Authors in several AGU journals are asked to help support publication through payment of author fees. Publication fees vary by journal and were designed to keep institutional subscriptions affordable for these journals. Excess page fees are in addition to the standard journal fee. AGU encourages research publications that are thorough but also concisely presented. This benefits readers as well as reviewers, who are increasingly taxed. Editorial and production costs also scale with length. All AGU journals prefer papers of a reasonable length, but longer papers beyond these guidelines are allowed. The excess length fees recognize this incentive. Funder and Institutional Discounts for Open Access: Many institutions cover completely or offer discounts off of open- access author publishing charges (APC) in AGU journals through accounts with our publishing partner Wiley. Some may apply to any author; others to just the corresponding author of the paper. Please check here to find out if your institution has an account. Requests for waivers are welcome and considered by AGU and the editors. Please explain your request in an email to the journal here or in your cover letter. Please note that GRL rarely accepts papers over 12 publication units and authors are expected to stay within this limit. GRL Frontier articles incur excess fees at 19 PU. Excess fees are charged by all journals, including those for which authors pay an open access APC. Earth and Space Science, Earth’s Future, and JAMES are open access journals. Publication units (PU): Total publishing units = # of words/500 + # of figures + # of tables Word count includes abstract, text, and figure captions only. Word count excludes titles, author lists and affiliations, tables, and references. Tables larger than one page should be Excel or .csv files in supporting information. .
