That probably sums up the Championship challenge in 2017, but our convincing win against Wiltshire in the final match will have given Steve Leach tremendous satisfaction. Proof, if he needed it, that we do have the wherewithal to top the Championship very soon. Availability was once again a problem - and many thanks to all the players who made themselves available. I sincerely wish more of the county’s top performers would do likewise. Our away fixtures looked very exciting on paper - Wales, Devon and Cornwall - but we had rain on all of these trips - which had a disastrous effect on my retirement fund! Nevertheless, our hardcore supporters had a lot of fun and I thank them for their continued support. In November, we lost two players from our Championship team of 1973, Brian Perry and Eric Marsh, both of whom were personal friends who gave 120 per cent effort for their county. My condolences to their respective families and friends. Meanwhile, your committee continue to plan for next season. I understand that the cricket committee have had one or two ‘professionals’ offering their services to play for us. Rest assured, your committee will select with due care and attention to what we require. De Peiza delivered this sentiment during The Sunday Roast of the DLP, titled Estimates 2021-2022: DLP Responds. She made the argument that diversification of an economy is an exercise that is best undertaken when the economy is booming, and noted that there had not been a boom for a long time. She also acknowledged that in the last three years of the DLP administration in 2015, 2016 and 2017, there was growth but it was negligible. De Peiza explained that since January 2020, the DLP had framed a programme which was designed to enfranchise GETTING A TREAT!: With restrictions being in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Barbadian shoppers and Barbadians. In the absence of any Second XI cricket and the One Day Cup competition, the Bob Willis Trophy reports have been expanded to include a write up for each day’s play as well as the full scorecards. Sadly all fixtures were played behind closed doors so hopefully these extended reports will enable readers to get the feeling of actually being at the game! In addition, the Somerset Women’s team reports plus the Boys and Girls Pathway write ups are included in the first half of the book as they now come under the remit of Somerset CCC rather than the Somerset Cricket Board.

  • Sussex Newspaper's Mark Dunford Reports on the Vitality Blast Semi-Final at Edgbaston
Sussex Sharks vs. Worcestershire Rapids Vitality Blast, Final Edgbaston, Birmingham. Saturday 15th September 2018. Sussex Newspaper's Mark Dunford reports on the Vitality Blast semi-final at Edgbaston... It was all set up for a tight finish. But in the penultimate over of the Vitality Blast final, it all went wrong for Sussex. With 17 needed from the final two overs, the Rapids picked up a single off the first ball, but then Jofra Archer bowled an over-waist-high no ball, which went for four byes. The free hit was then dispatched for six. That left four to win and it was Ben Cox who smashed the winning runs off the next ball. It was a such a shame as the game was all set up for a thrilling finish with the game ebbing and flowing throughout. Worcestershire reached the final by beating Lancashire while Sussex comfortably beat Somerset to set up the first ever clash between these sides in a T20 match. Luke Wright won the toss and elected to bat, a formula which worked in the semi-final. Salt and Wright again opened the batting and it was the former who again got off to a flyer, hitting Wayne Parnell for two sixes in the second over, before being run out. It looked like an easy single, and Salt looked home, but Brett D'Oliveira's direct hit caught him off guard. Salt had passed the crease but had grounded nothing when the ball hit the stumps. Evans joined Wright and the pair looked at ease, picking up singles and the odd boundary.

  • Cricket Reports 2014
Cricket Reports 2014 1st XI Report by Coach Andy Barnard The 2014 season will be viewed as a little disappointing given the level of success achieved in 2013, but nevertheless the headline outcomes and achievements stand up to the level of recent years. The notable achievement of winning the Silk Trophy for the second successive year, away from home cannot be underestimated. Underlying our season was a long list of injuries that handicapped us more than at any other time since I have been in charge. We lost five front line seam bowlers (Barnard, Cooke, Carrasco, Cook and Durman) and therefore relied heavily on a small group of bowlers who did their best in the circumstances. When I think back to the season, we did incredibly well and overcame much throughout the summer term. The U15s advancement to the ESCA/ECB National Schools T20 Finals Day at Arundel in September was equally impressive and a great number of this squad consistently performed well above our expectations and deserve many congratulations. Perhaps the biggest dent to our development came when our promising Under-14s lost at the county semi-final stage of the Lord’s Taverners Trophy and will not now go on to represent Shropshire on the national stage in 2015. The upcoming tour to the UAE and South Africa will be crucial in trying to sustain the success of recent years but it will also prove useful in binding together two new squads to the forthcoming season. The introduction of U14 and U15 girls creates another fantastic opportunity within our sport to expand and develop.
