The Secular Music of the Yemenite Jews As an Expression of Cultural Demarcation Between the Sexes
JASO 27/2 (1996): 113-135 THE SECULAR MUSIC OF THE YEMENITE JEWS AS AN EXPRESSION OF CULTURAL DEMARCATION BETWEEN THE SEXES MARILYN HERMAN JEWISH men and women in Yemen are portrayed in the sociological and anthropo logical literature as having lived in separate conceptual and spatial worlds. As a result, two very separate bodies of song existed, one pertaining to men and the other to women. In this paper, I show how the culturally defined demarcation be tween the sexes is reflected and epitomized in the music of the Jews who lived in Yemen. i The key to this separation lies in the fact that women were banned from the synagogue altogether. This exclusion is not prescribed by Jewish law, and there is no precedent for it in the Bible or other Jewish literature or communities. The reason given for women being banned from the synagogue in Yemen was the fear that they might be menstruating. Dead Sea Scrolls deciphered: esoteric code reveals ancient priestly calendar 21 February 2018, by Charlotte Hempel here. These fragments, at most, contain parts of three words and often fewer. The text contains parts of a calendar based on a 364-day solar year, which has the benefit of the annual festivals never falling on a Saturday, which would have clashed with the Jewish Sabbath. This calendar is promoted in a number of Dead Sea Scrolls and was probably used instead of the more widespread approximately 354-day lunar calendar. The Hebrew Bible does not present a clear and complete calendar, which is why ancient Jewish groups debated the issue. The Babylonian calendar was luni-solar comprising 12 lunar months. HODSON Abstract: The announcement by the Huntington Library in September 1991 of its decision to open for unrestricted research its photographs of the Dead Sea Scrolls touched off a battle of wills between the library and the official team of scrolls editors, as well as a blitz of media publicity. The action was based on a commitment to the principle of intellectual freedom, but it must also be considered in light of the ethics of donor agreements and of access restrictions. The author relates the story of the events leading to the Huntington's move and its aftermath, and she analyzes the issues involved. About the author: Sara S. Hodson is curator of literary manuscripts at the Huntington Library. Her articles have appeared in Rare Books & Manuscripts Librarianship, Dictionary of Literary Biography Yearbook, and the Huntington Library Quarterly. Machiela NUMBER OF PAGES: xiv + 321 ii ABSTRACT My dissertation analyzes the passages related to the priesthood, cult, and temple in the Aramaic Scrolls from Qumran. The Aramaic Scrolls comprise roughly 15% of the manuscripts found in the Qumran caves, and testify to the presence of a flourishing Jewish Aramaic literary tradition dating to the early Hellenistic period (ca. late fourth to early second century BCE). Scholarship since the mid-2000s has increasingly understood these writings as a corpus of related literature on both literary and socio-historical grounds, and has emphasized their shared features, genres, and theological outlook. Roughly half of the Aramaic Scrolls display a strong interest in Israel’s priestly institutions: the priesthood, cult, and temple. That many of these compositions display such an interest has not gone unnoticed. To date, however, few scholars have analyzed the priestly passages in any given composition in light of the broader corpus, and no scholars have undertaken a comprehensive treatment of the priestly passages in the Aramaic Scrolls. -

Jewish American Women’s Writing: Dislodging Preconceptions by Challenging Expectations Judith Lewin Josh Lambert describes “a little experiment” that he does with his Jewish literature classes: “I ask them to take out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil…. I say, ‘Draw a Jew.’…. One of my favorite questions to ask first is this: ‘How many of you drew a woman?’ (Usually, it’s at most one or two…)” (paras.1-3). Since Lambert notes that “usually, it’s at most one or two,” the students’ inability to imagine a woman inhabiting the category “Jew” is worth dwelling upon.1 Why is it Jewish American women are invisible, inaudible, and insufficiently read? This essay proposes a curriculum that engages students to think broadly and fluidly about Jewish American women authors and the issues and themes in their fiction. Previous pedagogical essays on Jewish American women’s writing include two in sociology/women’s studies on identities (see Friedman and Rosenberg; Sigalow), Sheila Jelen’s in Shofar on Hebrew and Yiddish texts, and a special issue in MELUS 37:2 (Summer 2012) that include women’s literature but without gender as a focus. The aim of this essay, by contrast, is to introduce teachers of American literature to an array of texts written by American Jewish women that will engage critical reading, thinking and writing by contemporary college undergraduates. Two questions must be dealt with right away. First, how does one justify treating Jewish American women’s literature in isolation? Second, how does one challenge the expectations of what such a course entails? As Lambert demonstrated from his informal survey, Jewish women writers are doubly invisible, to Jewish literature as women and to 1 women’s literature as Jews. -

Exodus in the Dead Sea Scrolls Sidnie White Crawford The book of Exodus is a very important text among the Dead Sea Scrolls, especially in the collection found in the eleven caves in the vicinity of Khirbet Qumran (“the Qumran collection”). Because of the variety of texts and the fragmentary nature of the manuscripts, each text (or group of texts) will be treated individually. At the end of this essay, I will draw some conclusions concerning the status and use of Exodus in the Qumran collection. 1 Exodus Manuscripts Eighteen fragmentary manuscripts of the book of Exodus itself were found in caves 1, 2, and 4 at Qumran.1 The oldest, 4QExod-Levf, dates paleographi- cally to c. 250bce, while the latest, 4QExodk, dates between 30–135ce.2 The eighteen manuscripts between them cover parts of all the chapters of Exodus, beginning with 1:1–6 (4QExodb, 4QpaleoGen-Exodl) and ending with 40:8–27 1 D. Preface What is the Copper Scroll? Do the Dead Sea Scrolls contain lost books of the Bible? Did John the Baptist study with the people of Qumran? What is the Temple Scroll? What about DNA research and the scrolls? We have responded to scores of such questions on many occasions—while teaching graduate seminars and Hebrew courses at Brigham Young University, presenting papers at professional symposia, and speaking to various lay audiences. These settings are always positive experiences for us, particularly because they reveal that the general membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a deep interest in the scrolls and other writings from the ancient world. The nonbiblical Dead Sea Scrolls are of great import because they shed much light on the cultural, religious, and political position of some of the Jews who lived shortly before and during the time of Jesus Christ. -

The Dead Sea Scrolls JUDS 1611/RELS 1150 CRN: 16534 The Dead Sea scrolls have been rightly celebrated as changing our fundamental understanding of ancient Jewish and Christian history as well as the Bible. But what is in them, and why do they matter? In this course we will read through the most important scrolls in English translation and cover topics such as: authorship; historical context; religious practice; and scripture and its interpretation. The course will develop skills in analytical writing, close reading, and historical reasoning. This is a WRIT designated course.
