It turned out to be some dreadful American music apparently performed at something called the 'Grand Ole Opry' in Nashville, Tennessee. This woman sang a totally inappropriate song entitled 'Blanket On The Ground', one line of which went: 'Just because we are married doesn't mean we can't sleep around'! I ask you, this may be normal behaviour for hillbillies who marry their 13-year old cousins, but it is totally unacceptable here. A gentleman in the next row leaned over and tried to make out the words 'slip around', but of course that is absolute nonsense. Unless they were laying the blanket on icy ground why should they be slipping around? Then some awful man in a cowboy hat sang about his girlfriend coming out of a honkytonk. Why on Earth a woman would climb into an old upright pianoforte I have no idea; presumably this is where poor hillbillies live when their ramshackle huts fall down.

I served the final 15months of my compulsory period of National Service at this, the last of my six postings. On demob, I stayed in the area and have been here ever since. I have kept in contact with four of my former colleagues. Photos and memories come out for an airing every so often, but it is only in the last few years, however, that I have started to think seriously about the history of RAF Truleigh Hill. The radar operation started in 1940, just before The Battle of Britain, and continued in several different formats until closure in 1958.

The one and only record? Well, all right then, by no means, but informed by my ambition to set down my record of the interweaving of the events of those tumultuous years and the impact of the music made in parallel to them, as I lived through the decade then and as I recall it now. Make no mistake, then: this is unashamedly a highly selective rather than a comprehensive account, dictated wholly by my own personal tastes and interests as they were shaped and developed by the consecutive twists and turns of the era.

Now if the advert above does not press all the right buttons, I guess you’re reading the wrong publication, subscribing to the wrong organization. This promises to be one hell of a show, another landmark in the making, I can feel it in my gut folks. I have spoken to all artists over these last few weeks at the time of typing, and they are really up for it, I mean really raring to go. As you can see we are returning to the 100 Club after a break of a few years. Unfortunately we have decided to leave the Borderline, as I truly feel the ambience of the refurbished venue is unsuitable for our type of show. I must point out before any cries of disloyalty towards the 100 Club for leaving that venue for the Borderline, it was purely that at the time the veteran Oxford Street establishment was under threat. It was suggested by the management that we move our event to a temporary home whilst the problems were in the process of being sorted out.

  • Besucherschwund!

For Linda, Evie, Mollie and Michael – always. Author’s Note While I have been fortunate over the years to have enjoyed the company of various ex-members and/or former employees of Led Zeppelin, it should be born in mind at all times that this is an unauthorised biography, written objectively and with no undue pressure from any outside influence to do anything other than tell the story as I honestly see it. It should also be clearly understood that the italicised ‘flashback’ passages of the text are not the actual words of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Peter Grant, nor are they actual quotes. Whilst they are all based on thorough biographical research, the facts of which can be found in the Notes & Sources section at the end of this book, the words themselves are the product of my imagination. • (New Releases) Exceeded Those Made with Cliff, 23 Tracks As Against 11
1962 This year, for the first time, The Shadows’ own recordings (new releases) exceeded those made with Cliff, 23 tracks as against 11. Still, their more limited involvement with him brought dividends: two Singles at No.1, taking in two classics, ‘The Young Ones’ and ‘Bachelor Boy’, and two at No.2; an Album at No.3; of the various EPs one made No.1, another No.4. Once again, the stream of group compositions did not even begin to run dry: all four contributed to numbers for themselves and/ or for Cliff, the high point here being the superb material for The Boys EP. Now, in fact, The Shadows truly came into their own, by notching up a remarkable four Number Ones in the face of stiff opposition throughout: [47] WONDERFUL LAND, with [69] DANCE ON! following on closely, hitting the top early in 1963 ([49] GUITAR TANGO stalled at No.4); two EPs of five going the rounds: Spotlight On The Shadows (compilation) and The Boys (fresh material); and a second Album, Out Of The Shadows . The Shadows were arguably unlucky with [49] GUITAR TANGO, released in July: it was challenged, and beaten, by a number of big-name vocalists, Frank Ifield, Pat Boone, Ray Charles and Bobby Darin. The other two releases fared better. Their most successful Single ever, and an essential ingredient of live performances, [47] WONDERFUL LAND thrust aside Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’/ ‘Rock-A-Hula Baby’, and enjoyed an eight-week stay at No.1, before being dethroned by B Bumble & The Stingers’ ‘Nut Rocker’.
