The 63Rd Sydney Film Festival Announces Official Competition
MEDIA RELEASE EMBARGOED UNTIL 8:30PM SUNDAY 19 JUNE 2016 THE 63rd SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES: OFFICIAL COMPETITION WINNER Aquarius, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, was tonight awarded Sydney Film Festival’s prestigious Sydney Film Prize, from a selection of 12 Official Competition films, at the Festival’s Closing Night Gala. The $63,000 cash prize, now in its ninth year, is awarded for a film’s ‘emotional power and resonance; audaciousness, cutting-edge, courageousness; and capacity to go beyond the usual treatment of the subject matter’. “The jury was unanimous in its admiration of a strong competition this year, and wishes to award Kleber Mendonça Filho as the recipient of this year’s Sydney Film Prize, for his film Aquarius,” said Jury President Simon Field. “Aquarius is a compelling and relevant statement about contemporary Brazil, and the power of an individual standing up for what she believes,” he said. “Mendonça Filho has created a film that is both political and personal – witty, sexy and playful. A film of effortless verve and intelligence. At the heart of the film is Sonia Braga’s astonishing and brave performance of a fearless character, resisting pressures from her family, and the corporate world,” he said. Selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, Mendonça Filho’s magnificent second feature is about social justice, with an incredible role crafted for Sonia Braga, thirty years after Kiss of the Spider Woman first brought her international acclaim. The story unfolds across three chapters, and celebrates the prospect of growing stronger with age. -

The objective of the draft directive is to offer a way of avoiding the double taxation of profits transferred "artificially" between associated enterprises established in different member states. It is believed that multinational companies in particular have been using this device of disguised and artificial profit transfers in numerous ways (for example, by demanding excessive patent fees). Under present circumstances, a member state's tax au thorities may slap a higher tax on a parent company that has in effect reduced its tax liability by transferring profits to a subsidiary in another state. Yet, tax author ities in the latter state may not necessarily lower their assessment accordingly. The draft proposes that in such a case a special arbitration commission, composed of national tax officials and independent persons, would work out a so lution in order to eliminate double taxation (Common Market Reports, Par. -

European Security, Turkish Foreign Policy and Article 5 of the NATO Treaty
sallux ECPM FOUNDATION European security, Turkish foreign policy and Article 5 of the NATO Treaty JOHANNES DE JONG & CHRISTIAAN MEINEN Do NATO member states have a duty to protect Turkey while Turkey at the same time threatens NATO and European security and stability? This publication clarifies that NATO members can withhold (Article 5) protection without changing the NATO Treaty or expelling Turkey from NATO. European, Canadian and American citizens can be informed that the military of their countries will not protect Turkey and the Erdogan government. The question Source: periodista.gr is if European, Canadian and US politicians have the courage to do so. sallux European security ECPM FOUNDATION 3 Key takeaways from this paper 1. The EU, US, Canada and NATO are struggling with the question of how to deal with Turkey. This publication of- fers an overview of Turkish behaviour since 2013 and a viable way forward in how to counter it. The strategy that this publication suggests is that NATO Member States, backed by their Parliaments or Congress, will state that Turkey can no longer count on protection based on Article 5 of the NATO Treaty until Turkey changes its behaviour. 2. This publication maintains that Turkish external behav- iour since 2013 is based on the ideological agenda of President Erdogan’s AKP government. The domestic oppression of Kurds, opposition, and all forms of free Diyanet minister Ali Erbaş holding a sword, ‘neo-Ottomanism’.
