upper 25% of his/her class who plans to pursue college certification to teach or coach health and/or physical education. Taylor Lampkin - MacArthur High School

25 Marilyn Polous Community Service Scholarship ($1,500) Awarded to a graduating senior who has actively participated in community service. Applicant must provide 1) documentation of community service of at least 80 hours in the last 2 years and community service cannot be court mandated 2) An essay (at least 200 words) explaining how this community service impacted their life and their plans for the future. MarQualyne Farr Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior in the MacArthur High School band, has a cumulative GPA of 80, has participated in band all four years of high school, and is college-bound (music major is not required). Michael Sigurdson Memorial Scholarship ($2,750) Awarded to a graduating senior who has actively participated in art and has an overall average of 85 or above with an average of 90 or above in art and plans to pursue a college or university degree in art. Elizabeth Parks - MacArthur High School

Mr. Pike’s Special Pals Scholarship ($1,000) Available to any graduating senior from the Irving Independent School District that is: physically handicapped or certified to have special needs and the student must also be involved in their community and must display good character. Nicholas’ Scholarship ($1,000) Established in 1996 by Sam and Carla Smith in memory of their grandson, Nicholas. It is awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated leadership qualities, a commitment to higher education, who has an interest in journalism or the arts and who has financial need. 26 Nissan-Irving First Responder 9/11 Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior who demonstrates academic success, participates in various high school activities and community service, demonstrates responsible attendance record and is a relative to an Irving Firefighter. Nissan North America Scholarship ($2,250) Awarded to graduating senior in the top 10% of their class, active in extracurricular and community activities and who is pursuing a four-year college degree with a business or engineering major. Jean-Marcel Yacho - MacArthur High School

Nita Patrick Fine Arts Scholarship ($1,000) Established by Nita Patrick and awarded to a graduating senior who must have a B average and plans to attend a 4 year university or junior college of their choice. The recipient must be involved in music (private lessons or through IISD) and plans to major or minor in fine arts Marissa Broome - MacArthur High School

Phyllis Lyster Memorial Academic Scholarships ($1,250) Established in 1992 in memory of Phyllis Lyster and awarded to 2 Irving High School graduating seniors who plan to pursue a four year degree at a college or university. 27 Physical Therapy/Athletic Training Scholarship ($1,000) Established by Physical Therapy Associates of Irving and awarded to a graduating senior who has worked in physical therapy and/or in an athletic training setting for at least six months, has an overall average of 85 and plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy or athletic training. Plastronics Perseverance Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship was created by Plastronics Socket Company and is awarded to a graduating senior who has been forced to work full time to support themselves due to misfortune. He/she must have college admission grades. No direction for a major is required and will be open to all students in day or night classes. Mikaela Baker - MacArthur High School

Rebecca Gordon Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship was established by Bowie Middle School and is awarded to a graduating senior actively participating in fine arts who has demonstrated good grades and a financial need. Robyn Noneman Memorial Scholarship ($1,250) This scholarship was established in memory of Robyn Noneman, and is awarded to a graduating senior who is in the top 10% of their class. He/ she intends to pursue a degree in nursing and works part-time while in high school. Sitra Abdelhadi - Singley Academy

Sarah Cahill Good Citizen Scholarship ($1,000) Awarded to a graduating senior that must have attended T.J. Lee or Brandenburg Elementary for at least one year and is interested in pursuing a service related career. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher. Shima Elbosiry - Singley Academy

28 Scott Cagle Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) This scholarship was created in memory of Scott Cagle, and is awarded to an Athlete from Irving High School. This student must be involved in the inclusion program in Irving ISD. The student must maintain passing grades in college, trade school or community college. The student must demonstrate high moral character and self-discipline. Emanuel Pruitt - Irving High School

Spc. Josiah Vandertulip Memorial Scholarship ($3,000) Established in October 2004 by Louise and Robert Vandertulip to affirm Josiah’s life and honor his legacy of courage and sacrifice. Awarded to a graduating senior pursuing a four year college degree that has a B average or higher and shows creativity and humor. This scholarship will honor the type of student Josiah was and offer that student a chance to continue on with their education especially if their family is unable to provide for higher education.
