\ of Marquette University clipped three world records and tied another in two races at the 1932 NGAA Championships at Chicago. His performance was hailed as the greatest individual achievement since Charles Paddock broke the world refords for 100 and 220 yards in 1921, ., Metcalfe won: the 100 in 9,5, tying the accepted world n;iark and in the same race was clocked in 1,0. 2 for 100 meters, surpassing the world record. In the 220 his ti.me was 20. 5 and at 200 meters he was clocked in 20, 3, Both times bettered the world records. (Ed. note: Metcalfe 1s records were never submitted to the AA U for nitification and hence never went to the IAAF for q.pproval as world records, They were, however, accepted as NCAA Champ- ionship records. ) . This sensational performance by Metcalfe established him as a prime favorite td make the United ~tates Olympic team at the tryouts to be held in July. He overwhelmed h1s compe tition, winning the 100 by two yards from Don Bennett of Ohio State and the 220 .b.y six yards from Jimmy Johnson, of Illinois State Normal. . . . T, . More than 372 athletes from 88 colleges co1ripeted,in this meet which was won by Indiana Universit;y with 56 points. Six men did all th·e scorinp for the Hoosiers. Ohio State finished second with 49¾ points with Minnesota third with 392 • Marquette had 23¾ followed by · Michigan with 23, 1-owawith 21 and Illinois with 18½. It wa~ a high scoring bonanza for the · Midwest in general and the Big Ten in particular, , How~ver, the California colleges passed Ul) the meet that year. - , ·; , , The United States Olympic Committee had ,designated th~ meet as a semi-final tryout for the Olympic team. Thus, many athletes competed wh6 were ineligible for NCAA_~coring. In addition, two Olympic events, the 400-meter ' hurdks and the hop-step-jump, were on the program for Olympic tryout purposes only. Willis Ward, a Michigan freshman, cleared · 6'7¼", but the championship went to Bert Nelson of Sutler with a··leap of 6 1 5£",The only qther double winner besides · Mctc~lfe was Lambert Redd of Bradley, who as an NCAA eligible, · won the broad jump ', ,and ,also to.ok first in the non-scoring hop-step ; jump. · . 1 of Ohio State, winner of both hurdles in 1931, retained only his low hurdles championship. The Buckeye hurdler defeated of Iowa ,in 22. 7, breaking the world record. Saling came back with a world record of 14. 1 in the highs as Keller

slipped to third after a bad start, John Black, Keller's I teammate, finished second. . ' Henry Brocksmith of Indiana attempted the difficult mile ,and two mile double and ' f' ·s eel second in both. He.was b~aten by Glenn Cunningham pf Kansas in .the mile in a sensational race, Cunningham's time of 4:11.1 'was the fastest ou,tdoor mile ev.er run in America and bettered th~ championship record by more than six seconds. ' , In the two mile, Brocksmith raced neck and neck over the last 1,000 yards with Charles Shugt!rt of Miami (Ohio), only to lose by 1½ yards: Shugert's time of 9:1§, 7 displaced Harold Manning's 9:18.1 championship mark mad ,e in 193~. ' One of the two individual winners for Indiana was Ch~rles Hornbostel, wµo scored a smashing victory over of Oklahoma, an NCAA ineligible, with a 1:53, 5 clocking, 1 equal the meet record, Br e Beecher, who cleared 13.'10'' in the pole vault, was the other · first place winner for India ~a. Beecher won the championship although he finished .in a tie with Irving Seeley, an Illinois freshman who was ineligible • Indiana's other three scor 'ers were . , Noble Biddinger and Charlie Crouch, Fuqua finished second jn tfie 44Q behind · Alex Wilson of Notre Dame, who was expected to represent Canada in the coming' Olympics, Biddinger's toss of 154'½" was good for second place in the hammer won by Grant McDougall of Pennsylvania, one of the East's few entries in the meet, Crouch tried an ambit\OUS triple, finishing fifth in the low hurdles and brond ·jump and leaping 43 ~4t,"for sixth in the non - scoring hop-step-jump. . 100, Metcalfe (Marquette) 9, 5 (10. 2 100 meters); 2.
