Ryan, S.J. Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society Let me begin on holy ground, Ireland. In 1931 William Butler Yeats concluded his short poem, “Remorse for Intemperate Speech,” with a stanza that speaks to me as the person I am, for better or for worse: Out of Ireland have we come. Great hatred, little room, Maimed us at the start. I carry from my mother’s womb A fanatic heart. Ireland is, indeed, a small place, and it has seen great fanaticism and hatred, although the temperature of Ireland as a whole has subsided dramatically since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, despite Boris Johnson. The whole island of Ireland today occupies 32,599 square miles. British-administered Northern Ireland includes 5,340 of those square miles. Combined Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland approximate the size of Indiana. The total population of the island of Ireland is 6.7 million people, about a half a million more than the population of Indiana. There is another place of “great hatred, little room” that I wish to discuss this evening: the Holy Land, made up today of the State of Israel and the Palestinian autonomous regions of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. -

Chapter 4 St Francis and the Holy Land in the Fifteenth Century From around the turn of the sixteenth century onwards, when the Francis- cans had been established in the Holy Land for almost two hundred years, they began to articulate increasingly sophisticated ideas about their own role within this region. Not only did the (by this time) Observant friars come to view receiving and conducting all Western European pilgrims as their preroga- tive, as was discussed in the previous chapter, but they also began to claim the Holy Land as an essentially Observant Franciscan territory (see chapter five). In order to substantiate this claim to the Holy Land, the friars looked to the past. By constructing their own particular narrative of the history of the Holy Land, they were able to create a cultural memory to support their identity as divinely appointed keepers and possessors of (or even heirs to) the Holy Land. By studying and reinterpreting the past they aimed to give substance to their ideological relationship with the Holy Land. This chapter examines the first, late fifteenth-century, example of a text by an Observant Franciscan that analyses the past in order to point out the present significance of the custodia Terrae Sanctae: book vii of friar Paul Wal- ther von Guglingen’s Treatise on the Holy Land. Book vii is firmly grounded in the then existing tradition at the Franciscan convent in Jerusalem of com- piling manuscripts with historical texts relating to the Holy Land. Nonethe- less, Guglingen’s text is also innovative. It synthesizes a new and coherent history of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, based on the sources present in the convent library in Jerusalem, something that had not previously been at- tempted by a friar of the Franciscan custody of the Holy Land. -

CUSTODY OF THE HOLY LAND Order of Friars Minor Report Summary 2010/2011 The Custody of the Holy Land tirelessly continues its mission, begun several centuries ago, to conserve and protect the holy places in the Land of Jesus. This includes celebrating the liturgy, assisting Pilgrims, and carrying out multiple apostolic works, especially for the benefit of the Christian communities. In the year 2010/2011, particular attention has been paid to the planning and execution of projects in the following areas: HOLY PLACES I) PILGRIMS 1. Bethlehem • Parish Church of St. Catherine ¾ Completion of work on the lighting system inside the Church of St. Catherine. 2. Jerusalem • Convent of St. Saviour ¾ Renovation of the “Studio Teologico” and restoration of the Convent of St. Saviour. ¾ Work started on the Custodial Library. ¾ Magnificat – School of Music: renovation of bathrooms and entrance stairway. ¾ Renovation of bathrooms in the Sisters’ Convent. • Sanctuary of Dominus Flevit ¾ Completion of restructuring at the Convent of Dominus Flevit, including the sanctuary, gardens and areas reserved for the reception of pilgrims. • Gethsemane ¾ Initial procurement needed for reconstruction of the exterior stone wall, supplies for and installation of steel fence, as required by the Environmental Authorities of Israel. ¾ Beginning restoration and maintenance of the roof of the Basilica of Gethsemane, in order to prevent water seepage. • Sanctuary of the Flagellation Studium Biblicum Francescanum 1 ¾ Concluding restoration of the “Hall of Crusaders” at the Convent of the Flagellation. ¾ Completing the Library expansion of the Studium Biblicum Francescanum. The project includes the installation of an elevator for greater accessibility to the premises, as well as renovation of mobile and fixed shelving. -

N. 180312d Monday 12.03.2018 Appeal for the Collection for Christians in the Holy Land Letter of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches The “pro Terra Sancta” Collection Summary Report of the Custody of the Holy Land on projects and works enabled by the Collection 2016/2017 14 February 2018 Ash Wednesday Your Excellency, The Lenten Season, which we are living once again, invites us to go to Jerusalem through the way of the Cross upon which the Son of God accomplished his redemptive mission. On this pilgrimage the Holy Spirit who reveals to us the meaning of the Word of God accompanies us. Besides the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we are strengthened by prayer and almsgiving. It is the right time to get closer to Christ by recognizing our poverty and our sins and live the same emptiness and humility of the Son of God who "he became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich" (2 Cor. 8,9). It is also an exceptional time to reach out to the others through the works of charity. Knowing that the Lenten journey is not a solitary act, but an itinerary of solidarity by which each one of us is called to pause and like the Good Samaritan accompany our brethren who for many reasons find it difficult to stand up and continue their journey. Also this year, the traditional "Collection for the Holy Land" held on Good Friday, is a proper occasion for the faithful to be one with our brethren in the Holy Land and the Middle East. -

Franciscans mark 600th year of pope establishing Commissaries of Holy Land WASHINGTON (CNS)(UPDATED) — Before he became guardian and commissary of the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington in 2013, Franciscan Father Larry Dunham made his first trip to the Holy Land, where his order has cared for the most sacred shrines of Christendom for centuries. The trip brought out the first fervor he felt when he became a priest, he told Catholic News Service Feb. 11. The Franciscans are the custodians of “the patrimony of our Church” and it was “deeply moving” to see firsthand “how incredible this work is,” said the 73-year-old friar. “Where Jesus was born, where Jesus walked, lived, did his ministry, suffered and died — this is the center of our faith and grounds us in our faith, the very foundations of our faith,” he added. Thinking about the people in the Holy Land as descendants of the first ones to have heard the word of God preached to them on the first Pentecost “gives me goose bumps,” he added. The work of the friars also “gives these people hope,” he said. The friars have never left them — despite violent clashes and political unrest that have plagued the region for time immemorial — and they continue to pour their lives out for them” with many good works. As one of the three monotheistic religions that call the Holy Land home, the Franciscans are also bridge-builders in a land of conflict. Each year, Easter is scheduled for the first Sunday following the “Paschal Full Moon” and can occur between March 22nd and April 25th. In ancient times, before calendars were commonplace, most people did not know the dates for the feasts of the new liturgical year. On Epiphany Sunday, the dates were “proclaimed” during the celebration of Holy Mass. After the proclamation of the Gospel, a cantor, deacon, or lector, in keeping with the ancient practices of the Church, may announce from the ambo the moveable feasts of the new year. Dear Brothers and Sisters, know that as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God’s mercy, we announce to you now the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. -

religions Article Experiencing La Verna at Home: Italian Sixteenth-Century Maiolica Sanctuaries and Chapels Zuzanna Sarnecka The Institute of Art History, University of Warsaw, 00-927 Warszawa, Poland; [email protected] Received: 30 September 2019; Accepted: 17 December 2019; Published: 20 December 2019 Abstract: The present study describes the function of small-scale maiolica sanctuaries and chapels created in Italy in the sixteenth century. The so-called eremi encouraged a multisensory engagement of the faithful with complex structures that included receptacles for holy water, openings for the burning of incense, and moveable parts. They depicted a saint contemplating a crucifix or a book in a landscape and, as such, they provided a model for everyday pious life. Although they were less lifelike than the full-size recreations of holy sites, such as the Sacro Monte in Varallo, they had the significant advantage of allowing more spontaneous handling. The reduced scale made the objects portable and stimulated a more immediate pious experience. It seems likely that they formed part of an intimate and private setting. The focused attention given here to works by mostly anonymous artists reveals new categories of analysis, such as their religious efficacy. This allows discussion of these neglected artworks from a more positive perspective, in which their spiritual significance, technical accomplishment and functionality come to the fore. Built in the southern part of Mount Penna at 1128 meters above sea level, the Sanctuary Above the cliff shrouded by forest is the largest sanctuary complex in its massive and varied architecture holds many treasures of spirituality, art, culture and history. For all Franciscans and supporters of San Francesco La Verna is an indispensable place of pilgrimage. For them, the friars of Verna centuries damage, as well as spiritual assistance, the opportunity to refresh and stop for a few days in the guest. HERMITAGE CELLS SAINT FRANCIS is a sacred building that is located in Le Celle, in the town of Cortona, in the province of Arezzo. The Franciscan settlement was founded in 1211 by the saint himself, who returned there in 1226 before he died, and was extensively restored in 1969 The complex, built at the turn of a narrow valley, is very impressive for the amenity and spirituality of the place. The dwellings of the monks and the local convent are arranged "tiers" on both sides of the valley. Finding himself to preach at Cortona in 1211, as usual, Francis asked for and obtained a place in which they can withdraw in prayer. -

This year, due to the closure of churches around the world during Holy Week because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Pope Francis moved the date for this collection to Sunday September 13th to coincide with the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on September 14th. This collection promotes the missionary work of the Church in the Holy Land by providing welfare assistance to local Christians in areas such as health, education, employment and housing. Parishes, schools, orphanages and medical centres throughout the Holy Land also rely on assistance from this collection. It is also used to maintain over 70 churches and shrines associated with the life of Jesus. Last year, Australian Catholics donated $1.3 million to this cause, despite tough economic times, rural droughts and the increasing cost of living. This year, we are again facing great challenges due to COVID-19, but your generosity would again be greatly appreciated. Press release – March 8, 2016 DISCOVERING THE VIA DOLOROSA, THE WAY OF THE CROSS IN JERUSALEM On 17th March 2016, at the Monastery of the Flagellation in Jerusalem, the Custody of the Holy Land (the Franciscan Order of the province of the Holy Land) will open the first section of the new Terra Sancta Museum: the Via Dolorosa, the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem. The project is unique and innovative for the Holy City. It has been in construction for several years now and will be completed in 2018 with two other sections, an historical and an archaeological one. The Terra Sancta Museum – Via Dolorosa is a multimedia installation which combines three different dimensions: historical / archaeological, emotional and spiritual. A journey back in time through the history of Jerusalem, from Jesus’ times to our days, in media-enhanced scenography. It will be a very powerful tool for experiencing, with greater understanding, the places along the Way of the Cross and the Holy Sepulchre, which many find difficult to comprehend today, and the urban evolution of the Holy City. The Via Dolorosa is also proposed as an important moment of spirituality in preparation for the Way of the Cross itself. After the multimedia experience pilgrims may then start their Way of the Cross with a greater spirit, as a continuation of what they have just experienced.
