AUERBACH POLLOCK FRIEDLANDER
COMPLETES WORK ON
ON THE DAI SHOW THEATRE
(SAN FRANCISCO, NEW YORK, MINNEAPOLIS) – The Dai Show Theatre marks a new era of entertainment in the Yunnan Province. Located at the Xishuangbanna International Resort in China, housing a water acrobatics show, the theatre is a highly sophisticated venue that sets a new level of artistic and technical achievement to excite audiences from all over the world. The Xishuangbanna International Resort was developed by Wanda Group. The theatre is part of a larger Wanda Group resort development covering 16-square-kilometers. When completed, the development will have seven divisions - the theatre, a theme amusement park, a tropical adventure park, upscale hotels, a commercial center, a 3A-rated hospital and a new tourism town.
Auerbach Pollock Friedlander, Performing Arts/Media Facilities Planning and Design, completed work on the 1,183-seat Dai Show Theatre in collaboration with production designers and entertainment architects Stufish, who also designed the building, and show producer Franco Dragone. Auerbach Pollock Friedlander’s services encompassed site studies, programming, planning, theatre and technical design services, beginning in the earliest stages of the project to its completion.
“The success of this project is the result of a huge team effort,” said Len Auerbach, Chairman and Director of Design for Auerbach Pollock Friedlander. “The theatre is highly complex and utilizes cutting-edge technology. The show has spectacular aquatic and special effects all choreographed with 3D flying of acrobatic performers. Our design colleagues with Wanda Group and the theatrical contractors pushed the boundaries of expertise to help us realize the vision for this unique space. Everyone involved was sensitive to both the budget and aggressive schedule and worked together toward a common goal of successfully opening the theatre.”
The concept for the water show is in recognition of the area’s famous Dai Water Splashing Festival which is celebrated by the Dai people annually in April over three days and coincides with the start of their New Year. Audience members can also expect cultural and festival references in the scenic design and performance. The set design also incorporates tropical elements - a nod to the region’s landscape.

Auerbach Pollock Friedlander’s scope of work included an earlier site study with Stufish Entertainment Architects, for a venue situated in the center of a lake. Ultimately, the venue was moved to land already within the existing development. The new Dai Theatre’s roof is meant to resemble the structure of a palm frond common to the region. The theatre itself features a large performance water basin around which the audience is seated. The stage areas can easily transition between wet and dry as well as to reveal a deep dive pool. Working with aquatics consultant STO, Auerbach Pollock Friedlander designed all the water effects including jumping jets, an indoor rain shower and the physical appearance of an infinity pool edge adjacent to the dive pool basin. The theatre’s large center dive basin plug, measuring 8 meters in diameter, can raise and lower the water level 5.5 meters. The perimeter basin – 333,661 gallons of water – can be drained in approximately 20 seconds and refilled in 45 seconds. The large central basin is 5 meters deep allowing performers to dive dramatically from 15 meters above the water, into the pool throughout the performance.
Also, a proprietary computer-controlled, video projection system adds to the excitement of the performance. The video imaging follows performers throughout the venue using several movable tracking video projectors, while projecting and overlaying images on multiple surfaces and re-projecting live images from the show onto surrounding surfaces. Advanced audio systems also allow complex mixing and routing of live sound and sound effects throughout the auditorium. Auerbach Pollock Friedlander also provided audio-video consulting services for the project.
With so many complex systems to design and install, the entire team successfully coordinated their efforts to test and commission each system.
“During the commissioning phase, we had nine people on-site just from Auerbach Pollock Friedlander, STO, and our interpreters, all working with a team from Dragone and Wanda Group to ensure that all systems functioned as anticipated,” explained Tom Neville, principal- in-charge of the project.
Xishuangbanna is a popular tourist destination in Yunnan Province noted for its spectacular tropical environment. The Dai Show Theatre, opening September 25, elevates the level of entertainment in the region with an unrivaled venue and performance.
