On Jan. 24 in , Isabel Hernandez, leader of the National Repatriation Committee (CNR), told reporters that more than 500 Salvadoran refugees are expected to return home from Nicaragua and Panama within the next few days, "despite the government's failure to authorize their repatriation." A total of 80 families (about 285 persons) will likely arrive next week, said Hernandez, from the Omar Torrijos agricultural cooperative, located in Leon department, Nicaragua. The repatriation of this group of refugees, she added, had been scheduled for Dec. 20, but was postponed result of "the government's intransigence." Hernandez stated that the group is to be relocated in their communities of origin, or northern San Salvador. Despite assistance provided by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Nicaraguan government, the refugees' survival has been threatened. Former Nicaraguan contras, she said, have stolen the "few belongings" the refugees possessed. Next, Hernandez reported that the remaining 381 refugees from Ciudad Romero in Panama (see article this issue) are expected to arrive in on Jan. 25-26. (Basic data from ACAN-EFE, 01/24/91)
