    169-187 091893 Lu (D - CMYK) 5/6/08 09:11 Page 169 article The Many Faces of Internationalization in Japanese Anime Amy Shirong Lu Abstract This article explores the internationalization of Japanese anime (animation) in an effort to help explain the cultural politics behind this popular cultural product. The inter- nationalization of anime includes the incorporation of de- Japanized elements into anime’s background, context, character design, and narrative organization. A theoretical framework for understanding anime’s internationalization is developed, proposing that there are at least three kinds of cultural politics working behind anime’s international success: one, de-politicized internationalization, which primarily serves as a commercial tactic to attract international audiences; two, Occidentalized inter- nationalization, which satiates a nationalistic sentiment; three, self-Orientalized internationalization, which reveals a cultural desire to establish Japan as an ersatz Western country in Asia. Keywords anime, cultural politics, de-Japanization , internationalization, Japanese animation, Occidentalism, Orientalism, self-Orientalization Anime, another name for Japanese animation,1 emerged in the 1910s (Fan, 2001: 115)2 and developed its current distinctive form in the 1960s (Mangels and Hamill, 2003: xvii).3 A fascinating characteristic of anime is that it usually does not seem Japanese. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2001 THE ATOMIC BOMB: REFLECTIONS IN JAPANESE MANGA AND ANIME Committee Chair: Robert B. DeJanes, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines post-World War II “anime” and manga based on the bomb’s after-effects and changes in Japanese mindsets resulting from the War, especially as inspired by Osamu Tezuka and later artists influenced by his works. This study theorized that Japanese political culture elements, through particular plotlines, could be traced in manga and anime themes carrying hidden messages repeatedly referencing the bomb’s effects on Japan, citing Tezuka’s influence, in the 1945-65 and 1985-95 periods, in the post-apocalyptic, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Case studies were used to qualitatively assess data for historical evidence of Tezuka’s influence across specific genres, from scholarly studies and reviews of manga. comics, and related media. Evidence ofTezuka-inspired themes, such as hope out of endless devastation (the phoenix analogy) and man’s destructive obsession with technology by conquering nature (dependent variables), were analyzed from a comparativist, historical viewpoint, as influenced by atomic bomb-related themes. The researcher explains the Japanese fascination with technology and why many anime show status quo disagreements. Japan absorbed trauma from the bomb, was invaded by foreigners, and faced a complete overhaul. Post-war, the economy grew rapidly, but Japan must reduce rigidity and social conformity. The Japanese are aware of the US role in their dual defense arrangement; Japan felt discomfort as a junior-partner in the 1950s-60s.

    OTHERNESS AND IDENTITY IN SHONEN MANGA ALEX JAMES LEWINGTON DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF YORK SOCIOLOGY AUGUST 2020 ABSTRACT This thesis explored how Otherness was identified and interpreted by adult readers within the United Kingdom, through their engagement with shonen manga. Using semi-structured interviews of 40 participants, 21 males and 19 females, this study investigated how UK manga readers contemplated Otherness, when the concept was broken down into overarching themes of exclusion, dehumanization and Othered identity. This study examined how questions of Otherness led readers to consider manga in relation to their identities. The findings indicate UK readers consider Otherness in relation to struggles of identity recognition and value. The Other is interpellated by UK manga readers as either a threat to power hierarchies between the Self and the Other, or a means for the Self to reinforce such hierarchies. The findings further suggest that UK manga readers commonly consider themselves to be the Other by way of social rejection, devaluation and systematic disregard; they often perceive themselves as underdogs; their identification of Otherness themes and their propensity to identify with Othered characters largely depends on their lived experiences of Otherness. Furthermore, UK manga readers widely report manga to be an inspirational medium, the reading of which is empowering, boosts self-esteem, encourages readers to embrace Otherness, to resist conformity to social norms, and inspires a never-give-up attitude in their pursuit of recognition. Lastly, their engagement with manga beyond the textual level provides UK manga readers with a sense of belonging within a community of other Others.

    Manga Bibliography Unlike Western Graphic Novels which generally follow the narrative tradition found in written literature, Manga stories are written because the authors (or Manga-ka) have a targeted audience they would like to reach and some stock characters they would like to present. In Manga, the characters are created first for a specific audience. Those characters are then used to tell stories which (the Manga-ka hopes) are of interest to the targeted audience. Therefore, a good way to divide the broad world of Manga into manageable genres is to first determine the audience type, then establish the theme of the stories or the special characteristics of the protagonists. Because of this focus on the intended audience, the most common launching platform for manga stories is in periodicals intended for specific audiences. The bibliography which follows will highlight some of the leading magazines aimed at each type of audience as well as give examples of some of the more popular stories which have gained enough of a following to take on a life of their own and be published as stand-alone (often serialized) works called “tankobon”.
