Simply put, Rovering is “a brotherhood of open air and service.” In concept, Rovering was originally intended to be the final stage in Scouting for youths who came up through Wolf Cubs and Scouts. When a Scout reached age 17, he would transition from his Scout Troop to a Rover Crew of young adults. A Rover Scout could then further his training in citizenship by learning new skills to help him focus on a meaningful career while at the same time rendering service to the community. In a practical sense, Rovers get to do a lot of fun things, most of which happen outdoors. We get to play the same game of Scouting that kids get to do. We camp and hike. We learn any manner of outdoor skills, including pioneering, signaling, astronomy, and animal tracking, to name a few. We learn things in patrols just as the kids do. We also render service to the community at large via projects designed by the Rovers themselves. Some who join will also (or eventually) be Scouters, and the fun and adventure will make them better leaders. Others join simply to be a Scout, and that’s fine, too. The backbone of our program is the book called Scouting for Boys, written by the founder of the Scouting movement, Lord Robert Baden-Powell. It is a must-read for anyone who is lured by the idea of Rovering. If you were a Scout as a youth, it will give you an idea of what the movement was like when it was young.

    Scouts in ACTion Australian Capital Territory Branch November 2014 Wiggles Moot By Ben Muller, Moot Chief Over the last weekend in October Murrumbidgee Rover Crew played host to 106 Rovers at Camp Cottermouth for the Wiggles Moot (not officially endorsed by the Wiggles). A Moot is a Rover camp run by Rovers for Rovers with activities set around a theme, in this case The Wiggles. Rovers from the ACT, NSW, SA, QLD, VIC and overseas converged on the capital for a weekend of fun activities encompassing the five areas of development; spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, and social as well as a service activity undertaken by all participants. This is the first time a Moot has been run in the ACT in almost 3 years and with this one being such a success we hope to have many more to come! For a full report on the event or any additional information please email [email protected] From the Chief Spending time at Camp Cottermouth is always a pleasure but today was exceptionally not just pleasant but inspiring. I saw the Wiggles Moot in action having over 100 Rovers from all over Australia. I might add that the game of charades will never be the same for me again! Ben Muller and his Murrumbidgee Rover Crew team did a tremendous job in planning, running and documenting such a major event. Calling in on the Joey, Cub and Scout training sessions also allowed me to spend time with passionate adults who are keen to discover the fun, excitement and importance of being prepared for their role in Scouting.

    The following contains highlights of Scouting history in our council area, summarized decade by decade, and representing the first 90 years of the Boy Scouts of America: 1910-2000. THE BEGINNING: The 1910's The genesis of Scouting in the United States began with the publication of Lord Baden-Powell's manual, "Scouting for Boys," in March of 1908. The manual quickly made the transatlantic crossing, and by late spring Scouting units began popping up. While no exact records were kept in the early days, Troops were organized in Ft. Leavenworth, Salina, and Pawhuska, Oklahoma before William D. Boyce filed incorporation papers on February 8, 1910. Early promoters of the Scouting program were the leaders of the YMCA and some Episcopal priests. The first unit in Wichita was organized in 1912 by the YMCA with W. K. Leask, the Executive Director, as Scoutmaster. Troop 3 was organized at St. Paul's Methodist church in 13th and N. Lawrence Road (Broadway). Other early sponsors included College Hill Methodist Church, Plymouth Congregational, Central Christian Church, Riverside Group of Citizens, Grace Presbyterian Church, and First Methodist Church. In the spring of 1917, Fred Williams was made the chairman of the committee to contact the national organization to determine the procedure for organizing a council. In early 1918 the Wichita Rotary Club started to work on a three-year fund drive to raise $12,000 to organize a council. They raised $15,000 in one day. The organization meeting was held at the Wichita Club on March 11, with Marcellus M. Murdock, publisher of the Eagle, presiding.

The Lone Scout Friend or Counselor requires both Youth Protection Training and Position Specific Training. a. For the Lone Cub Scout Counselor training includes Youth Protection Training, Den Leader Specific Training. BALOO training is recommended if the leader is to take the scout camping. b. For the Lone Scout Counselor training includes Youth Protection Training and Scoutmaster Specific Training. The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is recommended. 5. The advancement requirements remain the same but can be modified to the scout’s situation with prior approval by the council. 6.
