Nuss, hl.. Karsholt, O. 6: Meyer. hl.: A taxonomic revision of the Scopariinae from the Ent. Sean hlacaronesian Region (Lepidoptera: Pyraloidea: Crambidae). En!. scaiid. 28: 509-55 1. Copenhagen, Denniark. January 1998. ISSN 0013-871 l. Sixteen scopariine species and tu'o subspecies, of which five are undescribed, occur on the archipriagos of the Azores, bladeira, the Canary 1s.. and the Cape Verde 1s. Four new species, Scopcirin cat-~dlioisp. n., Eirdotiin shnfferi sp. n., E. pnninrigirsrn sp. n., E. getnitiojkiiosn sp. n.. and one new subspecies Eiidotiia litieoln dorcih ssp. n., are described. Seven species are transferred to the genus Eitelotiici Billberg: E. itirerlitienlis (Warren, 1905) comb. n., E. Iicteitsnlis (Hairnpson, 1907) comb. n., E. rrielniiogrciphn (Hampson, 1907) comh. n., E. stetio- r(i (Wollaston. 1858) comb. n., E. scorielln (Wollaston, 1858) cornb. n., E. lindbergalis (Viet- te, 1958) conib. n.. and E. decorelln (Stainton, 1859) coiiib. n. The status of Eiidonin litieoln rcifirellcr (Chrctien. 1908) stat. n. is chanzed from species to subspecies. Eiidonin ciecorello (Stainton. 1859) comb. n.. sp. rev., forinerly regarded as synonym of E. srenorci, is confirmed as a valid species. Five new junior synonyms of Eiidoiiia species are given: Scopnria coeriile- oriticro Hampson, 19 17 syn. n. of Eiidotiin litieoln rnfirelln, Scopnrin wollnsrotii Bethune- Baker, 1894 sy.n. of Eiidotiin scorielln, Scoparici tiinderetisis Rebel, 1939 syn. n. of Eiido- riia clcjcoreila, Scopcirio irripririlk Dyar. 1929 syn. n. of Eiidoriin nrigiisten, and Scopnrin viresceris Rebel, 1896 syn. n. of Eirdotiin lineoln. Eisht lectotypes are designated. The taxo- noiiiic and choroiogical results indicate that the colonisation of the archipela, oos took place by passive dispersa1 on the ocean surface currents and winds. Each archipela_oohas endemic scopariine species and the number of endeinic species iiicreases in proportion to growing dis- tance froni the continents. The ancestors of the Azorean Scoporin species were of nearctic orisin, whiie the species of Madeira and the Canary 1s. shou aftinities to Europe and north- ern Africa. except that E. scorielln from Madeira 1s. seems to be of nearctic origin. E. hd- Dergcilis from the Cape Verde Archipelago show similaritiec to E. liwola, E. pnnicirigiisra and E. gr/~iiiiofie.virosnfroni the Canary 1s. The successful colonisation of oceanic islands by Scopiiiiinac seeins to be correiated tvith the prerequisites: dispersai abiiity. adaptation to a huiiiid cliniate. and niosses and lichens as larva! food. 11.
