It is a capstone of the year, but at the same time a milestone of a long road, a road we have only begun to travel: the road of the New Evangelization.” —from the Foreword by Scott Hahn On June 29, 2013 Pope Francis issued his first papal letter reflecting on the nature of belief and the need to renew our faith for a bright future of charity and love for all. “The light of Faith: this is how the Church’s tradition speaks of the great gift brought by Jesus,” Pope Francis writes. “In John’s Gospel, Christ says of himself: ‘I have come as light Image | TR | 978-0-8041-8585-1 | 96pp. into the world, that whoever believes in me $9.99/$11.99 Can. | Exam Copy: $3.00 may not remain in darkness.’” Here is an illuminating work inviting all to lead a more spiritual and faith-based life, a reminder that ADOPTION NOTES with faith comes service, and with service to others and to God comes heaven on earth. Themes: Canon & Ecclesiastical Law; Theology Alternative Formats: About the Author: Pope Francis POPE FRANCIS is the first Latin American to be elected to the chair of Peter. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was ordained as a priest in 1969. He served as head of the Society of Jesus in Argentina from 1973 to 1979. In 1998 he became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and in 2001 a cardinal. Following the resignation of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, February 28, 2013, the conclave elected Bergoglio, who chose the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. 2 To order examination copies online, go to www.randomhouse.com/academic/examcopy Excerpt from Lumen Fidei 1. The light of Faith: this is how the Church’s tradition speaks of the great gift brought by Jesus. In John’s Gospel, Christ says of himself: “I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness” (Jn 12:46). Saint Paul uses the same image: “God who said ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts” (2 Cor 4:6). The pagan world, which hungered for light, had seen the growth of the cult of the sun god, Sol Invictus, invoked each day at sunrise. Yet though the sun was born anew each morning, it was clearly incapable of casting its light on all of human existence. The sun does not illumine all reality; its rays cannot penetrate to the shadow of death, the place where men’s eyes are closed to its light. “No one —Saint Justin Martyr writes—has ever been ready to die for his faith in the sun.”1 Conscious of the immense horizon which their faith opened before them, Christians invoked Jesus as the true sun “whose rays bestow life.”2 To Martha, weeping for the death of her brother Lazarus, Jesus said: “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” (Jn 11:40). Those who believe, see; they see with a light that illumines their entire journey, for it comes from the risen Christ, the morning star which never sets. 1 Dialogus cum Tryphone Iudaeo, 121, 2: PG 6, 758. 2 Clementof Alexandria, Protrepticus, IX: PG 8, 195. They both sought to build bridges among Catholicism, Judaism, and the world at large. On Heaven and Earth, originally published in Argentina in 2010, brings together a series of these conversations where both men talked about various theological and worldly issues, including God, fundamentalism, atheism, abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, and globalization. “Whether or not they agree with everything that is said, readers of all religious back- grounds will be impressed by the substance and frankness of these conversations between Image | HC | 978-0-7704-3506-6 | 256pp. Cardinal Bergoglio and Rabbi Skorka. D. THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY 733381 ASTOR, LENOX AND TILDEN FOUNDATIONS R 1916 L INTRODUCTION. The first quarter of a century has passed since the real work of pioneer life began in Faulk county—the work of transforming the wild, unbroken prairie, the home of the buffalo, the wolf and the wild and uncivilized red man—of blotting out the well worn Indian trail, extending from the eastern to the western boundary of the country. A work that means so much for us, that has been carried forward with such telling results, as the years go by, shall ever remain an enduring foundation upon which our future social, political, intellectual and moral greatness must stand, demanding a more enduring record than legend or story—Facts well authenticated, facts from the well stored memory, from brief records placed in historical form, before the ruthless hand of Time removes the heroic band from our midst. For the accomplishment of such a work is this History of Faulk County written. And to the men and women who composed that heroic band, who left home, with all its social surroundings that enter so largely into the present life, and builded greater than they knew in laying the foundation for a more liberal, broader and higher education and a nobler manhood and womanhood, is this work dedicated.
