PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 and 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak a Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate
PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Ne, já vám nechci vyprávět o Billy Gibbonsovi, Franku Beardovi a Dusty Hillovi z hlediska historie, zvolím spíše osobní pohled. -

By all accounts, it was his pre-ZZ Top engagement's first public performance on a Houston stage since the LBJ administration, not to mention a glimpse of an alternate timeline any Bayou City music-history buff would find irresistible. The occasion was the Deacons of Deadwood's 12th annual charity gala, a fundraiser thrown by the large Houston motorcycle club/nonprofit whose annual donations to Houston-area children's charities number in the six figures. According to current Deacons president Steve Lamb, the Sidewalks got involved because "some friends of the band contacted us." He went on to tell me his non-Deacon position is an assets manager for Morgan Stanley, both Jimi Hendrix's and Sharon Stone's sisters were at the gala, and that http://www.houstonpress.com/music/themovingsidewalksatbayoumusiccenter92820136497257 1/8 1/30/2017 The Moving Sidewalks at Bayou Music Center, 9/28/2013 | Houston Press the Deacons have raised some $1.4 million for some very fortunate local kids in the club's 11-year history. -

LOOKING BACK in HISTORY Happenings in the Cookeville Area As Recorded in the Pages of the Herald Citizen Newspaper, Cookeville, TN
WAY BACK WHEN: LOOKING BACK IN HISTORY Happenings in the Cookeville area as recorded in the pages of the Herald Citizen Newspaper, Cookeville, TN. By Bob McMillian 1950’s (Compiled by Audrey J. Lambert) http://www.ajlambert.com 1950 (January 5, 1950) “Music lovers of this Upper Cumberland area” have got something exciting to look forward to next week when a young piano team — Vera Apple and Michael Field — plays at Tennessee Tech. They are “two wizards of the keyboards who play and think as one,” according to a recent review in the New York World Telegram. They studied together at Julliard, went their own ways, and then met by chance and formed a piano duo. Their concert is the subject of a major page•one story this week here. In other entertainment news, the Central High School Cavaliers will meet Crossville in a basketball game set to be played in the school’s new gymnasium (now Cookeville Junior High). The new gym was part of a $217,000 renovation and expansion of the school. It is larger than the old one and boasts fold•up bleachers. (January 12, 1950) An advertisement for Citizens Bank reads: “There’s a tribe in South Africa that requires a prospective bridegroom to milk a lioness as proof of his bravery. You needn’t be brave to open an account with us. Our friendly staff makes even widows and orphans feel at ease.” (January 19, 1950) Cookeville’s Postmaster F. P. Moore says he’s seen a lot of changes in postal service here since he became postmaster in 1939. -

1 2 3 As the state’s largest industrial city, Houston was a destination for many musicians looking for employment during the early 1900s Blues musicians migrated from the Mississippi Delta, especially during the Great Depression, and Texas blues was born. During this time, notable western swing musicians from the Fort Worth area also migrated to Houston in search of better economy. Along with Houston and Beaumont‐area musicians, they created a flourishing swing scene that evolved into a thriving dance hall and honky tonk scene. Looking for work, black Creoles from Louisiana moved to large, industrial east Texas cities such as Houston. Houston’s Frenchtown was important to the development of zydeco, which formed out of the mixing of Louisiana’s acoustic La La music with 4 urban blues and R&B. Tejano music was influenced by border music, and along with conjunto music, also had its roots in the early twentieth century and became a part of the fiber of Houston Music. 4 With ACA and Goldstar/SugarHill recording studios and labels Starday, Duke and Peacock, and D Records, Houston has long been a center for recording in the region. This image is from an ACA Master Book from early fifties. Hopefully, you can make out Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton’s name in the middle of the page. Although Thornton was born in Alabama, her career took off when she moved to Houston and began recording for Don Robey’s labels Peacock and Duke. Recorded at ACA in 1952, Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog” spent several weeks at the number 1 positions on the Billboard charts in 1953. -
