Beginningin April 1999 we started to publish the PAX index along with the Solo II results. What is PAX? TheProfessional Auto-X Index(PAX Index)is an autocrosshandicapping systemdesigned to allow comparisonbetween the variousSCCA Solo II classes. The PAX nrmbersrepresent times that shouldbe run by cars developedto the limit of the rules and driven by nationalcaliber drivers. The PAX Index is updatedeach year to accountfor rule changesand is basedon major events, including the SCCA Solo II Nationals, where there are plentyof fully preparedcars in the handsof top qualitydrivers.

To usethe Index, multiply a giventime by the classindex number to get an indexedtime. For example,if a CS carnurs a timeof 43.500,its indexedtime is 34.887(43.500 x .802). If on thesame course, an ASP car runs a timeof 41.000,its indexedtime is 34.932(41.000 x .852). In this case, the CS competitorperformed the best.

Coursestyle, pavement type, weatherconditions and a numberof other variablescan influenceautocross competition, including indexing. The Index shouldnot be consideredthe ultimatemeasure, but canbe usedto gaugeperformance and increase event fun.

Thismonth's Volunteer of TheMonth hasbeen a memberofthe SCCAfor "Hal" a couple of years.Halford Tome is one of those people that loves racing in any form. For that reasonwe seehim at just aboutevery event. I first met Hal when he cameout to race his Mustangat Hawaii RacewayPark during one of those informal track daysthat were advertisedat variousspeed shops. Since then he hasbeen a regularat our SoloII events. At times Hal hasraced his Mustangor his backup racer,a Mitsubishipick up truck.

Hal is usuallyone of the first to showup at an event(if he' s not hanging)and helps to set up the track. He is usuallyone of the last to leave.Hal hasbeen with Flaggingand Communica- tion at our wheelto wheelraces and has a secondaryposition as the Grid Marshall.Hal is the seniorengineer with CommunicationConsulting Services, Inc. in downtown Honolulu. They specializein the telecommunicationsfield with design, construction, and consulting.Next time you seeHal ask him aboutsome of the uary thingshe usedto do with his car. He hasa lot of storiesto share.

SCCASOLO II STAYSAT BARBERSPOINT

Solo II hasbeen allowed to stay at the BarbersPoint airfield indefinitely. The City and County has no immediateplans fbr the area and since we were already using the field, they grantedus the useof the area.Since Barbers Point hasnot beenformally transferred to the state,' we havea verbalagreement for theuse ofthe area.Once all the transfershave been completed the Ctty & Countywill draft a formal agreementwith us and the PoliceDept., the model airplane fliersand the otherusers of the airfield. We havealso been given the okay to continueto usethe bombshelter to storeour van andtrailer. The shelteris in anotherarea and comes under Hawaiian Homes.Unfortunately, the statehas to chargeus rent for the use. This is the only bombshelter that has a chain link fenceand barbedwire for protection and it is very convenientfor our use. The rent is nominaland shouldnot impactthe entry fees.
