Old monumental palace in Centro Havana

VIEW FROM THE GRAND HOTEL, MACKINAC ISLAND Dear Fellow Explorer: Thank you for your interest in Victory Cruise Lines. There are many choices when it comes to cruising and we are proud to have been told by many of our Travel Agents and passengers that we have the best cruises on The Great Lakes.

Want some choices? Our M/V Victory I & II offer more ports to choose from than any other Great Lakes coastal cruising experience.

PANORAMIC THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO

This natural bay is defined by the Sibley Peninsula, also known as the Sleeping Giant, for its majestic mesas rising from Lake Superior. The area came to prominence in 1803 with the establishment of Fort William. Fur trading gave way to copper mining, and eventually the region became a critical transport link to the West. Interestingly, the City of Thunder Bay wasn’t formed until 1970, when Fort William and Port Arthur laid aside years of rivalry to become one larger city comprising the delta of the Kaministiquia River, and its environs.

HISTORICAL NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

Founded in 1639, Newport’s rich and diverse history includes pirates, Quakers, Jewish settlers fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, a French garrison of 4500 soldiers, and it’s infamous first colonial governor, Benedict Arnold. After much of Newport’s shipping trade moved North to New York, the Gilded age brought streets lined with “cottages,” which were actually spectacular mansions built by wealthy plantation owners from the South, and well-heeled Yankees from the North. Homes, like the Vanderbilt’s Marble House, hosted lavish parties during the summer social season.

THE MAJESTIC SHORES OF LAKE SUPERIOR

The largest freshwater lake in the world (by area) offers some of the most impressive coastlines you’ll see on the Great Lakes. On the north side of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, between Sault Saint Marie and Marquette, you’ll find Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which features unique sandstone formations. Miners Castle and Chapel Rock make up the park’s headlands, and the impressive birch forest meets a long stretch of sandy shoreline along Twelvemile Beach, just south of the Au Sable Point lighthouse. You’ll want to have your camera ready as you traverse this great inland sea.

Itinerary Highlight Montreal Notre-Dame Basilica Notre-Dame Basilica is a significant part of the Catholic religious heritage of Montreal. Visitors interested in the arts of the past will be amazed with the church’s impressive crypt, where they can study its origins. The present-day Basilica, which was inaugurated in 1829, was built on a plan set back slightly from the placement of the original church, which stood on the plot of ground covered today by Notre-Dame Street. As a result, many archaeological treasures of major ethnographic value still exist in the area around the Basilica and underneath its front square.
