Philip Arnold (1699-1743)

** states widow Ann and given Philip's burial a few years before this makes Ann very likely as his widow, they also had a daughter called Ann.

Marriage - not Motcombe, Mere, Shaftesbury, Gillingham some researchers have this as Philip Arnold and Elizabeth Lanning. However they did not marry until 1736. A long time after 1726, even if James was born out of wedlock and there is no reference to this on his baptism. It is much more likely that the Philip who married Elizabeth Lanning was the one born in 1712 and who did not die in infancy.

Children of Philip (and Ann ?) Arnold at Motcombe - 1725 William (bu 1726), 1726 James (m 1747 Motcombe, Hester Crouch), 1728 Sarah (m 1761 Motcombe, Thomas Brickell), 1731 Thomas, 1736 Mary (m 1763 Motcombe, James Crouch), 1737 Philip, 1741 Ann (m 1760 Motcombe, Stephen Crouch), 1743 Philip and William (m 1761 Motcombe, Bethia Bugden).

John Arnold (bf 1658-1741)

* John Arnold was having children in Motcombe 1684 to 1693 and probably before. There are the only Arnolds noted as doing so at the time in Motcombe. Thomas also had called John and Elizabeth (and George after Elizabeth's father). However, as they were buried at about the same time John may in fact have been an older brother of Thomas'. Children if John and Elizabeth Arnold at Motcombe - ? Thomas, 1684 Elizabeth, 1687 Jane, ? Jasper (bu 1689), 1692 Mary, 1693 George

1695 will of George Leare of Motcombe. Daughter Eliz , Phillipa "my dear wife half of household goods", rest to George Arnold, grandson. Proved by oath Johanni Arnold, father of George Arnold, Infant.

Thomas Brine (bf 1663-1701)

* 1701 Holy Trinity - Mr Thomas Brine not buried at St Peters, so this is probably he, but one cannot be completely sure as the burial does not use the prefix 'Mr' as the status 'Mr' normally refers to a gentleman who would keep that title.

Children of Mr Thomas Brine at St Peters - 8/1681 William, 1682 Thomas (m 1700 St James Grace Sutton)*, 1684 Martha, 1694 William. * Thomas was having children Holy Trinity 1706 onwards.

Philip Brine (bf 1620-aft 1673)

* this point back is assumed from the will of John Bryne, tallow chandler of Shaftesbury in 1673 , which refers to his six children and brother Philip. Thomas who died 1701 is not listed and so Thomas could not have been his son and so I have assumed he would have been a son of Philip. I have further connected back to a possible prior generation of Thomas Brine of Shaftesbury recorded in 1641 and 1662 and who with the name, date and place location is a very possible grandfather of Thomas who died 1701. Either that or Thomas of 1641/62 was father of Thomas who died 1701.

1830 at Motcombe marriage of George Love of this parish and Martha Case of this parish both signed by 'x' witnessed by Henry Butt and Meshach Moore

Note - I had thought that Martha was the daughter of Hugh and Mary Case of Motcombe baptised in 1818. However the burial age and census info in fact matches with the baptism in 1809 of 'Martha daughter of Ann Case, 'iligitimate (sic)' at Holy Trinity. Hugh and Mary Case moved with daughter Martha to Chillington in Somerset are are there in the census in 1841/1851.

Ann Case (1788-1863)

1863 burial of 'Ann Lodge' of Alms House, Salisbury Street aged 75 Note - I think that the site of the old almhouse(s) is exactly where the current 'Chubbs' almhouse stands. The modern replacement was built in 1968 and is on the right side of the road as one leaves the town centre. In 1611 Matthew Chubb of Dorchester, gent, established an almhouse in Salisbury Street, Shaftesbury for sixteen women and this was 'on the right of the way' and used to be marked with a brass tablet.

Children of Ann Case at Holy Trinity - 1809 Martha. Note - no Shaftesbury bastardy records survive from this period.

Parents of Ann Case (missing baptism) Options for Case families having children in Shaftesbury 1780-1795 (bold showing name links between families of assumed line) - * Ann Case baptised 1777 at Holy Trinity to Abiah (Obiah) and Sarah married John Rolls at Motcombe in 1805 and was in the 1841 census aged 62 and buried Blandford 1848 aged 72 * Joseph - 1791 Joseph (St Peter) * William and Hannah (married 1778) - 1786 George (SP), 1789 Betty, 1792 Henry (HT) * John and Susanna (HT) - 1768 Charles, 1771 Fanny, 1774 Polly, 1776 John, 1780 Peter, 1781 Henry, 1785 Sarah, 1793 Rose, ? Susanna * Peter and Jane 'Cass' - 1772 Samuel (HT), 1791 Stephen (St James) * James and Sophia at Motcombe - 1780 (SP) James & William, 1783 Mary (SP), 1784 Jane (SP), 1786 James, 1789 Mary, 1793 James, 1793 Sophia, 1796 Rebecca, 1798 Carolina, 1800 Peter

In 1841 Ann and husband John Lodge are living next to Charles Case aged 25, William Case aged 65 and Henry Case aged 55. Charles was probably her nephew (son of brother Charles) and Henry was probably her brother.

Most likely - John and Susanna, because the names of their children almost all match with used by names used by Ann and her daughter Martha. Apparently Ann was not the only one of this family not to have a baptism recorded or to have taken a different name after baptism as Susanna who was buried in 1810 was not baptised. Also Ann who died in 1863 was born in Shaftesbury, not Motcombe and had an affiliation to Holy Trinity parish where she baptised her first child and where she was buried. Again this links to John and Susanna more than any of the other Case families. See also above the comment about the possible brother-in-law being a witness to marriage.

John Case (bf 1589-aft 1589) see will of Thomas Hanne als Case, whilst this John could have been the brother of Henry I assume it is his son because in 1594 only Henry shows in the Tudor subsidy list for Shaston. Either way they all seem to be from the same family and from a common unknown parent father of Thomas, Henry and John who does not appear to be in Shaston before 1569. The Hanne part of the name appears to end its usage after the early 18th century but it does appear to be the root of the Case family of Shaftesbury.

1662 Hearth Tax Shaston - Mr William Chamberlayn ij

Encyclopedia of British Writers: 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries By Alan Hager "William Chamberlayne was born in Shaftesbury, Dorsetshire, England to Peter Chamberlayne a doctor, and his wife. Little else is known of his early years except that he became a physician at Shaftesbury. Throughout his life he remained poor, and because of his poverty he was unable to associate with the literary elite of his time. In 1659 Chamberlayne published Pharonnida an epic or long poem of heroic deeds, much in the style of Sir Edmund Spencer's verse romances. Pharonnida tells the adventures of the hero Argalia and his love for the princess Pharonnida. Chamberlayne describes Argalia as a worthy lover but notes his love for Pharonnida is - like amorous vine when crawling o'er the weeds, it strives to twine, embraces with the elm, he stands; whilst she desires to bend but, like that love-sick tree, by greatness is denied The 19th century critic Thomas Campbell called the poem "one of the most interesting stories that was ever told in verse. The Greek writer Heliodorus' work Aethiopica was a significant influence on Chamberlayne's other major work, Love's Victory (1658) a tragicomedy.

Baptism record of Sarah Maria in 1827 it is noted that she is the 'base born daughter of Elizabeth Coalgate of Motcombe, Labourer'. However on her marriage she states that her father was Frederick, suggesting that the father died sometime between 11/1826 and 8/1827.

Jane is recorded as having been baptised at Frome in Somerset. * it was possible that Frederick could have been the one baptised in 1792 in Faversham, Kent to William and Elizabeth. However that Frederick was still alive when Elizabeth's will was proved in 1833, whilst Frederick above was almost certainly dead or missing by the time of Maria's baptism in August 1827 and the Frederick of Faversham married an Ann and was in the 1861 and 1871 census' in Faversham and died 1877.

Hester Crouch (1725-1790)

Hester Crouch - There is some question as to Hester's parentage. An IGI file states that it is James Crouch and Mary Arnold. Another researcher agrees with this. However there is no evidence to support this that I can find and no reference to either baptism or even marriage of James/Mary. However the following baptism record does exist - 14/9/1725 Hester Crouch to Stephen Crouch (of Maiden Bradley) at Horningsham, Wilts This Hester did not die in infancy and there is no other reference of an alternative marriage for her. This parish is not a very great distance from Motcombe and is a possibility. Looking at the children of James and Hester Arnold to see if there is a clue - James 1748, Edward 1751, Susanna 1755, Stephen 1758, Anna 1760, Mary 1763, William 1765, Elizabeth 1768. So both James, Mary and Stephen are all used as names and so this is inconclusive. The will of James Crouch of 1760 (which I believe is the one alleged to have married Mary Arnold) refers to cousins John, William and Richard Arnold. This relationship probably comes from the marriage of George Arnold to Jane Crouch (probably James' aunt) in 1739. Also refers to brother John Crouch. But no reference to James Arnold or a daughter called Hester. Given the confirmed baptism and it's date, fact that Maiden Bradley is only two or three parishes away from Motcombe and that the name Stephen was used for one of his children I have gone with that rather than James and Mary for which there is no evidence at all. One added connection to Stephen and Rachel Crouch is that a Stephen Crouch married Ann Arnold in 1760 in Motcombe. No Stephen Crouch was baptised at Motcombe who would be the right age and so this could well be Hester's brother Stephen who was baptised 1734 (above). It is also worth noting that a George crouch witnessed the marriage of Hester's daughter Elizabeth Arnold in 1793 - was this a cousin or uncle?

James Haviland (1553-1613)

From Douglas Potts, ([email protected]), "Potts/Godwin10", Ancestry.com Early in life, James settled at Salisbury, Wiltshire, where his kinsmen, the Webbs, were merchants of great repute - and probably started his career under their patronage. His name appears in the Church Warden's account of St. Edmunds and St. Thomas' from 1587/8 until 1609. Elected to the Corporation (35 Elizabeth) 1592-93; Alderman (44 Elizabeth) 1601/2; Mayor of Salisbury (last year of Elizabeth) and (first year of James), 1602-03; last mentioned in the Municipal Ledger as being present at a meeting of the Corporation in 1613. He married Thomassine (who might have been his second wife) as all but the eldest child (who might have been by a former wife) were baptized at St. Thomas', Salisbury. Quoted of Alfred Haviland in a letter to Frederick Haviland (of R.B. Haviland & Sons) dated 16 Nov 1893: "Soon after I left Salisbury, I received a Wiltshire paper in which there was a report of the presentation of a new gold Chain to the Mayor, who in his speech returning thanks, alluded to James Haviland, who was Mayor of Salisbury in 1603. At the time of Queen Elizabeth's death, and James I's accession, he also mentioned how when James in the same year paid a visit to Lord Pembroke at Wilton House near Salisbury, James Haviland and the corporation presented the King with 20 Marks in a silver-gilt Goblet, an equal sum in a purse to the Queen, 10 Marks to their son, and a fat Ox worth 8 Marks to their host, Lord Pembroke. This James was son of Christopher Haviland, Mayor of Poole in 1659 and grandson of James de Havilland, who was born in Guernsey and first settled in Guernsey."

James Haviland (1440-1502)

From http://www.boroughofpoole.com James De Havilland - Served as Mayor - 1494, 1498 and 1502 The Richest Trader In Town The following information is taken from a 'Chronicle of the Ancient and Noble family of De Havilland' ( now famous within the aircraft industry) (originally Haverland in Normandy) The following incident in the War of the Roses helped raise Poole from a place of small importance to be a wealthy and flourishing port. Towards the end of the reign of Edward IV, Queen Margaret of Anjou, wife of King Henry VI, crossed over to France in order to obtain the aid of King Louis XI to regain the throne from Edward IV. She was unsuccessful but negotiated with a Norman nobleman Peter de Breze the Compte ( Count) de Manlevier, and as a reward for his help against the Yorkists, the Channel Islands were given to him. However the Jersey inhabitants did not want to be ruled by the French Military and revolted, so Edward IV sent Sir Richard Harlistan, Vice Admiral of England, with a squadron of ships to Guernsey, to rally the loyalists of both islands and attack and retake Jersey for the English. As a reward, the King awarded exclusive rights to 16 of the most prominent volunteers who assisted the monarch. He did so by giving them special trading privileges in either , Dartmouth or Poole, effective from the 14th March 1469. Thomas de Havilland was one of the 16 and was awarded trading privileges in Poole, and he sent his second son, James, and his Guernsey born wife, Helena, to Poole. James soon became the richest trader in the town, with links to Normandy and Spain. He was Mayor of Poole in 1494, 1498 and 1502. James built the north aisle of old St James Church at his own expense. This was called either Our Lady Aisle or The Havilland Aisle. James' eldest son Richard, was Mayor 3 times, and another son, William, was Mayor twice. In later years, this link to the Channel Islands was to prove invaluable to Poole. The De Havilland family made a long and influential impact upon Poole. The Arms of the family had the motto God is our strongest tower. Mary was reported as 84 on her burial in 1844 suggesting a birth in 1760. But in the 1841 census she is recorded as 75 suggesting a birth of 1765/1766. However ages of those over 20 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years and so the exact date is difficult to ascertain from that census making the 1760 date more likely.

* I have assumed the line above as Robert and Mary Wareham used the names John and Elizabeth for names for their children.

Children of Robert and Mary Wareham at Iwerne Courtney - Susannah, John, Jane, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Benjamin.

1796 Dorset Militia List Iwerne Courtney list of men liable to serve James Hayward, labourer, 5' 7" William Hayward jun, labourer, 5' William Hayward sen, labourer, 5' 6"

Children of John and Elizabeth Hayward at Shroton - 1764 Susannah*, 1766 Anne, ? Mary, 1769 George, 1773 Thomas and 1774 James. note - It is quite possible that Mary Hayward was in fact baptised as Susannah and may have used a second name later in life. This is because of the later connection to the name of her child Susannah Wareham.

James Hayward (1717-1771)

Children of James and Susannah Hayward at Shroton - 1740 John, 1744 Robert (m 1762 Mary Painter) & Susannah, 1747 Joshua, 1749 James, 1751 Elizabeth, 1753 Zacharius, 1756 Timothy & 1759 William.

Before 1713 there are no Hayward references in Iwerne Courtney until 1661 Nicholas Hayward baptised son of George.

Children of Thomas and Susannah Hibbard at Mere - 1690 Mary, 1695 John, 1700 Thomas, 1706 Elizabeth, 1710 Mary

* this is not proven however it is probable that there is a connection given the fact that Thomas had a son called John and the will of Henry Hibbard below states that he had brothers John and Thomas and a John Hibbard was baptised to John and Charity in 1651.

John Hibbard (bf 1632-1695)

It could be John, but the best probability (in the absence of a baptism at Marnhull) is Thomas as John and Deborah called one of their children Thomas and that name would not appear to have come through John Hiscock's line.

A dispute has arisen as to their place of settlement, as Biles is said to have promised to discharge Fontmell Magna of its responsbility for the Hiscockes and their child. However, the court declares Fontmell Magna responsible, and orders Benjamin Hiscocke's father to give security against future maintenance of his grandchild by the parish, unless he show cause why not."

Mary Lodder (c 1741-1810)

Baptism of Mary Morgan's (nee Lodder) daughter Lucy in 1782 at the Catholic Church at Marnhull - Martin Lodder and Jane Lodder, both of Stour Provost, were named as godparents.

Children of Thomas and Mary Morgan - 1762 Elizabeth, 1764 Mary, 1765 James (m 1789 Mary Watts), 1767 John, 1782 Lucy (m 1808 John Stainer).

* note that this could be Mary baptised to Gilbert and Edith Lodder in 1732. However given the baptism reference of Lucy Morgan of 1782 (see Morgan) it is clear that this Lucy was the child of this Mary Lodder (given parent names and Lodder godparents) even though there is a large gap between their previous child Mary who was born before 1769. That being the case it is highly unlikely that Mary who married in 1761 to Thomas Morgan was born before about 1740 if she was still having children in 1782. Unless this was a really extreme example of a late birth I believe it more likely that this Mary was the child of John and Mary Lodder however I have no baptism record to completely prove this. But in support of this - 1) John and Mary married in March 1741 however the first child recorded on baptisms is Matthew in July 1743. This is possible of course but it is also likely that because they seem to have had one child a year after that date and until Mary died in 1747 that they'd had at least one previous child between March 1741 and 1743. 2) Thomas and Mary Morgan never used the names Gilbert or Edith for any of their children but they did use the names John and Mary. 3) There is a baptism record for a son named after the father - John in 1746, however no record of them having a female child. The chances are that if they had 4 sons that somewhere along the line they had a daughter and the probability is that they would have used the name Mary.

The English Catholic Nonjurors of 1715 'being a summary of the register of their estates' by Estcourt and Payne Page 43 - Gilbert Lodder, of Stour Provost, blacksmith - house for life. also listed - Jeffrey Lodder, yeoman of Stour Provost Martin Lodder, yeoman of Stour Provost William Lodder, yeoman of Stour Provost

Children of Gilbert and Mary Lodder - 1706 Margaret, 1709 Elizabeth, 1711 ?, 1717 John (m 1741 SP, Mary Holly nee ?), ? Gilbert (m Mary), 1717 James.

* Prior to Gilbert Lodder partly courtesy of research to be found at - http://fifeshireirelands.familytreeguide.com However whilst that website attributes Gilbert's father as being a Gilbert Lodder I do not believe there is any evidence of a prior Gilbert having existed and indeed there is no burial after 1702 of a Gilbert in Stour Provost. Far more likely is the John Lodder buried 1715 as Gilbert did have a son baptised John. As he also had a daughter Elizabeth I have guessed at a connection to the 1706 burial of Elizabeth Lodder as well.

1690 administration of John Lodder refers to daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Elnor and wife Mary

1690 will of John Lodder of Stour Provost Refers to wife Mary, daughter Elizabeth wife of Matthew Snook. No sons.

1688 administration of William Lodder of Stour Provost - refers to brother John (note - there is no evidence of a father called William but this fits with the line above - unless John is the one that died 1690 rather the one buried in 1715).

1685 administration of Jeffrey Lodder Yeoman of Stour Provost, refers to wife Mary - countersigned by John Lodder.

Homes of Family Names of Great Britain, HB Guppy, 1890 Peculiar names (mostly confined to Dorset) - Lodder

Lodder from http://www.thevoid.plus.com/genlod.htm Not very inspiring but the name LODDER derives from "Beggar", or "loader, carrier"; or, "dweller at the drain." In Dorset, which this research's LODDERs originate from may be named after stream called Lodre by the Celts. Lodders seem to have originated in Hanford in Dorset in the C12th. They were then recorded in Shillingstone (across the ford) in the C15th & C16th. but the earliest records which can be linked start about 1600. They spread out into various areas - they were mainly recusant Catholics and moved with employment with the landed Catholic families of which there were 3 wealthy ones and several minor ones in Dorset.

Catholicism in Shaftesbury by Rev E Jeanneau, 1966 "From the time of the Reformation one could always find in the neighbourhood of Shaftesbury, priests faithful to the See of Peter, to baptise children, officiate at weddings privately, and celebrate Mass. They were either private chaplains to the Arundels of Wardour in the different houses they lived in, or priests in charge of Nash Court in Marnhull. In any case, they came under the jurisdiction of the Vicars Apostolic of the West Country. There were Mass centres in Marnhull, Stour Provost, and Wardour …" Lodge family

* 1767 burial of 'Mrs Lush' only possible record in Shaftesbury, assuming she was buried Shaftesbury. Does not seem connected with any other Lush family. Although her husband was buried elsewhere in Shaftesbury, Catherine may have chosen to be buried in her parish of origin and her husband in his. This is unusual. The prefix 'Mrs' is normally reserved for someone of gentry.

Note - the only baptism of a William Lush in or near Shaftesbury that fits is the one - 1701 son of John. No such baptism exists in St Peters. However a note of caution should noted because John's will of 1711 only refers to sons Richard and Thomas but not William. However neither does it refer to son John who I can also find no burial record of and who I believe married Mary Dollin at Motcombe in 1721. William Lush's will of 1719 (see below) refers to John who died in 1711 and John's son Richard but not Thomas or John. Another concern is that if this William was born 1701 he would have been only 14 years old in 1715 but evidence in favour of this connection is the William who married 1715 used the names John and Ann for his children (possible parents) and Susannah (possible sister baptised at the same time as him in 1701). It should also be noted that both of Williams parents had died by 1715 and so may have made it necessary to marry young.

1769 removal order from Stour Provost to Shaftesbury St Peter From the overseers of the poor of St Peter's, Shaftesbury to those of Stour Provost confirming that the following were their inhabitants - 11/9/1769. Settlement certificate in Shaftesbury St Peters parish dated 9/10/1769. Thomas and Mary Morgan and children - Elizabeth aged 7, Mary 5, James 4* and John 1 1/2. ** note - under the old poor law a resettlement took place of poor families from one parish where they currently lived to the one where the male adult was previously settled. On marriage the wife would take the husband's settlement. It is clear in this case that whilst at Stour Provost the parish overseers of Shaftesbury S Peter confirmed that Thomas Morgan and his family belonged to them and this is where the family resettled. Given that they were though back in Stour provost by 1782 they were evidently no longer bound to the overseers. But in 1783 Thomas again appears to be at Shaftesbury where wife Mary appears to have been buried in 1810. * James Morgan was having children in Shaftesbury Holy Trinity - Thomas 1791 and Rose 1792 - very probably, given the name Thomas, this was the son of Thomas and Mary mentioned in the above removal order and hence Lucy's brother. James Morgan married Mary Watts, widow, at Holy Trinity in 1789.

We know that a James Small was George Wareham's father because this is recorded on George's marriage record at Iwerne Courtney in 1847. George was baptised 1825. There is only a small doubt as to whether this is the same James Small.

Elizabeth Tapper (1765-1829)

Children of Thomas and Elizabeth Hurdle at Shroton - 1785 Jane, 1788 Elizabeth, 1791 Maria (bu 1791), 1793 Mary (m 1812 IC, Joseph Russell), 1796 Thomas (m Mary Ann), 1801 Samuel, 1803 Henry, 1806 James ? William (m ? Sutton Waldron, Henrietta Tuffin).

1784 marriage at Iwerne Courtney Thomas Hurdle of this parish and Elizabeth Tapper of this parish, by banns. Thomas signed his name and Elizabeth who signed with her mark 'x'. Married by banns. Witnessed by Tho Toppins and Charles Andrews. 1765 missing baptism - see below for the information about the will of Thomas Tuffin, Elizabeth's brother-in-law, that links Elizabeth to James and Susannah Tapper even though at this time a baptism record cannot be found -

The will of Thomas Tuffin (see below) refers to the children of his late brother in law Thomas Hurdle. Thomas Hurdle had died in 1810 and had married Elizabeth Tapper at Iwerne Courtney in 1784, she died 1829 aged 63. Thomas Tuffin married Mary Tapper in 1792 at Sutton Waldron, Dorset. Mary was born in 1771 (she was 70 in the 1841 census). Therefore Mary and Elizabeth Tapper were sisters. In the will Thomas Tuffin also refers to the children of his brother-in-law William Tapper. Therefore William was brother to Elizabeth and Mary. The only William Tapper in the area at that time having children (plural) was the son of a James Tapper and Susannah. He was born 1778, married 1808 at Iwerne Courtney to Hester Bolwell and died 1860 aged 82, buried East Orchard (he left a will in 1858). William's first son, James was born 1810 in East Orchard. The Tuffin will also refers to sister in law Susannah Lockyer's children. Susannah Tapper married Joseph Lockyer in Sutton Waldron in 1789. The name Susannah almost certainly confirms the link to James and Susannah Tapper. William Tapper is mentioned as executor to James Tapper's will of 1808 where James left everything to his wife and William's mother Susannah. Thomas Tuffin is a witness to the 1812 marriage of Mary Hurdle (daughter of Elizabeth Tapper).

James Tapper (1743-1808)

1832 burial of 'Saray Tapper' of East Orchard at Iwerne Minster is most probably Susannah given the age and location. There was no other Tapper family of EO that match.

1808 administration of James Tapper 13th June 1808 "Susannah Tapper of East Orchard … the lawful widow of James Tapper late of the same place, labourer, was sworn well and faithfully to administer all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said James Tapper deceased also to exhibit a time and perfect inventory thereof into the Registry of the Court of the Bishop of Bristol and to render a just account thereon … value to the sum of £300." William Tapper (probably James' son ) signed with his seal and Susannah Tapper, widow signed with her mark 'x' and seal.
