Welcome home Brother Chris Garcia, OFM Conv.

To my fellow parishioners, I want to thank you for the warm welcome during my home visit. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Br. Chris Garcia, OFM Conv. I was born and raised in Dana Point and have called St. Edward the Confessor my home for many years. My parents Doug and Mabel are active members of the parish having been married here 31 years ago. As for myself, I am a graduate of the parish school back in 2006, a graduate of JSerra in San Juan Capistrano in 2010, and graduated from St. Mary’s College of CA in 2014 with a BA in Theology & Religious Studies.

I am currently on home visit until Thursday, August 16th when I return to seminary. I am present after daily Mass either the 8:15am or 5:30pm each day if anyone wants to chat. You will also find me helping with Laura Schuberg and the youth ministry throughout the week. I thank you for the warm welcome and please continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and . et bonum.

18th Sunday in Page 4 Praising God for His Creation

At the World Day of Prayer in 2016, Francis centered our thoughts on God’s creation and reminded us to praise God for his “handiwork”. (Please copy the following web address into your internet browser to read the Pope’s remarks: http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/ en/messages/pont-messages/2016/documents/papa-francesco_20160901_messaggio-giornata-cura- creato.html).

Even from the pit of a fiery furnace, three young men cry out to God with praise for the splendor of creation. “Sun and moon, bless the Lord; Stars of heaven, bless the Lord, Every shower and dew…all you winds…you sea monsters and all water creatures…all you birds of the air…you beasts, wild and tame…all you mortals, bless the Lord praise and exalt him above all forever.…” (see Daniel 3).

St. Francis of Assisi also praised God for his creation in his Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon:

Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, Who is the day through whom You give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor, Of You Most High, he bears the likeness.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, In the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair… (read the full canticle at https://www.catholic.org/prayers/prayer.php?p=183).

The season of summer is the perfect time for us to echo theses praises from the scriptures and saints. When viewed with a contemplative heart, creations instills in us a spirit of awe and wonder. The precious and beautiful gift of creation is accompanied by an equal responsibility to care for it in the name of God. The book of Genesis makes clear that God has entrusted all of us his creation as a gift and a responsibility. While all of creation should be enjoyed and cared for, the human person, who alone is created in God’s divine image and likeness, requires special love and care.

May these summer days and nights be an occasion for us to enjoy, contemplate, and care for the incredible gift and responsibility of God’s handiwork.

Blest be the Lord! Rev. Brendan Manson Pastor

Out of respect for -- and the safety of -- our neighbors, please slow down and obey the speed limit. We are asking all parishioners to avoid parking or dropping off anyone in the neighborhoods surrounding the parish and, instead, to park only on our parish property. Beginning in August, the sign above will be displayed on the streets approaching St. Edward. Subsequently, all vehicles that park in the neighborhoods surrounding St. Edward will receive a reminder letter from Fr. Brendan asking for your cooperation.

Thank You!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, BUT THE STRUGGLE STILL CONTINUES!

I am Fr. Achilles Mayanja coming from Uganda, Africa, and I joined the minor seminary at the age of 13, and was ordained a priest on July 16th 1994. Currently I am the Parish priest of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Kansanga Catholic Church.

I started coming to St. Edwards in 2006. As a result of this fruitful relationship, we have accomplished a lot together in the renovation of Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala, the renovation of St. Kizito Primary School, the birth of St. Edward’s Health Center. And finally the birth of St. Edward’s Kindergarten.

I want to thank very much the former Pastor Fr. Steve Sallot and the current Pastor Fr. Brendan Manson for always welcoming me.

My hearty gratitude goes to all the parishioners of St. Edward the Confessor, the different prayer groups and all the families for your friendship and continued support of initiatives. All these things and more have made my Priestly Ministry a success. This has added a lot of value and is relevant to the people of God.

I am very happy to be invited here to share my accountability and new challenges facing our Health Center and School. It is here that your support is still very much necessary.

Peace, Fr. Achilles Mayanja Ever forward never backwards
