Las Euforbias Suculentas II CONGRESO NACIONAL DE CACTUS Y SUCULENTAS LAS EUFORBIAS SUCULENTAS José Manuel Sánchez de Lorenzo-Cáceres Ingeniero Técnico Agrícola II CONGRESO NACIONAL DE CACTUS Y SUCULENTAS La familia Euphorbiaceae es la sexta en importancia, pues incluye alrededor de 8.000 especies pertenecientes a 334 géneros, distribuidos en 5 subfamilias y 52 tribus. Aunque existen representantes suculentos en tres de las cinco subfamilias, en esta conferencia sólo nos centraremos en la subfamilia Euphorbioideae, tribu Euphorbieae, subtribu Euphorbiinae, que comprende, además del género Euphorbia, los géneros Pedilanthus, Chamaesyce, Elaeophorbia, Cubanthus, Monadenium, Synadenium y Endadenium. Euphorbia es un género amplio y cosmopolita, con alrededor de 2.000 especies distribuidas por todo el mundo, ausente solamente en las floras del Ártico y del Antártico. Al ser un género tan variopinto y al que pertenecen tantas especies, ha sido subdividido en numerosos subgéneros y en 25 secciones, aunque se está estudiando su simplificación, siendo el subgénero Euphorbia el más numeroso en especies y el que comprende la mayor parte de las euforbias suculentas, muchas de ellas con aspecto cactiforme. II CONGRESO NACIONAL DE CACTUS Y SUCULENTAS Además de su típica inflorescencia, de la que se hablará más adelante, otra característica a resaltar en el caso de muchas de las euforbias suculentas es la ausencia de hojas y la transformación de las estípulas en espinas. En otras ocasiones las espinas tienen su origen en el pedúnculo de la inflorescencia, que es persistente y se endurece. Las euforbias suculentas africanas y muchos de los cactus americanos son un claro ejemplo de lo que se denomina evolución convergente, en la que organismos no emparentados, o de parentesco muy distante, evolucionan de una forma similar como respuesta a condiciones del medio parecidas, como es la aridez, llegando en ocasiones a parecerse de una forma asombrosa. Es por ello que muchas personas ajenas a la botánica confunden unas y otras, englobándolas bajo la denominación genérica de cactus. Un ejemplo de evolución convergente en el mundo animal lo constituyen las alas en insectos, aves o murciélagos. Pl. 1: 450) basándose en Euphorbia antiquorum, se conocían euforbias suculentas desde muchísimos años antes, principalmente por ser plantas con ciertas aplicaciones medicinales. Prueba de ello es la ilustración de lo que con toda seguridad se trata de una Euphorbia resinifera, del noroeste de Marruecos, presente en un manuscrito sobre plantas medicinales que data del año 600 d.C. Este manuscrito, conocido por el nombre Codex Neapolitanus, se conserva actualmente en la Biblioteca Nacional de Nápoles. (Lawant, P. & Winthagen, D. 2001). Codex Neapolitanus II CONGRESO NACIONAL DE CACTUS Y SUCULENTAS Se le atribuye al rey Juba de Mauritania, persona erudita e ilustrada, el descubrimiento de esta planta con propiedades medicinales a la que denominó Euphorbia, en honor a su médico llamado Euphorbus. El látex seco (Euphorbium) se utilizaba en enfermedades agudas y crónicas, tanto de animales como de personas, siendo utilizado aún en la actualidad por algunas tribus. II CONGRESO NACIONAL DE CACTUS Y SUCULENTAS Con el avance de la medicina y debido a la toxicidad de su látex, el empleo de Euphorbia como planta medicinal es cada día menor, relegándose a usos externos. Se dice que la savia de algunas plantas, las cuales crecen curiosamente junto a euforbias, constituye un antídoto de la irritación de su látex. Son ejemplo de ello Kleinia anteuphorbium y Aeonium lindleyi, aunque no sé de nadie que lo haya experimentado. En algunos casos estos pedúnculos se tornan duros y agudos, transformándose en verdaderas espinas. Euphorbia enopla Euphorbia submammillaris Euphorbia aggregata LAS ESPINAS II CONGRESO NACIONAL DE CACTUS Y SUCULENTAS Hay que aclarar los conceptos de espina y aguijón, pues aunque a primera vista podrían parecer lo mismo y coloquialmente se utilizan casi con un mismo significado, botánicamente existen diferencias. Se denomina espina al órgano o parte de un órgano, ya sea axial o apendicular, endurecido y puntiagudo. La espina está lignificada y posee tejido vascular, y está intimamente unida al órgano que la trae. El aguijón (o emergencia), en cambio, tiene un origen superficial, epidérmico y a veces también subepidérmico, y por ello no está unido intimamente al órgano que lo trae.     YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). In order to make this material available to zoologists generally, a series of photographs of the skull of each specimen collected has been added to the paper. This has been found necessary not only to illustrate the text, but in order to fill one of the gaps in the literature pertaining to African mammalogy. Up to the present time no photograph of a perfect skull of this rhinoceros has appeared in print. There have been a few figures published, but none showing structural details well. The present publication will do much to remedy this want, and will also, it is hoped, serve to put the species on a more logical systematic basis. In the present paper considerable emphasis has been placed on the really great structural differences which exist between the white rhi- noceros and the black, with which it has hitherto been generically con- founded under the name Diccros.

Despite this potential, there is limited documentation of the camel forage species, their availability and distribution. The study was conducted in Karamoja sub-region in Uganda and involved assessment of vegetation with intent to characterize the range of forage species available for camels in the region. The camel grazing area was stratified based on land cover types, namely woodland, bushland, grassland and farmland using the Amudat and Moroto district vegetation maps. Vegetation plots measuring 20 m × 20 m were mapped out among the land cover types where species identification was undertaken. In addition, a cross-sectional survey involving 52 camel herders was used to document the camel forage species preferences. Shannon and Simpson diversity indices as well as the Jaccard coefficient were used to measure the species richness, relative abundance, diversity and plant community similarities among the land cover types. Results showed high species richness and diversities in the bushland and woodland land cover types. Plant communities in the woodland and bushlands were found to be more similar. A wide range of plant species were reported to be preferred by camels in the study area, that is 63 in Amudat and 50 in Moroto districts.

Nat. Croat. Vol. 27, No. 2, 407- 420*, 2018, Zagreb. In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. Received 12 July, 2016; Accepted 15 October, 2016 This research was carried out to assess the plant species diversity in Nasarawa State, Nigeria with a view to obtain an accurate database and inventory of the naturally occurring plant species in the state for reference and research purposes. This preliminary report covers a total of nine local government areas in the state. The work involved intensive survey and visits to the sample sites for this exercise. The diversity status of each plant and the distribution across the state were also determined using standard method. A total of number of 244 plant species belonging to 57 plant families were identified out of which the families, Asteraceae, Poaceae, Combretaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Moraceae and Papilionaceae were the most highly distributed across the entire study area. There was great extent of diversity in the distribution of plants across all the areas sampled with the highest in Wamba LGA. The most predominant food crop across the state was Sorgum spp. followed by Sesame indica and then Zea mays.
