APRIL 14, 2019 | PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION 9 DIOCESE OF RAPID CITY

OFFICE OF BISHOP

April 12, 2019

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, During Holy Week, the Gospel readings come alive as we gather to celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The readings remind us of our special connection to the land where this great story unfolded. Since the time of St. Paul, who urged his missionary churches not to forget the needs of the Church in Jerusalem, Christians worldwide have accepted the responsibility to support the land where Jesus walked. It has never been easy to be a Christian in the Holy Land, and they are facing unique hardships during these challenging times in the Middle East. News reports detail the wars, unrest and instability in the news –circumstances which are particularly hard on these Christians, whose ancestors were among those who first believed and lived the Christian faith. Pope Francis has asked the Church to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians continue to live, work and pray in the Holy Land. The Collection is a way for us to express our solidarity with Christians in the Holy Land. A donation is a way to make a real difference in their lives, as well as to help preserve churches and the many sacred shrines. Last year’s Collection supported twenty-nine parishes, four orphanages, three academic institutions. It kept schools open for over 10,000 pre-K through 12 th -grade students. It supported 120 men preparing to be priests or brothers, helped rehabilitate 80 homes for Christian families, provided senior care facilities in Bethlehem and Nazareth, created 1,500 jobs in the Holy Land for Christians and preserved fifty-four shrines connected with the life of Jesus and the prophets. Our Diocese will support Christians in the Holy Land by participating in the Good Friday Collection on April 19 , as requested by Pope Francis. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help carry the cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy Land. Thank you for supporting this collection and for your prayers for our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Please be generous! May God bless you abundantly and may the love that the Lord poured out for each of us on the cross fill our hearts with mercy and compassion for all of His children as we reflect on His Passion this Good Friday. Sincerely in the love of Christ,

Most Rev. Robert D. Gruss Bishop of Rapid City
